In the field of façade engineering, structural silicone sealants have been used in adhesively bonded connections since the 1960s. The low strength and stiffness of silicone rubber compared to other types of adhesives are compensated by the excellent adhesion properties and the good resistance against ageing and environmental influences, like UV radiation. Silicone sealants show a pronounced nonlinear material behaviour. The applicable design concepts in civil engineering propose simplified design equations, which are based on the assumption of a linear material law. Due to the current state of knowledge and to compensate the simplified model assumptions in the design concept, high reduction factors on the material strength and many restrictions on applications are defined. In order to overcome these drawbacks, the stress state within the sealant is increasingly described using the Finite Element Method. Considering the results of these analysis, the assessment of both the complex stress states with a suitable failure criterion and the influence of stress singularities on the failure behaviour constitute inevitable questions. The present work addresses these two questions. In the first step, the strain magnitude has been determined as a suitable failure criterion for the defect-free bulk material of the considered Dow Corning® 993 structural silicone sealant, subjected to a quasi-static loading. The failure criterion has been calibrated using the results of uniaxial tension as well as circular shear tests and validated with the results of compression tests. The strain magnitude is a strain-based failure criterion, which can be seen as a measure for the distortion of the molecular chains. In a second step, the stress distribution of the single-lap shear joint has been investigated in detail. For the assessment of the singular stresses and strains at the edge area of the interface between the adhesive and the substrate, referred to as two-material wedge, the so-called coupled stress and energy criterion, a concept of Finite Fracture Mechanics, was extended to nonlinear elastic material behaviour. Based on results of conduced simple shear tests on small bonded connections with varying adhesive thicknesses and overlap lengths, the coupled criterion was used to predict the crack initiation loads and a good agreement with the experimentally recorded values was obtained. Knowing the strength and the critical energy release rate of the material, the crack initiation load and the corresponding crack length are determined in the coupled criterion by solving an optimisation problem based on a Finite Element Analysis. The stress partial criterion has been modified to consider the strain magnitude as a failure criterion. In order to analyse the energy partial criterion, the critical energy release rate of Dow Corning® 993 structural silicone sealant has been determined in Double Cantilever Beam tests using the evaluation method based on the J-integral approach. Furthermore, concepts of the Theory of Critical Distances were used to determine the failure loads of the small scale tests. Unlike as for the notched circular shear tests and the tension tests on small scale bonded connections, good predictions were found in the Finite Element Analysis for the simple shear specimens, when a constant element size and formulation at the vicinity of the two-material wedge were used. Similar results were obtained with the point method and the control volume approach. These findings indicate that the characteristic material length for silicone rubber is not constant. [less ▲]

The 2015 Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan provides quite ambitiously and laudably for the creation of the Hybrid Court for South Sudan under the auspices of the African Union. The article is an extract from the author’s 2016 LL.M. dissertation submitted to the University of Pretoria. It critically examines the salient features of the proposed court with the aim of testing the court’s ability to effectively address historical grievances and injustices in South Sudan. In so doing, the article draws lessons from similar mechanisms in Africa and beyond. It also interrogates the role of the African Union and South Sudan in operationalising this court. It reveals strengths as well as weaknesses in the proposed design of the court as well as in the ability of the African Union and South Sudan to fulfil their obligations. Despite these weaknesses, the article argues that by harnessing the strengths identified and learning from lessons from across the continent, the African Union (AU) and South Sudan can overcome the anticipated challenges and operationalise a hybrid court which will effectively deliver sustainable justice to the victims of international crimes committed during the South Sudan civil war. This review of the literature tackles the question of the psychological benefits linked to gardening in older adults. First, the current data on these benefits are reviewed, and the findings reveal that gardening is linked to feelings of accomplishment, well-being and peace, a decrease of depressive symptoms, a protective effect on cognitive functions as well as the development of social links for community living older adults. In institutionalized older adults, gardening promotes internal locus of control and well-being, and is related to a decrease of sadness and anxiety. Second, several explanatory theories are discussed. All of them postulate an action on the cognitive and/or emotional spheres, which were included into a integrated model that must be tested in future research. In conclusion, gardening appears to be a beneficial activity for promoting older adults’ functioning but the current knowledge still has to be extended to understand the specific mechanisms of action. This deeper understanding is necessary in order to improve the future actions depending on this activity. [less ▲]

We investigate some finitely-valued generalizations of propositional dynamic logic with tests. We start by introducing the n+1-valued Kripke models and a corresponding language based on a modal extension of Łukasiewicz many-valued logic. We illustrate the definitions by providing a framework for an analysis of the Rényi - Ulam searching game with errors. Our main result is the axiomatization of the theory of the n+1-valued Kripke models. This result is obtained through filtration of the canonical model of the smallest n+1-valued propositional dynamic logic. [less ▲]

Self-assembly is particularly important for soft condensed matter. It may lead to manifold equilibrium or non-equilibrium structures and macroscopic properties of soft materials. The self-organization may be induced by changes in environmental conditions such as temperature, pH and irradiation by light. Among the different polymer families, the stimuli-responsive polymers are particularly sensitive to external stimuli. A structural instability, which is usually related to a demixing phase transition, commonly occurs for stimuli-responsive polymer systems. For such aqueous polymer solutions and hydrogels, a demixing transition of the Lower Critical Solution Temperature (LCST) type often happens, this means that the segregation occurs upon heating. Its macroscopic order parameter is attributed to the difference in mass concentration within the segregated state. Since the variation in mass density is a closely related quantity, the transition is also called a volume phase transition. In case of hydrogels, the order parameter also is the macroscopic deformation. In consequence the related susceptibility is the isothermal compressibility and the demixing transition is denoted as being ferroelastic. In this thesis, basic aspects of the static, kinetic and dynamical nature of the LCSTtype demixing transition are analyzed. Aqueous solutions of the thermo-responsive model homopolymer poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) are studied. Part of the phase diagram is probed by varying the polymer concentration in solution and the temperature. In part unconventional experimental techniques were used to access the macroscopic order parameter susceptibilities, like the dynamical volume expansion coefficient, and linear and nonlinear elastic properties at GHz frequencies. The major experimental technique is Temperature Modulated Optical Refractometry (TMOR), which has recently been developed in collaboration with the company Anton Paar (Seelze, Germany) and patented in 2012 by the University of Luxembourg. First studies by Brillouin spectroscopy were carried out on the segregation of aqueous PNIPAM solutions. The linear and in particular nonlinear elastic moduli are much more affected than the thermal expansion coefficient by this phase transition. Furthermore, it could be shown that the specific refractivity is astonishingly sensitive, probably to the changes in molecular interactions, during segregation. This allows for a novel perspective on the microscopic order parameters of the transition. The key investigations of this thesis focus on kinetics and thermo-mechanical relaxation processes related to the segregation, studying optical and mechanical quantities by TMOR. Sinusoidal temperature perturbations were therefore applied around the demixing temperature of different PNIPAM solutions.
