For history researchers, it is not a needless luxury to consider from time to time the content and the significance of the basic concepts they use, certainly if they have the ambition to interpret and/or explain history in addition to purely describing it. This self-reflection, compelled by the annually recurring dialogue with educational philosophers (cf. Smeyers & Depaepe, 2006),2 need not necessarily place an emphasis on philosophical abstraction but can just as well start from an examination of the history of one’s own research. Such an approach need not succumb to navel-gazing. Instead, such historical self-reflection possibly points to the creeping (and thereby largely unconscious) shifts in meaning that accompany various fashions (consider the swirling “turns” of recent years), which affect the social scientific vocabulary (historiographic, philosophical, pedagogical, psychological sociological, etc.). By rendering such developments explicit, the epistemological wrestling with the stream of experiences we call 'history', a process that can be chaotic, may in the future perhaps be somewhat less sloppy. Admittedly, even the most critical concepts that emerged from our own work were not always used with methodological care and/or theoretical purity. [less ▲]

One basic assumption to consider an additive utility function is the preferential independence. When interacting criteria are considered, this condition might be violated and a substitute to the classical weighted mean has to be adopted. The Choquet integral seems to be an adequate aggregation operator that extends the weighted mean and the ordered weighted average (OWA). The axiomatics that supports the Choquet integral is presented as well as its behavioral analysis with regards to veto and favor effects, degree of disjunction and measure of dispersion. One illustrative example of its application in the field of MCDM is provided. [less ▲]

We present a model allowing to determine the weights related to interacting criteria. The nature of the glassy state and of the glass transition of structural glasses is still a matter of debate. This debate stems predominantly from the kinetic features of the thermal glass transition. However the glass transition has at least two faces: the kinetic one which becomes apparent in the regime of low relaxation frequencies and a static one observed in static or frequency-clamped linear and non-linear susceptibilities. New results concerning the so-called ?-relaxation process show that the historical view of an unavoidable cross-over of this relaxation time with the experimental time scale is probably wrong and support instead the existence of an intrinsic glass transition. In order to prove this, three different experimental strategies have been applied: studying the glass transition at extremely long time scales, the investigation of properties which are not sensitive to the kinetics of the glass transition and studying glass transitions which do not depend at all on a forced external time scale. Advances in gravity instrumentation have allowed for the determination of the absolute acceleration of gravity to a precision of 3–5 μGal and observations of tidally driven changes in gravity on the order of nanogals. With observations of gravity and changes in gravity at these levels of precision we are able to investigate problems such as the resonance of the Earth's liquid inner core, to discriminate between the various ocean tidal models, understand the effects of atmospheric pressure loading on gravity observations, and perhaps to measure ice mass changes in Greenland. In this paper, we report on some of our results using absolute and superconducting gravimeter data. We describe a project to establish a site for international comparisons of absolute gravimeters in Luxembourg. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Auditor fee dependence on one client mitigates auditor independence and increases earnings management. Up to our knowledge we are the first to provide evidence on a positive relationship between positive discretionary working capital accruals and the auditor’s percentage of total and non-audit fee dependence on the German audit market. Our study is based on German listed companies from 2005–2011 and the „performance adjusted modified Jones Model”. Our empirical evidence contributes to the current proposals for a regulation on statutory audits of annual accounts of the European Commission and the controversy about advisory services and statutory Audit. Both the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex and alpha7beta1 integrin have critical roles in the maintenance of muscle integrity via the provision of mechanical links between muscle fibres and the basement membrane. Absence of either dystrophin or alpha7 integrin results in a muscular dystrophy. To clarify the role of alpha7 integrin and dystrophin in muscle development and function, we generated integrin alpha7/dystrophin double-mutant knockout (DKO) mice. Surprisingly, DKO mice survived post-natally and were indistinguishable from wild-type, integrin alpha7-deficient and mdx mice at birth, but died within 24-28 days. Histological analysis revealed a severe muscular dystrophy in DKO mice with endomysial fibrosis and ectopic calcification. Weight loss was correlated with the loss of muscle fibres, indicating that progressive muscle wasting in the double mutant was most likely due to inadequate muscle regeneration. The data further support that premature death of DKO mice is due to cardiac and/or respiratory failure. The integrin alpha7/dystrophin-deficient mouse model, therefore, resembles the pathological changes seen in Duchenne muscular dystrophy and suggests that the different clinical severity of dystrophin deficiency in human and mouse may be due to a fine-tuned difference in expression of dystrophin and integrin alpha7 in both species. Together, these findings indicate an essential role for integrin alpha7 in the maintenance of dystrophin-deficient muscles. [less ▲]

Canonical finger numeral configurations are named faster than less familiar finger configurations and activate a semantic place-coding representation as symbolic stimuli. However, this does not exclude categorically the possibility that mere visuo-perceptual differences between canonical and noncanonical finger configurations may induce differences in processing speed. This study capitalizes on the fact that, in typical visual-detection tasks, participants focus on low-level visuo-perceptual features to detect a target among distractors sharing the same high-level semantic features, producing the so-called pop-out effect. Participants had to decide whether a canonical finger configuration was present among a set of distractors expressing the same numerosity in a noncanonical way. The results showed that the time needed to detect the presence of the target grew linearly with the number of distractors. This indicates that the canonical target enjoyed no perceptual saliency among the noncanonical configurations (i.e., no pop-out effect) excluding visuo-perceptual differences as the source of the better identification of and semantic access of canonical configurations.
