Biological systems (e.g., rats) have efficient and robust localization abilities provided by the so called, place cells, which are found in the hippocampus of rodents and primates (these cells encode locations of the animal's environment). This work seeks to model these place cells by employing three (biologically plausible) techniques: Reservoir Computing (RC), Slow Feature Analysis (SFA), and Independent Component Analysis (ICA). The proposed architecture is composed of three layers, where the bottom layer is a dynamic reservoir of recurrent nodes with fixed weights. The upper layers (SFA and ICA) provides a self-organized formation of place cells, learned in an unsupervised way. Experiments show that a simulated mobile robot with 17 noisy short-range distance sensors is able to self-localize in its environment with the proposed architecture, forming a spatial representation which is dependent on the robot direction. The article concerns the automatic calibration of a camera with radial distortion from a single image. It is known that, under the mild assumption of square pixels and zero skew, lines in the scene project into circles in the image, and three lines suffice to calibrate the camera up to an ambiguity between focal length and radial distortion. The calibration results highly depend on accurate circle estimation, which is hard to accomplish, because lines tend to project into short circular arcs. To overcome this problem, we show that, given a short circular arc edge, it is possible to robustly determine a line that goes through the center of the corresponding circle. These lines, henceforth called Lines of Circle Centres (LCCs), are used in a new method that detects sets of parallel lines and estimates the calibration parameters, including the center and amount of distortion, focal length, and camera orientation with respect to the Manhattan frame. Extensive experiments in both semi-synthetic and real images show that our algorithm outperforms state- of-the-art approaches in unsupervised calibration from a single image, while providing more information. In the slipstream of increasing research activities in early childhood education and care (ECEC) during the last decades also ethnographic studies became an important resource for the production of scientific knowledge in this research area. Going out from a review of relevant literature the paper intends to enquire about the status the field of ECEC has in different studies for the production of ethnographic knowledge about ECEC. After working out that the idea of „field” in ECEC-related ethnography mainly is defined in relation to a certain place the paper discusses the limits of this idea and the possibilities of an alternative conceptualization of the research field in ECEC-related ethnography, which may allow the field of ECEC becoming a discrete object of investigation. The observations, that founders of private crèches in Luxemburg possibly have a mainly non-pedagogic, but economic driven professional background, hire for the pedagogic management of their crèches qualified personnel and, compared to the gender ratio of specialized staff, are mainly male persons, cannot be confirmed with this qualitative research. The results show a certain dichotomy, but not, as suggested, concerning the job profiles ‘employed nursery nurse’ and ‘entrepreneur’. In contrast, within the group of entrepreneurs a tendency towards a dichotomy in terms of practicing tasks, early pedagogic or managerial, and size of the business, single or several crèches, appears. The assumption, that mainly male persons found private crèches cannot be confirmed. In contrary women appear to be in majority in all fields of business activity, so that there might possibly be a tendency towards a permeant feminisation of the whole private early pedagogic market. This is insofar surprising, as in this commercial part of the early pedagogic market with the new professional opportunity of being an entrepreneur due to the reflection of the literature more heterogeneity was expected.
