[less ▲]

Modern network intrusion detection systems rely on machine learning techniques to detect traffic anomalies and thus intruders. However, the ability to learn the network behaviour in real-time comes at a cost: malicious software can interfere with the learning process, and teach the intrusion detection system to accept dangerous traffic. This paper presents an intrusion detection system (IDS) that is able to detect common network attacks including but not limited to, denial-of-service, bot nets, intrusions, and network scans. With the help of the proposed example IDS, we show to what extent the training attack (and more sophisticated variants of it) has an impact on machine learning based detection schemes, and how it can be detected. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd [less ▲]

A. S. Byatt’s novel Possession (1990) revolves around questions of writing the past, more particularly the Victorian past, from the perspective of the late twentieth century. As outlined in the essay, Byatt’s novel stages various forms of possession, both material and immaterial, linking them to issues of identity and female autonomy as well as to epistemological and ethical notions of poetry and imagination. Possession is an ambivalent text in that it problematizes the ontological, epistemological and methodological problems of writing the past; at the same time, the novel asserts the desire to acquire knowledge of the past, exploring literary genres, poetry and imagination as various means of opening the past to the present. As a Neo-Victorian text, Possession re-evaluates perceived cliches about the Victorian age, rewriting it as an era of a benign humanism that counteracts late-twentieth-century doubts and insecurities. Objectives: In this study, we review the evidence and discuss how the digitalization affects the CHWs programs for tackling non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in low-and-middle income countries (LMICs). Methods: We conducted a review of literature covering two databases: PubMED and Embase. A total of 97 articles were abstracted for full text review of which 21 are included in the analysis. Existing theories were used to construct a conceptual framework for understanding how digitalization affects the prospects of CHW programs for NCDs. Results: We identified three benefits and three challenges of digitalization. Firstly, it will help improve the access and quality of services, notwithstanding its higher establishment and maintenance costs. Secondly, it will add efficiency in training and personnel management. Thirdly, it will leverage the use of data generated across grass-roots platforms to further research and evaluation. The challenges posed are related to funding, health literacy of CHWs, and systemic challenges related to motivating CHWs. More than 60 digital platforms were identified, including mobile based networking devices (used for behavioral change communication), Web-applications (used for contact tracking, reminder system, adherence tracing, data collection, and decision support), videoconference (used for decision support) and mobile applications (used for reminder system, supervision, patients’ management, hearing screening, and tele-consultation). Conclusion: The digitalization efforts of CHW programs are afflicted by many challenges, yet the rapid technological penetration and acceptability coupled with the gradual fall in costs constitute encouraging signals for the LMICs. Both CHWs interventions and digital technologies are not inexpensive, but they may provide better value for the money. [less ▲]

We use Chen's iterated integrals to integrate representations up to homotopy. That is, we construct an A-infinity functor from the representations up to homotopy of a Lie algebroid A to those of its infinity groupoid. This construction extends the usual integration of representations in Lie theory. We discuss several examples including Lie algebras and Poisson manifolds. The construction is based on an A-infinity version of de Rham's theorem due to Gugenheim. The integration procedure we explain here amounts to extending the construction of parallel transport for superconnections, introduced by Igusa and Block-Smith, to the case of certain differential graded manifolds. [less ▲]

There is no definition of the term “central administration” under Article 60(1)(b) of Brussels I; and Article 60 of Brussels I does not make specific provisions for locating the central administration of a subsidiary company within a corporate group. English Courts in Anglo American South Africa Limited after a re-evaluation of the correctness of previous decisions by English judges on the subject of Article 60(1)(b), provided an autonomous interpretation of central administration, and sought to apply the concept of central administration in a “European way” to a subsidiary company within a corporate group. The author challenges the approach of English judges for not referring the question of how Article 60(1)(b) applies to corporate groups to the CJEU. [less ▲]
