Cardiovascular parameters may have an impact on individual cardioafferent neural traffic which in turn plays a crucial role in emotion and symptom genesis of body-related mental disorders. We investigated, whether parameters as heart rate and blood pressure may be determinants of cardiac modulation of startle (CMS), a ―background‖ methodology for assessing baro-afferent signal transmission. Therefore, 30 healthy volunteers received acoustic startle stimuli (105 dB) at 9 different latencies relative to the R-wave (R + 0, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, and 800 ms; randomized order) after a resting period in which cardiovascular data (Heart rate (HR), heartrate variability (HRV), Pulse transit time (PTT), blood pressure (BP) and blood pressure variability (BPV)) were assessed. We found a strong positive association between CMS and PTT. Stroke volume, which is directly linked to PTT, may have an impact on this relationship, as it does on interoception. We conclude that PTT is associated with cardiac modulation of startle and that stroke volume may play an important role in this relationship. [less ▲]

Placing the design and use of computing devices into a broader context, I focus on the societal, business, and labour developments at the basis of new computer models. One of five carefully selected case studies considers the use of Powers-Samas and later I.C.T. punched card equipment in accounting at the Helena Rubinstein make-up concern in London during the 1950s. For each case my research looks into changes in occupations after the introduction of new computer models, as well as its influence on the work space and workflow of employees. Finally, I study gender stereotypes in advertisements of the computers, and in this case of the punched card equipment. During the Work in Progress session I will briefly introduce my overall research approach and demonstrate which sources are available, and what is still missing for the punched card equipment case study. In the aftermath of the financial crisis, the individual liability of senior managers has been rediscovered as an important element in effectively countering economic and financial crime. Mainstream enforcement practices against white-collar crime in recent years, focusing mostly on the legal entity or the low- and mid-level employees, have been largely unsuccessful. The punishment of large corporations for economic offences has indeed been confronted with the “too big to jail” dilemma, and with concerns for the negative spillovers that their collapse may entail for employees, shareholders and consumers. The individual “rogue employee”, on the other hand, may be fungible and easily sacrificed as a scapegoat. The recent debate has therefore brought back to centre-stage the individual liability of senior managers, which is essential to close any “responsibility gap”. But are the ordinary rules of criminal law fit and adequate to hold senior managers accountable? This volume, presenting the findings of a study led by the University of Luxembourg and co-financed by the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF), aims to contribute to this debate with a special focus on the liability of senior managers for the commission of offences against the financial interests of the EU. It compares the criminal liability regimes for senior managers in five Member States (Finland, France, Germany, The Netherlands and Poland) and delivers a set of policy recommendations for establishing the liability of senior managers in compliance with the general principles of criminal law and respect for fundamental rights.
