During the last two decades, the wine auction market experienced non-monotonic dynamics and provided abnormal returns. When fine wine prices started to rise in the mid-1980s, wine investing transcended from a pastime into a serious investment transforming wine into a widespread investment activity. As an alternative asset, fine wine attracts increased attention among individual and institutional investors in recent years, particularly during the financial crisis due to its diversification potential. Economists also began evaluating wine as a new alternative asset class. In this thesis, we review the wine auction markets, study the price dynamics, and answer some fundamental questions. To build solid conclusions, we developed the largest French wine auction database encompassing the last 20 years. We summary our main contributions as follows. First, we review and explain the growth in recent global wine auction markets. Second, we construct price indices with hedonic regression models to observe market movements. Third, we investigate wine investment’s diversification potential. Wine in an optimal portfolio can improve the risk-return characteristics; however, the augmentation depends significantly on the market segmentation to which the investor applies it. Fourth, we analyze the wine price bubbles and collapses detection using a newly developed econometric approach. We elucidate strong evidence of two bubbles in the Bordeaux and Burgundy wine auction markets, whereas Rhône wine price behaved in a similar, but less significant, trend as Bordeaux and Burgundy wine markets. Finally, we examine the price determinants with a particular focus on the expert effect on this experienced good. We illuminate expert influence remains economically and statistically significant throughout the sample period. Using event study methodology, we disentangle the expert effect from other price variations and assert the market significantly reflects expert’s big re-ratings in the short term, yet the effect diminishes over time. However, this re-rating effect holds insignificant for modest changes. [less ▲]

Galois Theory plays a key role in many mathematical disciplines, such as number theory, algebra, topology, and geometry. This special volume of the Luxembourg based peer-reviewed mathematics journal "Travaux mathématiques" unites two instructional texts that have grown out of lectures delivered at the Winter School on Galois Theory held at the University of Luxembourg in February 2012. The contribution by Wulf-Dieter Geyer is about "Field Theory". It can be considered as a textbook in its own right. It manages to start at the level that any student possesses after any introductory algebra course and nevertheless to lead the reader to very advanced field theory at the frontier of current research, and to cover a wealth of material. Many examples are contained, which nicely enlighten the presented concepts, very often providing counterexamples that show why certain hypotheses are necessary. One also finds a chapter on the history of field theory as well as other historical remarks throughout the text. The second contribution addresses "Profinite Groups". It is written by Luis Ribes, who is the author of two standard books on this subject. Being necessarily much shorter than the two books, it has the feature of presenting an overview stressing the main concepts and the links with Galois Theory. Since for those proofs which are not included precise references are given, the notes, due to their conciseness and nevertheless great amount of material, constitute an excellent starting point for any Master or PhD student willing to learn this subject. Galois Theory plays a key role in many mathematical disciplines, such as number theory, algebra, topology, and geometry. This special volume of the Luxembourg based peer-reviewed mathematics journal "Travaux mathématiques" unites four instructional texts that have grown out of lectures delivered at the Winter School on Galois Theory held at the University of Luxembourg in February 2012. It also includes one research article. Gebhard Böckle's contribution is a quite comprehensive survey on Galois representations. It focusses on the key ideas, and the long list of recommended references enables the reader to pursue himself/herself any of the mentioned topics in greater depth. Michael Schein's notes sketch the proof due to Khare and Wintenberger of one of the major theorems in arithmetic algebraic geometry in recent years, namely Serre's Modularity Conjecture. Moshe Jarden's contribution is based on his book on algebraic patching. It develops the method of algebraic patching from scratch and gives applications in contemporary Galois theory. David Harbater's text is complementary to Jarden's notes, and describes recent applications of patching in other aspects of algebra, for example: differential algebra, local-global principles, quadratic forms, and more. The focus is on the big picture and on providing the reader with intuition. The research article by Wulf-Dieter Geyer and Moshe Jarden concerns model completeness of valued PAC fields. [less ▲]

Understand both uncoded and coded caching techniques in future wireless network design. Expert authors present new techniques that will help you to improve backhaul, load minimization, deployment cost reduction, security, energy efficiency and the quality of the user experience. Covering topics from high-level architectures to specific requirement-oriented caching design and analysis, including big-data enabled caching, caching in cloud-assisted 5G networks, and security, this is an essential resource for academic researchers, postgraduate students and engineers working in wireless communications. We present a novel framework for multi-group multicast precoding in the presence of three types of wireless users which are distributed among various multicast groups. A multi-antenna transmitter conveys information and/or energy to the groups of corresponding receivers using more than one multicast streams. The information specific users have conventional receiver architectures to process data, energy harvesting users collect energy using the non-linear energy harvesting module and each of the joint information decoding and energy harvesting capable user is assumed to employ the separated architecture with disparate non-linear energy harvesting and conventional information decoding units. In this context, we formulate and analyze the problem of total transmit power minimization for optimal precoder design subjected to minimum signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio and harvested energy demands at the respective users under three different scenarios. This problem is solved via semi-definite relaxation and the advantages of employing separate information and energy precoders are shown over joint and per-user information and energy precoder designs. Simulation results illustrate the benefits of proposed framework under several operating conditions and parameter values. [less ▲]

This letter studies the scheduling problem which determines how time-frequency resources of different numerologies can be allocated to support heterogeneous services in 5G wireless systems. Particularly, this problem aims at scheduling as many users as possible while meeting their required service delay and transmission data. To solve the underlying integer programming (IP) scheduling problem, we first transform it into an equivalent integer linear program (ILP) and then develop two algorithms, namely Resource Partitioning-based Algorithm (RPA) and Iterative Greedy Algorithm (IGA) to acquire efficient resource scheduling solutions. Numerical results show the desirable performance of the proposed algorithms with respect to the optimal solution and their complexity-performance tradeoffs. [less ▲]
