The study examines the approach of cultural transfer thought to the educational field of universal exhibitions during the second half of the 19th century. The issue of knowledge circulation on education was adressed and, specially, the progress in primary education, made possible by the movement of some actors, as well as their specific goals around this subject. Focuses on analyzing four countries: Japan, France, Germany and the United States and discuss that cultural transfer on primary school was operated by the sections that, in the universal expositions, explored the progresses on pedagogical objects, written documents, designs of school buildings, as well as models adopted by the exchanges and learning experiences from abroad. Finally, verifies the different sociocultural influences that guided the search for models by those nations. [less ▲]

Le cobranding est une pratique habituelle du secteur marchand. Mais lorsque deux musées réalisent ensemble une exposition, peut-on parler de cobranding muséal ? Quelles en seraient les spécificités ? Quels effets peut avoir cette démarche sur la communication ou sur l’exposition ? Notamment, le musée d’accueil s’approprie-t-il simplement l’imaginaire et les valeurs de la marque invitée par un phénomène de « transfert » ? Pour répondre à ces questions, nous étudions trois expositions qui reprennent des objets ou collections de musées dont la marque est internationalement reconnue. L’analyse sémiotique des images de marque du musée d’accueil et du musée invité ainsi que l’analyse sémiopragmatique des expositions montrent l’impact de la présence d’une grande marque internationale sur l’exposition et réciproquement, l’impact de l’exposition sur l’image de marque du musée d’accueil. Plus qu’un simple cobranding, c’est une réécriture impliquant une réénonciation du discours et des valeurs portés par les marques qui est proposée à travers ces expositions. Le processus aboutit à la création de nouveaux espaces symboliques et d’expositions réflexives, avec plusieurs niveaux de lecture. [less ▲]

Despite extensive evidence showing that exposure to specific chemicals can lead to disease, current research approaches and regulatory policies fail to address the chemical complexity of our world. To safeguard current and future generations from the increasing number of chemicals polluting our environment, a systematic and agnostic approach is needed. The \textquotedblleftexposome\textquotedblright concept strives to capture the diversity and range of exposures to synthetic chemicals, dietary constituents, psychosocial stressors, and physical factors, as well as their corresponding biological responses. Technological advances such as high-resolution mass spectrometry and network science have allowed us to take the first steps toward a comprehensive assessment of the exposome. Given the increased recognition of the dominant role that nongenetic factors play in disease, an effort to characterize the exposome at a scale comparable to that of the human genome is warranted. Gender stereotypes in advertisements, magazines, or videogames often appear in the form of sexualized portrayals of women characterized by inappropriately foregrounding female sexuality. Women are shown with highly revealing clothing and engaging in seductive acts. Sexualization may serve as a motivator to adopt congruent gender-related stereotypes in the viewers and, thus, influence beliefs about women in the real world, including negative effects on self-efficacy of women (Behm-Morawitz & Mastro, 2009). In two studies, sexualization had similar adverse effects on participants’ spontaneous judgments of occupational stereotypes and job classification. In a field study (Study 1, N=128), sexualized female game characters were spontaneously associated with jobs of lower prestige (e.g., hairdresser). In contrast, non-sexualized portrayals were linked to jobs of higher status (i.e., physician, educator). This detrimental effect of sexualized portrayal on occupational status was replicated for depictions of male and female fashion models in an online survey (Study 2, N=459). Moreover, this effect was partially mediated by ratings of lower perceived competence for sexualized portrayals of both men and women. The findings of the present studies extend the multifaceted negative effects of sexualization on stereotyping by showing that the resulting spontaneous competence judgments may have detrimental job-related consequences. Aplysina aerophoba is an emerging model marine sponge, with a well-characterized microbial community in terms of diversity and structure. However, little is known about the expressed functional capabilities of its associated microbes. Here, we present the first metaproteomics-based study of the microbiome of A. aerophoba. We found that transport and degradation of halogenated and chloroaromatic compounds are common active processes in the sponge microbiomes. Our data further reveal that the highest number of proteins were affiliated to a sponge-associated Tectomicrobium, presumably from the family Entotheonellaceae, as well as to the well-known symbiont "Candidatus Synechococcus spongiarium", suggesting a high metabolic activity of these two microorganisms in situ. Evidence for nitric oxide (NO) conversion to nitrous oxide was consistently observed for Tectomicrobia across replicates, by production of the NorQ protein. Moreover, we found a potential energy-yielding pathway through CO oxidation by putative Chloroflexi bacteria. Finally, we observed expression of enzymes that may be involved in the transformation of chitin, glycoproteins, glycolipids and glucans into smaller molecules, consistent with glycosyl hydrolases predicted from analyses of the genomes of Poribacteria sponge symbionts. Thus, this study provides crucial links between expressed proteins and specific members of the A. aerophoba microbiome. [less ▲]

Voting is a mechanism of utmost importance to social processes. In this paper, we focus on the strategic aspect of information security in voting procedures. We argue that the notions of receipt-freeness and coercion resistance are underpinned by existence (or nonexistence) of a suitable strategy for some participants of the voting process. In order to back the argument formally, we provide logical ``transcriptions'' of the informal intuitions behind coercion-related properties that can be found in the existing literature. The transcriptions are formulated in the modal game logic ATL*, well known in the area of multi-agent systems. [less ▲]

Pax 1 is a member of the paired-box containing gene family. Expression has previously been observed in the developing sclerotomes and later in the anlagen of the intervertebral discs. Analysis of Pax 1-deficient undulated mice revealed an important role for this gene in the development of the axial skeleton, in which Pax 1 apparently functions as a mediator of notochordal signals during sclerotome differentiation. Here we demonstrate that Pax 1 is also transiently expressed in the developing limb buds. A comparative phenotypic analysis of different undulated alleles shows that this expression is of functional significance. In mice that are mutant for the Pax 1 gene severe developmental abnormalities are found in the pectoral girdle. These include fusions of skeletal elements which would normally remain separate, and failures in the differentiation of blastemas into cartilaginous structures. Although Pax 1 is also expressed in the developing hindlimb buds and Wolffian ridge, no malformations could be detected in the corresponding regions of Pax 1 mutant mice. These findings show that, in addition to its role in the developing vertebral column, Pax 1 has an important function in the development of parts of the appendicular skeleton. [less ▲]

ATP-binding cassette transporter-1 (ABCA1) gene is mutated in patients with familial high-density lipoprotein deficiency (FHD). In order to know the molecular basis for FHD, we characterized three different ABCA1 mutations associated with FHD (G1158A/A255T, C5946T/R1851X, and A5226G/N1611D) with respect to their expression in the passaged fibroblasts from the patients and in the cells transfected with themutated cDNAs. Fibroblasts from the all patients showed markedly decreased cholesterol efflux to apolipoprotein (apo)-Al. In the fibroblasts homozygous for G1158A/A255T, the immunoreactive mass of ABCA1 could not be detected, even when stimulated by 9-cisretinoic acid and 22-R- hydroxycholesterol. In the fibroblasts homozygous for C5946T/R1851X, ABCA1 mRNA was comparable. Because the mutant ABCA1 protein (R1851X) was predicted to lack the epitope for the antibody used, we transfected FLAG-tagged truncated mutant (R1851X/ABCA1-FLAG) cDNA into Cos-7 cells, showing that the mutant protein expression was markedly reduced. The expression of N1611D ABCA1 protein was comparable in both fibroblasts and overexpressing cells, although cholesterol efflux from the cells was markedly reduced. These data indicated that, in the three patients investigated, the abnormalities and dysfunction of ABCA1 occurred at the different levels, providing important information about the expression, regulation, and function of ABCA1. Pax1 and Pax9 represent a subfamily of paired-box-containing genes. In vertebrates, Pax1 and Pax9 transcripts have been found specifically in mesodermal tissues and the pharyngeal endoderm. Pax1 expression in the sclerotomes has been shown to be indispensable for proper formation of the axial skeleton, but expression of Pax1 in the endoderm has not been studied in detail. We have cloned the chick homologue of the murine Pax9 gene. Our results show that transcripts of Pax1 and Pax9 are first detectable in the prospective foregut endoderm of headfold-stage avian embryos. Endodermal expression correlates with the highly proliferative zones of the folding foregut and evaginating pharyngeal pouches. In later stages, Pax1 and Pax9 are expressed in overlapping but distinct patterns within the developing sclerotomes and limb buds. From grafting experiments we conclude that activation of pharyngeal Pax1 and Pax9 expression is an intrinsic property of the endoderm, not requiring midline structures or head mesoderm. In contrast, notochord is required to induce Pax1 in competent sclerotomes. Here we show that in vitro there is a cranio-caudal gradient of inductive capacity in the notochord. This coincides with the graded expression of Pax1 and Pax9 along the cranio-caudal axis in 2- to 3-day-old embryos. Furthermore, paraxial head mesoderm shows no competence to express Pax1. Finally, in vitro we find counteracting influences on notochord signaling by lateral tissues (lateral plate, intermediate mesoderm), leading to an inhibition of Sonic hedgehog (Shh) expression in notochord and floor plate, as well as Pax1 and Pax9 expression in sclerotomes. Taken together, our results demonstrate that different mechanisms regulate expression of Pax1 and Pax9 in foregut and sclerotome, but suggest a common function for both genes in the two tissues that is promoting proliferation and preventing fusion of neighboring blastemas. To study the physiological function of the plasma membrane calmodulin-dependent calcium ATPase (PMCA) in intact cells, L6 myogenic cell lines stably overexpressing the human PMCA isoform 4CI (= human PMCA isoform 4b) were generated. Several independent L6 clones and controls stably transfected with the empty expression vector were analyzed in detail. The resting cytosolic calcium level in hPMCA4CI-overexpressing muscle cells (measured by the Fura-2 method) was significantly reduced by 20-30% compared with controls. This was shown in a cytosolic window of 1322 single cells (p < 0.01). Furthermore, the differentiation process of these cells was remarkably accelerated compared with control myoblasts and parental nontransfected L6 cells as assessed by multinucleated myotube formation and creatine phosphokinase activity elevation. After 4 and 6 days of differentiation, PMCA-overexpressing L6 cells from four independent clones displayed a 3- and 4-fold higher creatine phosphokinase activity compared with controls (n = 5, p < 0.02). These results may extend the concept of the function of the PMCA from simple prevention of calcium overload to an active involvement in intracellular calcium regulation with potentially important consequences for cellular functions. Many plants improve their phosphate (Pi) availability by forming mutualistic associations with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. Pi-repleted plants are much less colonized by AM fungi than Pi-depleted plants. This indicates a link between plant Pi signaling and AM development. MicroRNAs (miR) of the 399 family are systemic Pi-starvation signals important for maintenance of Pi homeostasis in Arabidopsis thaliana and might also qualify as signals regulating AM development in response to Pi availability. MiR399 could either represent the systemic low-Pi signal promoting or required for AM formation or they could act as counter players of systemic Pi-availability signals that suppress AM symbiosis. To test either of these assumptions, we analyzed the miR399 family in the AM-capable plant model Medicago truncatula and could experimentally confirm 10 novel MIR399 genes in this species. Pi-depleted plants showed increased expression of mature miR399 and multiple pri-miR399, and unexpectedly, levels of five of the 15 pri-miR399 species were higher in leaves of mycorrhizal plants than in leaves of nonmycorrhizal plants. Compared with nonmycorrhizal Pi-depleted roots, mycorrhizal roots of Pi-depleted M. truncatula and tobacco plants had increased Pi contents due to symbiotic Pi uptake but displayed higher mature miR399 levels. Expression levels of MtPho2 remained low and PHO2-dependent Pi-stress marker transcript levels remained high in these mycorrhizal roots. Hence, an AM symbiosis-related signal appears to increase miR399 expression and decrease PHO2 activity. MiR399 overexpression in tobacco suggested that miR399 alone is not sufficient to improve mycorrhizal colonization supporting the assumption that, in mycorrhizal roots, increased miR399 are necessary to keep the MtPho2 expression and activity low, which would otherwise increase in response to symbiotic Pi uptake. Aging causes cardiac dysfunction, often leading to heart failure and death. The molecular basis of age-associated changes in cardiac structure and function is largely unknown. The fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, is well-suited to investigate the genetics of cardiac aging. Flies age rapidly over the course of weeks, benefit from many tools to easily manipulate their genome, and their heart has significant genetic and phenotypic similarities to the human heart. Here, we performed a cardiac-specific gene expression study on aging Drosophila and carried out a comparative meta-analysis with published rodent data. Pathway level transcriptome comparisons suggest that age-related, extra-cellular matrix remodeling and alterations in mitochondrial metabolism, protein handling, and contractile functions are conserved between Drosophila and rodent hearts. However, expression of only a few individual genes similarly changed over time between and even within species. We also examined gene expression in single fly hearts and found significant variability as has been reported in rodents. We propose that individuals may arrive at similar cardiac aging phenotypes via dissimilar transcriptional changes, including those in transcription factors and micro-RNAs. Finally, our data suggest the transcription factor Odd-skipped, which is essential for normal heart development, is also a crucial regulator of cardiac aging. [less ▲]

Plastins are members of a family of actin-binding proteins which exhibit a tissue-specific expression pattern. L-plastin, which is specifically expressed in hematopoietic cell lineage, has been proposed to be involved in the control of cell adhesion and motility. This protein is also frequently expressed in cell lines derived from mammary solid tumors and therefore might be involved in cancer invasion and metastasis. We have analysed plastin expression in normal and carcinomatous breast tissues in vivo by immunohistochemistry and immunoblotting approaches using specific plastin isoform antibodies. L-plastin was not detected in normal epithelial cells of the mammary gland whereas a staining of myoepithelial cells was observed in 50% of the cases. In breast carcinomas, a significant immunostaining of malignant epithelial cells was observed in 4 of the 29 cases analysed (13.8%). No correlation between L-plastin expression and tumor size, histological grade or lymph node status was observed. In contrast, L-plastin was found expressed in 4 of the 11 estrogen and progesterone receptors negative tumors (p = 0.039). The potential role of plastin expression in the tumor process is discussed.
