I distinguish between three kinds of reliabilism for epistemic justification, namely, pure reliabilism, evidential reliabilism, and reasons reliabilism, and I argue for reasons reliabilism. Pure reliabilism and evidential reliabilism are plagued, most importantly, by the generality problem, and they cannot deal adequately with defeater phenomena. One can avoid these problems only by jettisoning the idea of process reliability. The truth connection – which is essential for any kind of reliabilism – has to be provided in an altogether different way, namely, by means of facts in the world which serve as objective reasons (or evidence). So, as reasons reliabilism says, a justified belief has to be anchored in an objective reason which speaks in favor of its truth. Only in this way can intuitions about defeaters be preserved and explained. And reasons reliabilism can avoid the generality problem. [less ▲]

This chapter presents and discusses various steps to ensure empirical reliability and theoretical validity in the construction of competence scales in graduate surveys. The development of a scale to assess demands of the teacher profession and related abilities in graduates for a German tracer study project serves as an example. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), principal component analysis (PCA) and Cronbach’s coefficient alpha are employed to test the reliability of the scale. Differing results illustrate how the method applied influences decisions in the process of developing a scale. Our findings show that multidimensionality can only be tested appropriately by CFA; PCA renders no feasible or similar results to CFA depending on the predetermination of the number of factors; Cronbach’s alpha produces misleading results as the prerequisite assumption of unidimensionality is violated by the data. The purpose of the United Nations-guided process to establish Sustainable Development Goals is to galvanize governments and civil society to rise to the interlinked environmental, societal, and economic challenges we face in the Anthropocene. We argue that the process of setting Sustainable Development Goals should take three key aspects into consideration. First, it should embrace an integrated social-ecological system perspective and acknowledge the key dynamics that such systems entail, including the role of ecosystems in sustaining human wellbeing, multiple cross-scale interactions, and uncertain thresholds. Second, the process needs to address trade-offs between the ambition of goals and the feasibility in reaching them, recognizing biophysical, social, and political constraints. Third, the goal-setting exercise and the management of goal implementation need to be guided by existing knowledge about the principles, dynamics, and constraints of social change processes at all scales, from the individual to the global. Combining these three aspects will increase the chances of establishing and achieving effective Sustainable Development Goals. [less ▲]

In a previous work we have proposed that the Prokushkin-Vasiliev higher spin N = 2 supergravity on AdS3 is dual to a large N limit of the N = (2,2) ℂPN Kazama- Suzuki model. There is now strong evidence supporting this proposal based on symmetry and spectrum comparison. In this paper we will give further evidence for the duality by studying correlation functions. We compute boundary three point functions with two fermionic operators and one higher spin bosonic current in terms of the bulk supergravity theory. Then we compare with the results in the dual CFT, where the supersymmetry of the theory turns out to be very helpful. In particular we use it to confirm results conjectured in the bosonic case. Moreover, correlators with a fermionic current can be obtained via supersymmetry. © 2013 SISSA, Trieste, Italy. [less ▲]

Musical and cinematographic works are shared on a large scale via the Internet, often disrespecting copyrights. State initiatives seek to curtail online copyright infringements in different ways; the latest being graduated response schemes, where the alleged infringer is initially warned twice before he is sanctioned. In this context questions arise inter alia as regards the identification of the actual infringer, information rights of the rightsholder, reliability of tracking methods or judicial review of the allegations. In this context, it is of some interest to see how these questions are dealt with under similar regimes. This paper outlines how these questions and online copyright infringements in general are targeted under German civil law and how this has become a profitable tool of the music and film industry, in particular following the introduction of further information rights by the Enforcement Directive. It critically evaluates the recent developments in Germany and argues for a more restrictive interpretation of the relevant provision of the German Copyright Act. [less ▲]

This article will retrace the developmental lines of societal discourses concerning sexuality as well as the changing significance, acceptance, de-dramatization, and normalization of non-heteronormative, non-binary configurations of gender. In a first step, the figure of the continuum will be outlined as a theoretical framework and analytic tool for gender diversity. Subsequently, the article will illustrate certain key data points concerning the situation of women and men in Luxembourg and establish a comparison with the European and international situation. Selected research findings will be discussed, although it must be noted that, in the early 2010s, this research was still concerned exclusively with binary configurations of gender. Following a first synopsis, the paper will divert its attention to trans, intersex, non-binary, queer, and agender persons in Luxembourg and will introduce current national and international research findings concerning Luxembourg, as well as national ministerial measures and positionings. Following an excursion towards sexology in medicine as well as teaching and research environments at universities, the article will cast a glance towards the year 2050 and finally illuminate the relation, the four-way connection between physicality, psyche, social behavior, and desire to thus illustrate perspectives towards possible future developments. This paper presents a three-dimensional, extrinsically enriched meshfree method for initiation, branching, growth and coalescence of an arbitrary number of cracks in non-linear solids including large deformations, for statics and dynamics. The novelty of the methodology is that only an extrinsic discontinuous enrichment and no near-tip enrichment is required. Instead, a Lagrange multiplier field is added along the crack front to close the crack. This decreases the computational cost and removes difficulties involved with a branch enrichment. The results are compared to experimental data, and other simulations from the literature to show the robustness and accuracy of the method. [less ▲]

A complete understanding of the fracture behaviour of anisotropic rocks under elevated temperatures is fundamentally important for rock and reservoir engineering applications. This paper shows a three-dimensional numerical investigation of the fracture behaviour of anisotropic sandstone, with consideration of the effects of temperature and material anisotropy. In the study, a 3D semi-circular bend (SCB) model was established by using the Discrete Element Method (DEM). The thermal responses of different minerals and the strength anisotropy of incipient bedding planes were considered in the model. The DEM model was calibrated against a series of laboratory experiments on Midgley Grit sandstone (MGS) that exhibits intrinsic anisotropy. The pure mode I, mode II, and mixed-mode (I+II) fracture characteristics of the MGS were investigated under elevated temperatures (up to 600 �C) using the established DEM model. The thermal degradation (i.e., fracturing) of the rock, the fracture load, the evolution of micro-cracks, and the stress-strain relationship around notch tips were analysed, with emphasis on enlightening the micro-mechanisms underlying the fracture behaviour. This paper proposes a three-dimensional meshfree method for arbitrary crack initiation and propagation that ensures crack path continuity for non-linear material models and cohesive laws. The method is based on a local partition of unity. An extrinsic enrichment of the meshfree shape functions is used with discontinuous and near-front branch functions to close the crack front and improve accuracy. The crack is hereby modeled as a jump in the displacement field. The initiation and propagation of a crack is determined by the loss of hyperbolicity or the loss of material stability criterion. The method is applied to several static, quasi-static and dynamic crack problems. The numerical results very precisely replicate available experimental and analytical results. [less ▲]

Cell culture models in 3D have become an essential tool for the implementation of cellular models of neurodegenerative diseases. Parkinson’s disease (PD) is characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons from the substantia nigra. The study of PD at the cellular level requires a cellular model that recapitulates the complexity of those neurons affected in PD. Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (iPSC) technology is an efficient method for the derivation of dopaminergic neurons from human neuroepithelial stem cells (hNESC), hence proving to be a suitable tool to develop cellular models of PD. To obtain DA neurons from hNESC in a 3D culture, a protocol based on the use of small molecules and growth factors was implemented in a microfluidic device (OrganoPlate). This non PDMS device is based on the use of phaseguide (capillary pressure barriers that guide the liquid air interface) technology and the hydrogel matrigel as an extra cellular matrix surrogate. To characterize the morphological features and the electrophysiological activity of wild type hNESCs differentiated neuronal population, with those differentiated neurons carrying the LRRK2 mutation G2019S, a calcium imaging assay based on the use of a calcium sensitive dye (Fluo-4) and image analysis methods, were implemented. Additionally, several aspects of fluid flow dynamics, rheological properties of matrigel and its use as surrogate extracellular matrix were investigated. Final characterization of the differentiated neuronal population was done using an immunostaining assay and microscopy techniques. The yields of differentiated dopaminergic neurons in the 2 lane OrganoPlate were in the range of 13% to 27%. Morphological (length of processes) and electrophysiological (firing patterns) characteristics of wild type differentiated neurons and those carrying the LRRK2 mutation G2019S, were determined applying an image analysis pipeline. Velocity profiles and shear stress of fluorescent beads in matrigel flowing in culture lanes of the 2 lane OrganoPlate, were estimated using particle image velocimetry techniques. In this thesis, we integrate two new technologies to establish a new in vitro 3D cell based model to study several aspects of PD at the cellular level, aiming to establish a microfluidic cell culture experimental platform to study PD, using a systems biology approach. Due to its relevancy to point scoring, the spike is considered as one of the most important skills in fistball. Biomechanical analyses of this sport are very rare. In the present study, we performed a three-dimensional kinematic analysis of the fistball spike, which helps to specify performance parameters on a descriptive level. Recorded by four synchronized cameras (120 Hz) and linked to the motion capture software Simi Motion® 5.0, three female fistball players of the second German league (24–26 years, 1.63–1.69 m) performed several spikes under standardized conditions. Results show that the segment velocities of the arm reached their maximum successively from proximal to distal, following the principle of temporal coordination of single impulses. The wrist shows maximum speed when the fist hits the ball. The elbow joint angle performs a rapid transition from a strong flexion to a (almost) full extension; however, the extension is completed after the moment of ball impact. In contrast, the shoulder joint angle increases almost linearly until the fistball contact and decreases afterward. The findings can be used to optimize the training of the spike. [less ▲]

The novelty of the methodology fashioned in this work is that only an extrinsic discontinuous enrichment and no near-tip/asymptotic enrichment is required. Instead, a Lagrange multiplier field is added along the crack front to close the crack along the front. This decreases the computational cost and removes difficulties involved with a branch enrichment. Numerical examples treated include the pull-out of a reinforcement bar from a concrete block, and a Taylor bar impact with very large deformation and fragmentation.
