OBJECTIVES: The aims of the study were to estimate the prevalence of diabetes in Luxembourg in 2002, to compare it to the prevalence reported in 1991 and to evaluate if prescription attitudes have changed since 1991. METHODS: The prevalence of diabetes was estimated using the drug sales data. The key parameters, total amount of antidiabetic drugs sold in one year and the average daily dose or Prescribed Daily Dose (PDD), have been obtained from the National Social Security Organization and by a standardized questionnaire sent to all general practitioners and all internists and endocrinologists of the country. RESULTS: The PDD was calculated on 2,402 questionnaires on individual diabetic patients. By this mean, the proportion of patients only treated with appropriate diet could also be obtained. Compared to 1991, the total amount of antidiabetic drugs showed a four-fold increase in biguanides tablet prescriptions. A high percentage of combined treatments was found. The prevalence of diabetes in Luxembourg was found to be 3.05% of the total population. CONCLUSIONS: Compared to the status in 1991, prevalence of diabetes increased by 63%, which seems mainly due to type 2 diabetic patients as orally-treated diabetic patients almost doubled (2.11% vs 1.16%). A substantial change in prescriptions for diabetes has occurred, suggesting a positive influence of studies like the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS). [less ▲]

[less ▲]

The domain structure of uniaxial ferroelectric lithium niobate single crystals is investigated using Raman spectroscopy mapping. The influence of doping with magnesium and poling at room temperature is studied by analysing frequency shifts at domain walls and their variations with dopant concentration and annealing conditions. It is shown that defects are stabilized at domain walls and that changes in the defect structures with Mg concentration can be probed by the shift of Raman modes. We show that the signatures of polar defects in the bulk and at the domain walls differ. (C) 2016 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH Co. KGaA, Weinheim [less ▲]

Kimberly Young's initial work on Internet addiction (IA) was pioneering and her early writings on the topic inspired many others to carry out research in the area. Young's (2015) recent paper on the 'evolution of Internet addiction' featured very little European research, and did not consider the main international evidence that has contributed to our current knowledge about the conceptualization, epidemiology, etiology, and course of Internet-related disorders. This short commentary paper elaborates on important literature omitted by Young that the present authors believe may be of use to researchers. We also address statements made in Young's (2015) commentary that are incorrect (and therefore misleading) and not systematically substantiated by empirical evidence. [less ▲]

In a recent paper, [Cabral, L. M. B. and J. Mata, 2003, American Economic Review, 93, 1075–1090] using Portuguese manufacturing data have shown for the first time that the plant size distribution is significantly right-skewed at the early part of the life cycle and then changes to become more log-normal. Using a similar proxy for plant age we compare this stylised fact for both Luxembourg manufacturing and services. Use of plants’ true age, however, reveals that the size distribution reverses back towards right-skewness for very old plants. We confirm the finding that the right-skewness is likely driven by financial constraints. Copyright Springer 2006 [less ▲]

We present new general methods to obtain shift representation of evolution semigroups defined on Banach spaces. We introduce the notion of time operator associated with a generalized shift on a Banach space and give some conditions under which time operators can be defined on an arbitrary Banach space. We also tackle the problem of scaling of time operators and obtain a general result about the existence of time operators on Banach spaces satisfying some geometric conditions. The last part of the paper contains some examples of explicit constructions of time operators on function spaces. [less ▲]

An evolving Riemannian manifold (M,g_t)_{t\in I} consists of a smooth d-dimensional manifold M, equipped with a geometric flow g_t of complete Riemannian metrics, parametrized by I=(-\infty,T). Given an additional C^{1,1} family of vector fields (Z_t)_{t\in I} on M. We study the family of operators L_t=\Delta_t +Z_t where \Delta_t denotes the Laplacian with respect to the metric g_t. We first give sufficient conditions, in terms of space-time Lyapunov functions, for non-explosion of the diffusion generated by L_t, and for existence of evolution systems of probability measures associated to it. Coupling methods are used to establish uniqueness of the evolution systems under suitable curvature conditions. Adopting such a unique system of probability measures as reference measures, we characterize supercontractivity, hypercontractivity and ultraboundedness of the corresponding time-inhomogeneous semigroup. To this end, gradient estimates and a family of (super-)logarithmic Sobolev inequalities are established. [less ▲]
