[more ▼] 2020 was a challenging year for everyone that will stay in our memory. The pandemic disrupted our economies, societies, and all our best laid-out plans. However, COVID-19 also taught us several lessons for the future, in particular the (real) necessity to adapt, to be nimble and to expect the unexpected while supporting cutting-edge excellence in science with the best performing and most flexible tools to unleash research potential. One thing is certain - the strategic developments for accelerated digitalisation and the role that HPC will play to ensure a smarter and more connected University will be in focus in 2021 and the years to come. 2020 was thus a very fruitful and productive year for the ULHPC team which has seen unprecedented changes and challenges. [more ▼] We report the synthesis and structural characterisation of the molecular framework copper(I) hexacyanocobaltate(III), Cu3[Co(CN)6], which we find to be isostructural to H3[Co(CN)6] and the colossal negative thermal expansion material Ag3[Co(CN)6]. Using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction measurements, we find strong positive and negative thermal expansion behaviour respectively perpendicular and parallel to the trigonal crystal axis: α = 25.4(5) MK a −1 and α = − 43.5(8) MK c −1. These opposing effects collectively result in a volume expansivity α = 7.4(11) MK V −1 that is remarkably small for an anisotropic molecular framework. This thermal response is discussed in the context of the behaviour of the analogous H- and Ag-containing systems. We make use of density-functional theory with many-body dispersion interactions (DFT + MBD) to demonstrate that Cu+…Cu+ metallophilic (‘cuprophilic’) interactions are significantly weaker in Cu3[Co(CN)6] than Ag+…Ag+ interactions in Ag3[Co(CN)6], but that this lowering of energy scale counterintuitively translates to a more moderate—rather than enhanced—degree of structural flexibility. The same conclusion is drawn from consideration of a simple GULP model, which we also present here. Our results demonstrate that strong interactions can actually be exploited in the design of ultra-responsive materials if those interactions are set up to act in tension. [more ▼] Based on Brown’s static equations of micromagnetics, the uniaxial polarization of the scattered neutron beam of a bulk magnetic material is computed. The approach considers a Hamiltonian that takes into account the isotropic exchange interaction, the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction, magnetic anisotropy, the dipole–dipole interaction, as well as the effect of an applied magnetic field. In the high-field limit, the solutions for the magnetization Fourier components are used to obtain closed-form results for the spinpolarized SANS (small-angle neutron scattering) cross sections and the ensuing polarization. The theoretical expressions are compared with experimental data on a soft magnetic nanocrystalline alloy. The micromagnetic SANS theory provides a general framework for polarized real-space neutron methods, and it may open up a new avenue for magnetic neutron data analysis on magnetic microstructures. [more ▼] P-bodies belong to a large family of RNA granules that are associated with post-transcriptional gene regulation, conserved from yeast to mammals, and influence biological processes ranging from germ cell development to neuronal plasticity. RNA granules can also transport RNAs to specific locations. Germ granules transport maternal RNAs to the embryo, and neuronal granules transport RNAs long distances to the synaptic dendrites. Here we combine microfluidic-based fluorescent microscopy of single cells and automated image analysis to follow p-body dynamics during cell division in yeast. Our results demonstrate that these highly dynamic granules undergo a unidirectional transport from the mother to the daughter cell during mitosis as well as a constrained "hovering" near the bud site half an hour before the bud is observable. Both behaviors are dependent on the Myo4p/She2p RNA transport machinery. Furthermore, single cell analysis of cell size suggests that PBs play an important role in daughter cell growth under nutrient limiting conditions. [more ▼] A common approach to genome annotation involves the use of homology-based tools for the prediction of the functional role of proteins. The quality of functional annotations is dependent on the reference data used, as such, choosing the appropriate sources is crucial. Unfortunately, no single reference data source can be universally considered the gold standard, thus using multiple references could potentially increase annotation quality and coverage. However, this comes with challenges, particularly due to the introduction of redundant and exclusive annotations. Through text mining it is possible to identify highly similar functional descriptions, thus strengthening the confidence of the final protein functional annotation and providing a redundancy-free output. Here we present UniFunc, a text mining approach that is able to detect similar functional descriptions with high precision. UniFunc was built as a small module and can be independently used or integrated into protein function annotation pipelines. By removing the need to individually analyse and compare annotation results, UniFunc streamlines the complementary use of multiple reference datasets. [more ▼] N-layer transition metal dichalcogenides provide a unique platform to investigate the evolution of the physical properties between the bulk (three-dimensional) and monolayer (quasi-two-dimensional) limits. Here, using high-resolution micro-Raman spectroscopy, we report a unified experimental description of the Γ-point optical phonons in N-layer 2H-molybdenum ditelluride (MoTe2). We observe series of N-dependent low-frequency interlayer shear and breathing modes (below 40 cm–1, denoted LSM and LBM) and well-defined Davydov splittings of the mid-frequency modes (in the range 100–200 cm–1, denoted iX and oX), which solely involve displacements of the chalcogen atoms. In contrast, the high-frequency modes (in the range 200–300 cm–1, denoted iMX and oMX), arising from displacements of both the metal and chalcogen atoms, exhibit considerably reduced splittings. The manifold of phonon modes associated with the in-plane and out-of-plane displacements are quantitatively described by a force constant model, including interactions up to the second nearest neighbor and surface effects as fitting parameters. The splittings for the iX and oX modes observed in N-layer crystals are directly correlated to the corresponding bulk Davydov splittings between the E2u/E1g and B1u/A1g modes, respectively, and provide a measurement of the frequencies of the bulk silent E2u and B1u optical phonon modes. Our analysis could readily be generalized to other layered crystals [less ▲] Detailed reference viewed: 219 (12 UL)![]() Besseron, Xavier ![]() ![]() ![]() in Proceedings of the Third International Conference on Parallel, Distributed, Grid and Cloud Computing for Engineering (2013) This paper presents the enhanced design of the Discrete Particle Method (DPM), a simulation tool which provides high quality and fast simulations to solve a broad range industrial processes involving ... [more ▼] This paper presents the enhanced design of the Discrete Particle Method (DPM), a simulation tool which provides high quality and fast simulations to solve a broad range industrial processes involving granular materials. It enables to resolve mechanical and thermodynamics problems through different simulation modules (motions, chemical conversion). This new design allows to transparently couple the simulation modules in parallel execution. It relies on a unified interface and timebase of the simulation modules and a flexible decomposition in cells of the simulation space. Experimental results study the behavior of the Orthogonal Recursive Bisection (ORB) partitioning algorithm. A good scalability is achieved as the parallel execution on a distributed platform provides a 17-times speedup using 64 processes. [more ▼] We present a combination of techniques to improve the convergence and conditioning properties of partition of unity (PU) enriched finite element methods. By applying these techniques to different types of enrichment functions, namely polynomial, discontinuous and singular, higher order convergence rates can be obtained while keeping condition number growth rates similar to the ones corresponding to standard finite elements.
