Yet, the contemporary development of dual study programs implies the systematic combination of institutional elements from both subsystems. The rapid expansion of these programs is based on the hybridization of organizational structures – outside of traditional structures – at the nexus of traditional organizational fields of vocational training and higher education. Significant ageing processes are ffecting many regions across Europe and are changing the social and spatial profile of cities. In Trieste, Italy, a joint initiative by the Public Health Agency and the Social Housing Agency has developed a program targeting conditions that allow people to age at home. The outcomes of the program stress the need to redesign and to reorganize the living environment as a way to oppose to the institutionalization of older people in specialised nursing homes. Based on intensive field work, this article presents and discusses the original and innovative inputs that the case study is offering to the Italian and European debate. [less ▲]

In order to analyse and to compare the properties of AlGaN/GaN HEMT on silicon and on sapphire substrates, studies on both layers and device types have been performed. Besides the substantially lower substrate costs compared to SiC, the use of silicon as substrate provides the advantage of a higher thermal conductivity compared to sapphire allowing a more efficient heat removal from the device and thus higher RF power densities. On silicon, up to 900 nm of GaN as well as HEMT structures have been deposited and characterised regarding their structural, optical and electrical properties. HEMT devices with various gate lengths were processed and measured onwafer under continuous and pulsed operation conditions. The properties of the layers and devices on silicon substrates are developing to become comparable to those based on sapphire and silicon carbide. [less ▲]

We report on the preparation and properties of GaN and AlN layers grown by molecular-beam epitaxy on silver metal substrates. X-ray diffraction rocking curves show polycrystalline character of GaN with high preferential GaN 11-22 orientation. An intermetallic phase of Ga3Ag is found at the GaN/Ag interface. On the other hand, AlN layers exhibit a monocrystalline structure with a growth direction of 0002 . Schottky diodes prepared on GaN layers show good rectifying behavior and relatively low leakage current 10−3 A/cm2 . These results indicate that the III-nitride growth on metallic substrates might be used for low-cost and large-area electronic and photonic devices. [less ▲]

AIM: To evaluate the relationships between early growth and regional variations in type 1 diabetes (T1D) incidence in an international cohort of children with familial and genetic risk for T1D. METHODS: Anthropometric indices between birth to 5 yr of age were compared among regions and T1D proband in 2160 children participating in the Trial to Reduce Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus in the Genetically at Risk study. RESULTS: Children in Northern Europe had the highest weight z-score between birth to 12 months of age, while those in Southern Europe and U.S.A. had the lowest weight and length/height z-scores at most time points (p < 0.005 to p < 0.001). Few differences in z-score values for weight, height, and body mass index were found by maternal T1D status. Using International Obesity Task Force criteria, the obesity rates generally increased with age and at 5 yr were highest in males in Northern Europe (6.0%) and in females in Canada (12.8%). However, no statistically significance difference was found by geographic region. In Canada, the obesity rate for female children of mothers with and without T1D differed significantly at 4 and 5 yr (6.0 vs. 0.0% and 21.3 vs. 1.9%, respectively; p < 0.0125) but no differences by maternal T1D status were found in other regions. CONCLUSIONS: There are regional differences in early childhood growth that are consistent with the higher incidence of T1D in Northern Europe and Canada as compared to Southern Europe. Our prospective study from birth will allow evaluation of relationships between growth and the emerging development of autoimmunity and progression to T1D by region in this at-risk population of children [less ▲]

While the direct influence of growth intention on small business growth has been examined in entrepreneurship literature, little research distinguishes the different forms of growth and how they are interrelated. This article draws upon growth intention to examine whether firm size growth is the channel through which growth intention influences sales revenue growth. Results from the analysis of a dataset of 20,472 French new ventures reveal that: (1) growth intention has a positive impact on sales revenue growth; (2) firm size growth has a positive impact on sales revenue growth; and (3) firm size growth mediates the effect of growth intention on sales revenue growth. These findings show that firm size growth is a means to achieve sales revenue growth and not only a finality per se. [less ▲]

In this paper we show that in highly unequal societies, different societal groups may support a rent-seeking dicator serving their interests better than the median voter in a democratic regime. Importantly, it is the stakes of dictator in the economy, in the form of capital ownership, that drives the support of individuals. In particular, in highly societies ruled by a capital-rich dictator endowed with the power to tax and appropriate at will, the elites support dictatorial policies that generate higher growth rates than the ones obtained under democracy. Such support arises despite the total absence of checks and balances on the dictator. [less ▲]
