[more ▼] This article examines the role that translation may have played in the development of medieval vernacular literature. It analyses an extract of an early 13th-c. translation into a hybrid French-Occitan vernacular of an 8th-c. historical text, the 'Liber Historiae Francorum'. The translation coincides with the adoption of narrative prose both in Old French and in Occitan literature, which reflects a growing interest in historical writings. The second half of the article compares the anecdote with the narrative structures and content of one of the troubadour 'vidas' and 'razos' - biographical texts in prose that emerged in the same period and regions as this translation. The article concludes by suggesting that the new vernacular genre shares narrative features with the early medieval Latin text that are preserved in its translation. [more ▼] The course will introduce to the new methods of VHA (Video History Analysis) applied on the Jewish society in Luxembourg. Students will learn how to use the new methods of using archival sources in digital era. During the individual sessions, participants will use the intuitive video editing software on the online IWitness platform, which allow to edit and create their own video recordings. The course also provides an overview of using and editing historical photos, maps and personal documents as archival source. Students will be divided in two working groups and each group will work on different locations, e.g. Group A will be in charge of designing a virtual tour in Luxembourg city and eventually it will be up to them which interesting places they select on and how many stops they include. Group B will create alike in the city of Esch-sur-Alzette. Participants will capture on camera current appearance of buildings and locations associated with Jewish heritage for later comparisons with original photos. The training’s second part offers skills about making a video interview with contemporary Luxembourgish Jewish narrators. Students will learn how to create a short but comprehensive interview right in the streets where they will ask potential Jewish narrators about their memories of specific locations associated with the Luxembourgish Jewish community. They will also learn to compare their work with professional interviews conducted with various interviewees from different Jewish generations. After the training, the participants will collect, edit and upload relevant materials that result in the practical output in the form of the interactive online tour within the phone application (IWalk). [more ▼] In this paper, we explore the concept of providing feedback to a user moving in front of a depth camera so that he is able to replicate a specific template action. This can be used as a home based rehabilitation system for stroke survivors, where the objective is for patients to practice and improve their daily life activities. Patients are guided in how to correctly perform an action by following feedback proposals. These proposals are presented in a human interpretable way. In order to align an action that was performed with the template action, we explore two different approaches, namely, Subsequence Dynamic Time Warping and Temporal Commonality Discovery. The first method aims to find the temporal alignment and the second one discovers the interval of the subsequence that shares similar content, after which standard Dynamic Time Warping can be used for the temporal alignment. Then, feedback proposals can be provided in order to correct the user with respect to the template action. Experimental results show that both methods have similar accuracy rate and the computational time is a decisive factor, where Subsequence Dynamic Time Warping achieves faster results. [more ▼] In order to combat violence and criminality, Johannesburg, in its striving to become a «world-class city», has installed a closed circuit television system in its Central Business District (CBD). The article analyses the social and spatial effects of this modern surveillance technology. It is argued that surveillance by camera essentially aims at protecting important areas. Its effect on reducing criminality does not appear to be as certain. Furthermore, closed circuit television has contributed towards a new territorialisation of space in the wake of Apartheid and towards the introduction of a privatized public culture. This means that a whole segment of the population appears to be excluded from such areas on socio-economic grounds.
