The review of the requirements of different cloud applications identified the need to consider communication processes explicitly and equally to the computing tasks. Following this observation, we propose a new communication-aware model for cloud computing applications, called CA-DAG. This model is based on Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAGs) that in addition to computing vertices include separate vertices to represent communications. Such a representation allows making separate resource allocation decisions, assigning processors to handle computing jobs and network resources for information transmissions, such as application database requests. This paper addresses performance issues of resource allocation in cloud computing. We review requirements of different cloud applications and identify the need of considering communication processes explicitly and equally to the computing tasks. Following this observation, we propose a new communication-aware model of cloud computing applications, called CA-DAG. This model is based on Directed Acyclic Graphs that in addition to computing vertices include separate vertices to represent communications. Such a representation allows making separate resource allocation decisions: assigning processors to handle computing jobs, and network resources for information transmissions. The proposed CA-DAG model creates space for optimization of a number of existing solutions to resource allocation and for developing novel scheduling schemes of improved efficiency. [less ▲]

The plasma membrane calcium ATPases (PMCA) are a family of genes which extrude Ca(2+) from the cell and are involved in the maintenance of intracellular free calcium levels and/or with Ca(2+) signalling, depending on the cell type. In the cardiovascular system, Ca(2+) is not only essential for contraction and relaxation but also has a vital role as a second messenger in signal transduction pathways. A complex array of mechanisms regulate intracellular free calcium levels in the heart and vasculature and a failure in these systems to maintain normal Ca(2+) homeostasis has been linked to both heart failure and hypertension. This article focuses on the functions of PMCA, in particular isoform 4 (PMCA4), in the heart and vasculature and the reported links between PMCAs and contractile function, cardiac hypertrophy, cardiac rhythm and sudden cardiac death, and blood pressure control and hypertension. It is becoming clear that this family of calcium extrusion pumps have essential roles in both cardiovascular health and disease. [less ▲]

Recently, two proteins of the S100 protein family, the myeloid-related calcium-binding proteins MRP-8 and MRP-14 have been implicated in the Ca2+-induced activation of the neutrophil NADPH oxidase (NOX2) but the mechanism underlying this process remains unclear. In this study, the role of MRP-8/14 in the Ca2+-dependent regulation of NOX2 activity was characterized in neutrophil-like HL-60 cells using small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) to knock-down endogenous MRP-8 and/or MRP-14 expression. Real-time PCR and Western blot revealed that MRP-8 and MRP-14 expression was 20 times higher in dimethylsulfoxide-differentiated neutrophil-like HL-60 cells compared to quiescent HL-60 cells. Knock-down of MRP-8 and MRP-14 in differentiated HL-60 cells decreased protein levels by 30 and 45% respectively. The impact of the reduced MRP-8/14 protein expression on NOX2 activity was investigated by measuring fMLF-induced H2O2 production. In cells simultaneously transfected with MRP-8 and MRP14 siRNAs, H2O2 production was reduced by 50%, suggesting that both MRP-8 and MRP-14 are required for NOX2 activity; single knock-downs were inefficient. To elucidate the role of Ca2+ in MRP8/14, and consequently in NOX2 activation, siRNA-transfected cells were treated with the Ca2+ ionophore ionomycin prior to stimulation with PMA, a Ca2+-independent protein kinase C activator. PMA-induced H2O2 production was enhanced by ionomycin. This amplification of NOX2 activity was abolished by MRP8/14 knock-down, indicating that both MRP-8 and MRP-14 are necessary to regulate Ca2+-induced NOX2 activation. Taken together, our results suggest that the mechanism of MRPs activation is highly dependent on the increase of intracellular Ca2+ level for a full activation of NOX2. [less ▲]

Edge caching has received much attention as a promising technique to overcome the stringent latency and data-hungry challenges in the future generation wireless networks. Meanwhile, full-duplex (FD) transmission can improve the spectral efficiency by allowing a node to receive and transmit on the same frequency band simultaneously. In this paper, we investigate the delivery time performance of a cache-aided FD system, in which an edge node, operates in FD mode, serves users via wireless channels and is equipped with a cache memory. Firstly, we derive a closed-form expression for the average delivery time by taking into account the uncertainties of both backhaul and access wireless channels. The derived analysis allows the examination of the impact of the key parameters, e.g., cache size and transmit power. Secondly, a power optimization problem is formulated to minimize the average delivery time. To deal with the non-convexity of the formulated problem, we propose an iterative optimization algorithm based on the bisection method. Finally, numerical results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, which can significantly reduce the delivery time compared to the FD reference and the half-duplex counterpart. In this paper, we propose a novel joint caching and massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission scheme, referred to as cache-aided massive MIMO, for advanced downlink cellular communications. In addition to reaping the conventional advantages of caching and massive MIMO, the proposed scheme also exploits the side information provided by cached files for interference cancellation at the receivers. This interference cancellation increases the degrees of freedom available for precoding design. In addition, the power freed by the cache-enabled offloading can benefit the transmissions to the users requesting non-cached files. The resulting performance gains are not possible if caching and massive MIMO are designed separately. We analyze the performance of cache-aided massive MIMO for cache-dependent maximum-ratio transmission (MRT), zero-forcing (ZF) precoding, and regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoding. Lower bounds on the ergodic achievable rates are derived in closed form for MRT and ZF precoding. The ergodic achievable rate of RZF precoding is obtained for the case when the numbers of transmit antennas and users are large but their ratio is fixed. Compared to conventional massive MIMO, the proposed cache-aided massive MIMO scheme achieves a significantly higher ergodic rate especially when the number of users approaches the number of transmit antennas. In this paper, we investigate the performance of cache enabled millimeter wave (mmWave) ad-hoc network, where randomly distributed nodes are supported by a cache memory. Specifically, we study the optimal caching placement at the desirable mmWave node using a network model that accounts for the uncertainties in node locations and blockages. We then characterize the average success probability of content delivery. As a desirable side effect, certain factors like the density of nodes and increased antenna gain, can significantly increase the cache hit ratio in mmWave networks. However, a trade-off between the cache hit probability and the average successful content delivery probability with respect to the density of nodes is presented. [less ▲]

The narrow-beam operation in millimeter wave (mmWave) networks minimizes the network interference leading to a noise-limited networks in contrast with interference-limited ones. The medium access control (MAC) layer throughput, and interference management strategies heavily depend on the noise-limited or interference-limited regime. Yet, these regimes are not considered in recent mmWave MAC layer designs, which can potentially have disastrous consequences on the communication performance. In this paper, we investigate the performance of cache-enabled MAC based mmWave ad-hoc networks, where randomly distributed nodes are supported by a cache. The adhoc nodes are modeled as homogenous Poisson Point Processes (PPP). Specifically, we study the optimal content placement (or caching placement) at desirable mmWave nodes using a network model that accounts for uncertainties both in node locations and blockages. We propose a contention-based multimedia delivery protocol to avoid collisions among the concurrent transmissions. Subsequently, only the node with smallest back-off timer amongst its contenders is allowed to transmit. We then characterize the average success probability of content delivery. We also characterize the cache hit ratio probability, and transmission probability of this system under essential factors, such as blockages, node density, path loss and caching parameters. [less ▲]

In this paper, we propose a cache-aided non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme for spectrally efficient downlink transmission. The proposed scheme not only reaps the benefits associated with NOMA and caching, but also exploits the data cached at the users for interference cancellation. As a consequence, caching can help to reduce the residual interference power, making multiple decoding orders at the users feasible. The resulting flexibility in decoding can be exploited for improved NOMA detection. We characterize the achievable rate region of cache-aided NOMA and derive the Pareto optimal rate tuples forming the boundary of the rate region. Moreover, we optimize cache-aided NOMA for minimization of the time required for completing file delivery. The optimal decoding order and the optimal transmit power and rate allocation are derived as functions of the cache status, the file sizes, and the channel conditions. Simulation results confirm that, compared to several baseline schemes, the proposed cache-aided NOMA scheme significantly expands the achievable rate region and increases the sum rate for downlink transmission, which translates into substantially reduced file delivery times. In this paper, we investigate the performance of cache-assisted simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) cooperative systems, in which one source communicates with one destination via the aid of multiple relays. In order to prolong the relays’ serving time, the relays are assumed to be equipped with a cache memory and energy harvesting (EH) capability. Based on the time-splitting mechanism, we analyze the effect of caching on the system performance in terms of the serving throughput and the stored energy at the relay. In particular, two optimization problems are formulated to maximize the relay-destination throughput and the energy stored at the relay subject to some quality-of-service (QoS) constraints, respectively. By using the KKT conditions and with the help of the Lambert function, closed-form solutions are obtained for the two formulated problems. In order to further improve the performance, a relay selection policy is introduced to select the best relay based on either the maximum throughput between the relays’ and destination link or maximum stored energy at the relay, for conveying information to the destination. Numerical results reveal significant benefits of incorporating caching capabilities to SWIPT systems, in terms of improved serving time, throughput and energy harvesting performance at the relays. Fast growth of Internet content and availability of electronic devices such as smart phones and laptops has created an explosive content demand. As one of the 5G technology enablers, caching is a promising technique to off-load the network backhaul and reduce the content delivery delay. Satellite communications provides immense area coverage and high data rate, hence, it can be used for large-scale content placement in the caches. In this work, we propose using hybrid mono/multi-beam satellite-terrestrial backhaul network for off-line edge caching of cellular base stations in order to reduce the traffic of terrestrial network. The off-line caching approach is comprised of content placement and content delivery phases. The content placement phase is performed based on local and global content popularities assuming that the content popularity follows Zipf-like distribution. In addition, we propose an approach to generate local content popularities based on a reference Zipf-like distribution to keep the correlation of content popularity. Simulation results show that the hybrid satellite-terrestrial architecture considerably reduces the content placement time while sustaining the cache hit ratio quite close to the upper-bound compared to the satellite-only method. Rhabdomyosarcomas bear a morphological and genetic resemblance to developing skeletal muscle. Apart from myogenic marker genes (bHLH factors, myosin, actin), cell adhesion molecules such as N-cadherin and N-CAM have been reported to be expressed both in rhabdomyosarcomas and during myogenesis. The present study demonstrates the expression of another cadherin, cadherin-11, in rhabdomyosarcomas and during differentiation of myoblasts in vitro: cadherin-11, a predominantly mesenchymal cell adhesion molecule, is highly expressed in embryonal rhabdomyosarcomas and alveolar rhabdomyosarcomas, which do not bear the Pax-3-FKHR fusion previously described. Cadherin-11 is down-regulated in normal skeletal muscle and after myotube formation in vitro. The results of this study suggest that cadherin-11 might be involved in myogenesis and that rhabdomyosarcomas may re-express or fail to down-regulate cadherin-11. Since alveolar rhabdomyosarcomas bearing the t(2;13) translocation do not express cadherin-11, it is postulated that Pax-3 and cadherin-11 might be linked and involved in the same myogenic pathway.
