Metal additive manufacturing (AM) is a fast-evolving technology aiming to efficiently produce complex parts while saving resources. Worldwide, active research is being performed to solve the existing challenges of this growing technique. Constant computational advances have enabled multiscale and multiphysics numerical tools that complement the traditional physical experimentation. In this contribution, an advanced discrete--continuous concept is proposed to address the physical phenomena involved during laser powder bed fusion. The concept treats powder as discrete by the extended discrete element method, which predicts the thermodynamic state and phase change for each particle. The fluid surrounding is solved with multiphase computational fluid dynamics techniques to determine momentum, heat, gas and liquid transfer. Thus, results track the positions and thermochemical history of individual particles in conjunction with the prevailing fluid phases' temperature and composition. It is believed that this methodology can be employed to complement experimental research by analysis of the comprehensive results, which can be extracted from it to enable AM processes optimization for parts qualification. This article proposes a methodology for the construction and the calibration of a micro-economic urban land-use model within an extended Cellular Automata (CA) framework. The methodology is applied to processes of residential spread in a part of the commuting periphery of Brussels. The model hypothesizes that households effect on urban development, through their valuation of neighbourhood externalities. A coarse sensitivity analysis is undertaken in order to explore the relationship between household neighbourhood preferences and emerging spatial morphologies. These macro-structures are measured with different indices in order to parameterize the model. [less ▲]

The text explores affect as it unfolded for Master students, co-authoring this article, while engaging with personally meaningful objects, making their first animation movie, and reflecting on this process in the light of new materialist theories. The text is an experiment, emerging from a collective process of living animation making, and intensely discussing, co-thinking and co-writing about this experience. The text attempts to make tangible this complex process, and it aims to share with the reader the potential of animation making as a source of affect, emerging from a temporary assemblage of people and things joint in co-creation and co-agentive collaboration, driven by affective intensities. It aims, furthermore, to recommend animation making as a powerful tool to put in motion learners and learning about materiality, time, space, and our connections with things and people, spurred by affect as a driving force that pushes us towards discovery. The text ultimately seeks to propose an approach towards learning and understanding literacy that takes impetus and grounding from the forces of living, open to the unforeseen and unpredictable, and based in processes of immanence, emergence and movement, rather than in stasis and pre-meditated design. BACKGROUND: Biological networks provide fundamental insights into the functional characterization of genes and their products, the characterization of DNA-protein interactions, the identification of regulatory mechanisms, and other biological tasks. Due to the experimental and biological complexity, their computational exploitation faces many algorithmic challenges. RESULTS: We introduce novel weighted quasi-biclique problems to identify functional modules in biological networks when represented by bipartite graphs. In difference to previous quasi-biclique problems, we include biological interaction levels by using edge-weighted quasi-bicliques. While we prove that our problems are NP-hard, we also describe IP formulations to compute exact solutions for moderately sized networks. CONCLUSIONS: We verify the effectiveness of our IP solutions using both simulation and empirical data. The simulation shows high quasi-biclique recall rates, and the empirical data corroborate the abilities of our weighted quasi-bicliques in extracting features and recovering missing interactions from biological networks. Chaotic dynamical systems have been recently successfully used to replace uniform probability functions in several algorithms in optimization and machine learning. In this work, we propose a study on the use of bifurcation diagrams and first return map in the Rössler system for producing chaotic dynamics. Then, we plan to use these chaotic dynamic for optimization problem. With a bifurcation diagram we can also distinguish the periodic solutions apart from the chaotic solutions. By studying the chaotic solutions, we can then achieve a first return map which is a signature of the dynamical system and thoroughly study the complexity of the latter with a certain set of parameters. As a result, the partition in the bifurcation diagram is provided. From the first return maps, we are able to confirm the complexity of the dynamics in those partitions along with the transitions between them. [less ▲]

In light of globalization and increased cultural diversity, the question of cultural identity becomes particularly salient in many societies today. Whereas most studies have concentrated on cultural identity of immigrants, less is known about the identity constructions of non-immigrants and receiving country nationals living in a multicultural setting. The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg with a foreign population of 48% provides an excellent example case here. The present study examined the cultural identity of two generations of native Luxembourgers, drawing on a content analysis of qualitative interviews with N = 18 participants belonging to nine family dyads, each composed of one (young) adult child and one parent. As Luxembourg’s cultural diversity has increased continuously in the last decades, we focussed here on similarities and differences between (young) adults and their parents in order to find out in how far age (i.e., different points in the individual life span) or generation (i.e., growing up in different times and historical contexts) might be highlighted in their cultural identity constructions. Five main domains pertaining to Luxembourger’s cultural identity were found through qualitative content analysis: ‘the Luxembourgish language’, ‘Belongingness to Luxembourg and the love for Luxembourg as a homeland’, ‘Europeanization and multiculturalism in Luxembourg’, ‘Representing Luxembourg as a native in international contexts’ and ‘Luxembourgish traditions and history’. While the older generation focused more on the feeling of belongingness to their home country, the younger generation made more specific links to Europe and multiculturalism. Practical and theoretical implications are discussed. [less ▲]
