By using some basic calculus of multiple integration, we provide an alternative expression of the integral $$ \int_{]a,b[^n} f(\mathbf{x},\min x_i,\max x_i) \, d\mathbf{x}, $$ in which the minimum and the maximum are replaced with two single variables. We demonstrate the usefulness of that expression in the computation of orness and andness average values of certain aggregation functions. By generalizing our result to Riemann-Stieltjes integrals, we also provide a method for the calculation of certain expected values and distribution functions. [less ▲]

We present a new approach on shape preserving estimation of probability distribution and density functions using wavelet methodology for multivariate dependent data. Our estimators preserve shape constraints such as monotonicity, positivity and integration to one, and allow for low spatial regularity of the underlying functions. As important application, we discuss conditional quantile estimation for financial time series data. We show that our methodology can be easily implemented with B-splines, and performs well in a finite sample situation, through Monte Carlo simulations. [less ▲]

A MULTIVERSE AXIOM INDUCTION FRAMEWORK The multiverse paradigm in set theory does not only reflect philosophical preferences, or set up a new playground for mathematical investigation, but it also offers a powerful methodological tool for investigating the conceptual foundations of set theory by guiding the search for and the evaluation of new set-theoretic axioms or facts. The prototypical example is Friedman's Hyperuniverse Program (HUP). Our goal is to develop an abstract inferential framework generalizing the HUP whose (defeasible, inductive) inference methods are meant to identify or validate new axioms. We consider nonmonotonic consequence relations |~, parametrized by specifications of the multiverse and set-theoretic desiderata, which associate with any suitable ZFC + X new - not necessarily classically derivable - candidate truths. The desiderata could, for instance, consist of consistency conditions or maximization demands w.r.t. preorders over universes. There are a number of possible inductive strategies, but it doesn't seem that conceptual considerations at the level of set theory are sufficient to decide among them. The idea is therefore to also assess the inferential level and to use rationality postulates for nonmonotonic inference, heavily investigated within AI for modeling commonsense reasoning, to classify and evaluate such procedures. This is however a non-trivial task because of the special characteristics of axiom induction. [less ▲]

In educational sciences, the gathering of video diaries as a form of "student standpoint research" has become increasingly important, and critical developments in educational ethnography support participatory frameworks of ethnographic research projects. Legitimizing research subjects' voices through their own data collection corresponds to ethical demands of democratic, dialogical, multivoiced research. In this chapter, we combine perspectives from two different research projects in primary schools in Luxembourg to shed light on the methodological and practical underpinnings of collectively gathered audio-visual ethnographic data. Drawing on video data collected by children in schools, we consider ways in which children’s documentation of their school experiences allows for dynamic approaches to space, context, time, reality and identity. As we analyze the coherence between this kind of multiperspectival data and the demands of ethnographic research we seek to demonstrate the extents to which such methods allow for an interpretation of institutionally embedded, highly performative and individualised data authored by the children themselves. We give an explicit description of fundamental domains associated to the p-adic uniformisa- tion of families of Shimura curves of discriminant Dp and level N ≥ 1, for which the one-sided ideal class number h(D,N) is 1. The obtained results generalise those in [19, Ch. IX] for Shimura curves of discriminant 2p and level N = 1. The method we present here enables us to find Mumford curves covering Shimura curves, together with a free system of generators for the associated Schottky groups, p-adic good fundamental domains and their stable reduction- graphs. This is based on a detailed study of the modular arithmetic of an Eichler order of level N inside the definite quaternion algebra of discriminant D, for which we generalise classical results of Hurwitz [20]. As an application, we prove general formulas for the reduction-graphs with lengths at p of the considered families of Shimura curves. [less ▲]

Neuronal dense-core vesicles (DCVs) contain diverse cargo crucial for brain development and function, but the mechanisms that control their release are largely unknown. We quantified activity-dependent DCV release in hippocampal neurons at single vesicle resolution. DCVs fused preferentially at synaptic terminals. DCVs also fused at extrasynaptic sites but only after prolonged stimulation. In munc13-1/2-null mutant neurons, synaptic DCV release was reduced but not abolished, and synaptic preference was lost. The remaining fusion required prolonged stimulation, similar to extrasynaptic fusion in wild-type neurons. Conversely, Munc13-1 overexpression (M13OE) promoted extrasynaptic DCV release, also without prolonged stimulation. Thus, Munc13-1/2 facilitate DCV fusion but, unlike for synaptic vesicles, are not essential for DCV release, and M13OE is sufficient to produce efficient DCV release extrasynaptically. [less ▲]

[less ▲]
