L’approche statistique du type de « valeur ajoutée » (« value added ») a comme but de quantifier l’effet des acteurs pédagogiques sur la performance des élèves, indépendamment de leur origine (p. ex. Braun, 2005), c’est-à-dire de déterminer la valeur dans la performance de l’élève du fait qu’il étudie avec tel professeur ou /et qu’il soit dans telle école. Ces indices de valeur ajoutée une fois déterminés sont souvent utilisés pour prendre des décisions de reddition de compte (« accountability » ; p.ex. Sanders, 2000) L’idée est de faire une évaluation standardisée de la qualité des enseignants ou des écoles à travers l’évolution des résultats des élèves. Même si les valeurs ajoutées sont devenues plus populaires durant ces dernières années, il n’y a pas de consensus concernant la méthode pour les calculer, ni sur l’intégration de variables explicatives (p. ex. Newton et al., 2010). Le but de notre étude est de faire une revue de littérature concernant les valeurs ajoutées en éducation primaire et secondaire. Pour ce faire, nous avons utilisé les bases de données ERIC, Scopus, PsycINFO et Psyndex et nous avons analysé et classifié rigoureusement 674 études de 32 pays différents. La moitié des études recensées concerne les valeurs ajoutées au niveau des enseignants et les autres concernent celles au niveau des écoles ou directeurs. 370 études ont utilisé des données empiriques pour calculer des indices de valeur ajoutée. Dans un certain nombre d’études, les variables utilisées sont précisées, mais dans approximativement 15% des publications, le modèle statistique utilisé n’est pas spécifié. La plupart des études ont utilisé la performance des années précédentes des élèves comme prédicteur ; en revanche, des variables cognitives ou motivationnelles des élèves n’ont presque jamais été prises en considération. Cette revue de littérature permet de souligner, en vue des enjeux politiques importants des valeurs ajoutées, qu’il est nécessaire d’avoir plus de transparence, rigueur et consensus, surtout sur le plan méthodologique. The present paper is concerned with methods of three-mode factor analysis to obtain a dimensional representation of three-way data. Classifying the methods by the number of derived spaces and their interrelations yields two distinct classes of models: CANDECOMP (Carroll & Chang, 1970), PARAFAC (Harshman, 1976) and SUMMAX (Orlik, 1980) rest on a basic trilinear decornposition of the data defining a separate space for each mode, whereas Tucker's (1964a thrce-mode factor analysis and SUMMA X in its extended form use a quadeilinear model specifying an additional core matrix. Associated with the current classification are different properties of the two model classes which refer to the number of substantial dimensions, their interpretation and the orientation of dimensions which is subject to rotations within the quadrilinear dass and uniquely determined by trilinear methods. Considering the different characteristics of the methods, formal relations between the classes have been found under very restrictive conditions only. However, there exist some general connections between trilinear and quadrilinear models. CANDECOMP and PARAFAC derive from the trilinear SUMMAX model by rescaling and permutation of axes, and the methodological link between the Tucker model and SUMMAX is given by orthogonal rotations of the SUMMAX configuration. These relationships are shown in an empirical example and their implications for the distinct concepts of individual differences within the two classes of methods are discussed. [less ▲]

Die Systemkombination aus Wärmepumpe und solarthermischen Absorber, basierend auf freier Konvektion und Strahlung, und Photovoltaik (PV) in einem Modul (PVT-Modul) kann aufgrund der Reduzierung des Heizwärmebedarfs von Gebäuden und des verstärkten Betriebs von Wärmepumpen während der Niedrigstrompreiszeiten am Tage und dem damit verbundenen höheren Strahlungsanteil der Umweltwärme zukünftig eine Alternative zu zwangskonvektions-basierten Luft-Wärmepumpen sein. Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit einem CO2-Wärmepumpensystem, bestehend aus einem neuartigen Solar-Hybridmodul, welches einen mikrokanal-basierten Verdampfer einer CO2-Wärmepumpe mit einem PV-Modul vereint (PVT-direkt). Um die Machbarkeit des neuartigen PVT-direkt-Wärmepumpensystems zu demonstrieren, wird im Rahmen eines Forschungsprojekts ein funktionsfähiges PVT-direkt-Modul konstruiert und schließlich als Teil eines CO2-Wärmepumpensystems getestet und modelliert. Die Besonderheit der Kombination eines thermischen Absorbers mit einer Wärmepumpe liegt in der Erschließung der Solarenergie und Umgebungsenergie als Energiequelle. Hierbei ist die Kenntnis über die thermische Leistung des PVT-Moduls unter anderem durch den konvektiven Wärmeübergang zwischen dem PVT-Modul und der Umgebung relevant. Sowohl der Modulneigungswinkel (Anströmwinkel) und die Windrichtung (Azimutwinkel) haben einen nicht zu vernachlässigenden Einfluss auf den resultierenden Wärmeübergangskoeffi-zienten der erzwungenen Konvektion. Da im Rahmen einer Literaturrecherche keine für das PVT-Modul direkt zu übertragenden experimentelle Untersuchungen und Berechnungsgrundlagen zur Bestimmung des konvektiven Wärmeübergangs gefunden werden konnten, wurde mit Hilfe der Software ANSYS Fluent eine CFD-Simulation zum konvektiven Wärmeübergang am PVT-Modul durchgeführt, deren Ergebnisse in dieser Arbeit präsentiert werden. Embedded software in medical devices is becoming ubiquitous and increasing in content and complexity. This paper gives an outline of a visual model of a cardiac pacemaker system, a case study from the grand challenge in software verification. The model is expressed in the Visual Contract Language (VCL), a formal modelling language that describes predicates visually. From VCL diagrams it is possible to generate Z specifications. A specific class of energy harvester devices for renewable energy resources allows conversion of ambient fluid flow energy to electrical energy via flow-induced vibrations of a piezo-ceramic composite structure positioned in the flow field. This energy converter technology simultaneously involves the interaction of a composite structure and a surrounding fluid, the electric charge accumulated in the piezo-ceramic material and a controlling electrical circuit. In order to predict the efficiency and operational properties of such future devices and to increase their robustness and performance, a mathematical and numerical model of the complex physical system is required to allow systematic computational investigation of the involved phenomena and coupling characteristics. The presentation will discuss a monolithic modelling approach that allows simultaneous analysis of the harvester, which involves surface-coupled fluid-structure interaction, volume-coupled electro-mechanics and a controlling energy harvesting circuit. Based on a finite element discretisation of the weighted residual form of the governing equations, time- and frequency-domain analysis enables investigation of different types of structures (plate, shells) subject to exterior/interior flow with varying parameters, and attached electrical circuits with respect to the electrical power output generated. Consequently, options for parametric reduced-order modelling of flow-driven energy harvesters will be discussed. [less ▲]

Controlled maintenance of multipotent stem cells is a key component for the development and sustainment of complex multicellular organisms. Various signalling pathways contribute to these processes being either lineage specific or more ubiquitously distributed over different tissue types. Transcription factors are considered as the primary propagators of signals that induce multipotent precursor cells to differentiate into specified cell types. These processes are required to revolve in a constrained and timely manner, with different cell types using variable sets of transcription factors and time scales. microRNA molecules represent an efficient and specific class of regulatory non-coding RNA molecules that efficiently constrain and specify differentiation cascades. New findings suggest that various endogenous non-coding RNA species, whose expression is governed through elaborate transcription factor networks, contribute to the regulation of genomewide transcriptional output. Here, evidence is presented of microRNA and transcription factor connectivity during differentiation cascades. First, these two classes of RNA regulatory molecules are shown to share a common target, lipoprotein lipase, and exert dynamical regulation over its expression during adipogenic differentiation. Second, investigating the genome-wide initial events of adipogenic and osteoblastic lineage commitment cascades reveals extensive transcription in non-protein-coding genomic regions. Further analysis of a select cohort of these non-coding transcripts allows for inferring transcription factor binding dynamics through enhancer-related RNA sequences as well as suggests a more wide-spread role for long non-coding RNA species in regulating transcriptional output. These findings contribute to unravelling basic transcriptional circuitry during cellular transitions. [less ▲]

One way of modelling the wireless channel is in a statistical manner, based on a few parameters describing the characteristics of the environment. In most current wireless channel models, these key parameters are assumed independent between separate links, i.e. on the channels modelling the propagation between one base station and several mobile stations, or one mobile station and several base stations. In practice, dependencies between these wireless channels is expected and as a consequence, system performance evaluations based on models with independent links may be inaccurate. Herein, we consider simulations of a system that depend on the spatial nature of the channel. In particular, we study a system with multi-user scheduling using a single carrier. We investigate the impact of angle spread correlations on multi-user diversity gains using opportunistic scheduling. To facilitate this, a novel method of modelling the angle spread correlations for multi-user system simulations is developed. It is shown that in systems with multiple user scheduling, modelling the angle spread autocorrelation is necessary to obtain reliable system performance results, especially as the number of simultaneous scheduled users increases. In this technical report, we present an application of the structured argumentation methodology to a debate in the foundations of mathematics. We work with ASPIC-END, a recently proposed adaptation of the structured argumentation framework ASPIC+ which can incorporate debates about logical principles, natural deduction style arguments and explanations. We apply this framework to build a preliminary formal model of parts of the debate that mathematicians had about the Axiom of Choice in the early 20th century. Furthermore, we briefly discuss the insight into the strengths and drawbacks of the modeling capacities of ASPIC-END that we have gained from producing this model. [less ▲]

Performing a thorough security risk assessment of an organisation has always been challenging, but with the increased reliance on outsourced and off-site third-party services, i.e., ``cloud services'', combined with internal (legacy) IT-infrastructure and -services, it has become a very difficult and time-consuming task. One of the traditional tools available to ease the burden of performing a security risk assessment and structure security analyses in general is attack trees, a tree-based formalism inspired by fault trees, a well-known formalism used in safety engineering. In this paper we study an extension of traditional attack trees, called attack-defense trees, in which not only the attacker's actions are modelled, but also the defensive actions taken by the attacked party. In this work we use the attack-defense tree as a goal an attacker wants to achieve, and separate the behaviour of the attacker and defender from the attack-defense-tree. We give a fully stochastic timed semantics for the behaviour of the attacker by introducing attacker profiles that choose actions probabilistically and execute these according to a probability density. Lastly, the stochastic semantics provides success probabilitites for individual actions. Furthermore, we show how to introduce costs of attacker actions. Finally, we show how to automatically encode it all with a network of timed automata, an encoding that enables us to apply state-of-the-art model checking tools and techniques to perform fully automated quantitative and qualitative analyses of the modelled system.
