High throughput sequencing of 16S/18S rRNA gene is becoming an indispensable tool to explore microbial community ecology. To date, most of the studies using next generation amplicon sequencing of microorganisms involved in the anaerobic digestion process (AD) are based on the 454 pyrosequencing. However, the cost per read obtained with the Illumina technology is currently less than 1/100 of that for the 454 pyrosequencing, thus enabling throughout sequencing and larger number of samples to be analysed per study (e.g. given the current Miseq output, around 100 000 reads per sample can be expected for a pool of 96 libraries). Moreover, the Illumina technology is less biased by the GC content of the template and currently allows for a relatively long sequence read of 600 bp (2 x 300bp). This consideration is particularly important, since longer sequences permit for more accurate assignment to a taxonomic group. Here, we designed and optimized an Illumina–based 16S rRNA amplicon approach for a high throughput characterization of microbial communities from different AD. [less ▲]

The cardioprotective effects of estrogens are clearly established. However, the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Because programmed cell death (apoptosis) probably contributes to the loss of cardiac myocytes in heart failure and because estrogens prevent apoptosis in breast cancer cells, we investigated whether the loss of cardiac myocytes by programmed cell death could be prevented by physiological doses of 17beta-estradiol. Apoptosis of cultured cardiac myocytes was induced by staurosporine. 17beta-estradiol (10 nM) had an antiapoptotic effect as determined by morphological analysis, vital staining using the Hoechst dye 33342 and terminal transferase dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL). As a potential mechanism for the antiapoptotic effect of 17beta-estradiol we found a reduced activity of the ICE-like protease caspase-3 in hormone-treated myocytes. Furthermore, inhibition of apoptosis by estradiol was associated with a reduced activity of NF-kappaB transcription factors, particularly p65/RelA and p50. To our knowledge, these data provide the first indication that 17beta-estradiol in physiological concentrations inhibits apoptosis in cardiac myocytes. The antiapoptotic effect of estrogens might contribute to the known cardioprotective effect of estrogens and provides a starting point for the development of future treatment options. [less ▲]

Im Jahr 1789 hat Luxemburg als selbstständiger und unabhängiger Staat noch nicht existiert. Es bedurfte des Wiener Kongresses (1815) und der belgischen Revolution (1830), um aus Luxemburg ein souveräner Staat werden zu lassen. Bürgerliche Freiheiten wurden den Luxemburgern allerdings erst unter König-Großherzog Wilhelm II zugestanden. Mit dem Versammlungsrecht wurde der Bevölkerung auch das Vereinigungsrecht gewährt. Das Jahr 1848 bedeutet den Startpunkt und eine erste Wegmarke im Werden der Laienmusik im Großherzogtum. Im Jahr 1940 kam es mit der deutschen Besetzung zu einem abrupten Bruch einer Freiheit, die den Luxemburgern in fast einem Jahrhundert in Fleisch und Blut übergegangen zu sein schien. Der Neubeginn ab dem Jahr 1944 bedeutete eine weitere Wegmarke im Sinne von kultureller Betätigung in einer freiheitlichen Grundordnung. Im Diskurs um weitere Wegmarken sind keine politische, sondern eher soziale, pädagogische und technologische Umwälzungen ins Visier zu nehmen. [less ▲]

Vertical Si p-MOSFETs with channel lengths of 100nm were fabricated using selective low pressure chemical vapour deposition (LPCVD) epitaxial growth and conventional i-line lithography. The layout, called VOXFET, reduces gate to source/drain overlap capacitances, thus improving high speed applications. Transistors with a gate width of 12 um and gate oxide thickness of 10nm show transconductances gM of 200mS/mm and measured cutoff frequencies of fT = 8.7GHz and fMAX = 19.2 GHz. [less ▲]
