Over the recent years, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles' (UAVs) technology developed rapidly. In turn shedding light on a wide range of potential civil and commercial applications ranging from mapping and surveillance, parcel delivery to more demanding ones that require UAVs to operate in heterogeneous swarms. However, with the great advantages UAVs bring, they are expected to soon dominate the shared, low-altitude airspace over populated cities, introducing multiple new research challenges in safely managing the unprecedented traffic demands. The main contribution of this work is addressing the complex problem of UAV traffic management at an abstract level by proposing a structure for the uncontrolled low-altitude airspace. The paper proposes a model of the airspace as a weighted multilayer network of nodes and airways and presents a set of experimental simulations of UAV traffic for the verification and validation of the model. Finally, the paper outlines our intended future work. [less ▲]

In this paper a safety-oriented model based software architecture for robotic solutions is proposed. The main focus herein is to consider aspects such as real-time, het- erogeneity, deployment, modeling and analysis of emerging effects as well as functional safety and to combine all aspects into an overall development approach. The architecture shall capture the complexity caused by the autonomy and mobility of the robot and support the developer with a suitable chain of evidence especially suited for the safety relevant functions. A use case comprising a lightweight robotic manipulator which will be integrated in a mobile service robot underlines the feasibility of this approach. [less ▲]

The manner by which genotype and environment affect complex phenotypes is one of the fundamental questions in biology. In this study, we quantified the transcriptome--a subset of the metabolome--and, using targeted proteomics, quantified a subset of the liver proteome from 40 strains of the BXD mouse genetic reference population on two diverse diets. We discovered dozens of transcript, protein, and metabolite QTLs, several of which linked to metabolic phenotypes. Most prominently, Dhtkd1 was identified as a primary regulator of 2-aminoadipate, explaining variance in fasted glucose and diabetes status in both mice and humans. These integrated molecular profiles also allowed further characterization of complex pathways, particularly the mitochondrial unfolded protein response (UPR(mt)). UPR(mt) shows strikingly variant responses at the transcript and protein level that are remarkably conserved among C. elegans, mice, and humans. Overall, these examples demonstrate the value of an integrated multilayered omics approach to characterize complex metabolic phenotypes. [less ▲]

In transit corridors, multiple lines share a sequence of consecutive stops to provide higher joint frequency in higher demand areas. A key challenge is to coordinate the transition from single line to joint operation. A holding control strategy aimed at minimizing passenger travel times is introduced for lines merging into a shared corridor, accounting for the coordination of vehicle arrivals from the merging lines as well as the regularity of each line. The criterion is tested using an artificial network and a real-world network to analyze the impact of demand distribution and compare cooperative versus single line control. We illustrate how the real-time strategy yields overall passenger gains, depending on the composition of different user groups. Results are assessed based on operation and passenger performance indicators and show that coordination is achieved. When combined with joint control in the common part, the proposed approach achieves consistentnetwork-wide travel time benefits. [less ▲]

Transportation is an important sector of the global economy. The rapid urbanization and urban sprawl comes with continuous demand for additional transportation infrastructure in order to satisfy the increasing and variable demand. Public transportation is a major contributor in alleviating traffic congestion in the modern megacities and provide a sustainable alternative to car for accessibility. Public transport operation is inherently stochastic due to the high variability in travel times and passenger demand. This yields to disruptions and undesired phenomena such as vehicles arriving in platoons at stops. Due to the correlation between the headway between vehicles and passenger demand, bunching leads to long waiting time at stops, overcrowded vehicles, discomfort for the passengers and from the operators side poor management of available resources and overall a low of service of the system. The introduction of intelligent transport systems provided innovative applications in order to monitor the operation, collect data and react dynamically to any disruption of the transit system. Advanced Public Transport Systems extended the range of control strategies and their objectives beyond schedule adherence and reliance on historical data alone. Among strategies, holding is a thoroughly investigated and applicable control strategy. With holding, a vehicle is instructed to remain at a designated stop for an additional amount of time after the completion of dwell time, until a criterion is fulfilled. Depending on the characteristics of the line the criterion aim for schedule adherence or regularity or minimization of passenger costs and its components. So far, holding is used for regulating single line operation. Beyond single line, it has been used for transfer synchronization at transfer hubs and recently has been extended to regulate the operation on consecutive stops that are served by multiple lines. The first part of this dissertation is dedicated to real time holding control of multiple lines. A rule based holding criterion is formulated based on the passenger travel time that accounts for the passengers experiencing the control action. Total holding time is estimated based on the size of all passenger groups that interact. The formulated criterion can be applied on all different parts of trunk and branch network. Additionally, the criterion is coupled with a rule based criterion for synchronization and the decision between the two is taken based on the passenger cost. The criterion has been tested for different trunk and branch networks and compared with different control schemes and its performance has been assessed using regularity indices as well as passenger cost indicators for the network in total but also per passenger group. Finally, an analysis has been conducted in order to define under which network and demand configuration multiline control can be preferred over single line control. Results shown that under specific demand distributions multiline control can outperform single line control in network level. Continuously new technologies are introduced to transit operation. Recently, Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems utilized in the form of Driver Advisory Systems (DAS) shown that can provide the same level of priority with transit signal priority without changing the time and the phases of a traffic light. However, until now the available DASs focus exclusively on public transport priority neglecting completely the sequence of the vehicles and the effects on the operation. In the second part of the dissertation, two widely used DASs are combined with holding in order to meet both the objective of reducing the number of stops at traffic signals and at the same time maintain regularity. Two hybrid controllers are introduced, a combination of two holding criteria and a combination of holding and speed advisory. Both controllers are tested using simulation in comparison to the independent application of the controllers and different levels of transit signal priority. The hybrid controllers can drastically reduce transit signal priority requests while they manage to achieve both objectives. [less ▲]

This paper is based in Luxembourg where a multilingual programme has been implemented in early childhood education in 2017. The research project examines the language use in daily communication and literacy activities of educators and parents in day care centres, as reported by educators in two online-questionnaires. The findings show that the educators and parents use multiple languages when communicating, singing and reading with children in the centres. In addition to French and Luxembourgish which dominate, they use five other languages. Their reported multilingual practice reflects their beliefs that speaking and reading in several languages promotes language learning. However, while the programme is multilingual, a range of home languages are marginalised. The educators produce a language hierarchy in the centres which the parents reproduce. While collaboration with parents can be effective in bringing home languages into day care centres, educators need to be aware of language hierarchies and ideologies. [less ▲]

This paper argues that multilingual/multicultural identity in Europe has reached a next level since we have entered the era of superdiversity. Under superdiversity we are confronted with a diversification of diversity: relations between ethnicity, citizenship, residence, origin, language, profession, etc. have become more complex and less predictable than before, and as a consequence there is a need to revisit, deconstruct and reinvent our theoretical toolkit to analyse language, culture, ethnicity, identity, etc. This contribution draws on ongoing ethnographic fieldwork in and around a Chinese complementary school in the Netherlands and is part of a larger project investigating discourses of inheritance and identities in multilingual European settings. It focuses on the ethnic and linguistic identifications of Dutch-Chinese youngsters on the Asian and Proud community of the Dutch social networking site Hyves, and shows how Dutch-Chinese youngsters of diverse backgrounds engage in creative languaging in „netnolectal‟ Dutch while discussing/celebrating their ethnic and linguistic identities. Focusing on young people‟s identities, this paper aims to entangle the complexities of being, speaking and learning Chinese in the Netherlands. It thereby explores the internal diversity within Chineseness and its functioning within, or repositioning as, a larger Asian identity as well as its relation to Dutch/European-ness. [less ▲]

Symposium: Spaces for translanguaging in diverse language learning situations While translanguaging has been described as a natural practice amongst multilinguals in our globalized world, it is uncommon in formal and informal educational institutions (Creese & Blackledge, 2010; García, 2009). Translanguaging capitalizes on the learners’ diverse resources and encourages them to draw on their entire semiotic repertoire thereby promoting deep level learning. It is transformative in that it contributes to cognitive and personal development, and develops language and literacy practices that challenge traditional teaching which tends to reproduce social inequalities (García & Wei, 2014). Our presentations focus on data from research projects in three countries that show how learning is mediated when practitioners (e.g. teachers, teacher assistants, educators, parents) adopt child-centred teaching models, implement a “funds of knowledge” theoretical perspective (Gonzalez, Moll & Armanti, 2005), create bridges between the home and school languages, and encourage translanguaging, including gestures and other body language. This view is particularly relevant to young children. We argue that translanguaging harmonizes with models of early years pedagogy which foreground the co-construction of learning between child and adult. We will present four qualitative, small-scale studies, three of them longitudinal. Research was undertaken in a community class in England, a nursery class in France, nursery and primary schools in Luxembourg and crèches and day care centres in Luxembourg. The researchers used a mix method approach comprising video and audio recordings, interviews, field notes and documents to collect data on regular intervals. The presentations will situate the studies within the local and national contexts that mediate the pedagogical practices and present interactions between the practitioners and the children aged between 3 and 11. The key discussion points are the need to create “safe spaces” (Conteh & Brock, 2011) in order to “activate” children’s and practitioners’ translanguaging abilities, the particular challenges practitioners face, and implications for policies and practice. Jean Conteh: Translanguaging as pedagogy in multilingual primary classrooms in England- from the margins to the mainstream Using data from small-scale, longitudinal, ethnographic research in a complementary class situated in a multilingual community in a city in the north of England, this presentation will analyse the interactions between multilingual teachers and their pupils, using a “funds of knowledge” theoretical perspective. It will consider the implications for policy and practice for both teaching and learning. Latisha Mary and Andrea Young: Supporting very young learners in transition from home to school: Translanguaging in a French nursery school class with emergent bilingual children. This paper focuses on the translanguaging practices of a teacher in France with three-year old children and their families. It illustrates how she harnesses the children’s language repertoires as resources and how she creates ‘safe spaces’. Her inclusive linguistic approach appears to facilitate the children’s learning and adjustment to their first year in formal education. Claudine Kirsch: Translanguaging of children and teachers during storytelling activities with iTEO in nursery and primary schools in Luxembourg The project addresses the need for innovative didactic methods to manage the diversity and heterogeneity in Luxembourg’s trilingual schools. The paper shows how learning takes place when teachers and emergent bilinguals translanguage during storytelling activities on the iPad App iTEO. Katja Andersen and Claudine Kirsch: Multilingual oracies in formal and informal settings in Luxembourg The empirical qualitative study, based on visual ethnography, structured interviews and a survey, is situated at the transition from formal to informal education sectors in Luxembourg.
