In the construction of façades, connections between glass and glass as well as other materials with varying properties, e.g. metals, are currently designed with, inter alia, the application of adhesives. The related analytical evaluation of the load bearing characteristics of these kinds of assemblies requires the correct determination of the adhesives’ properties; knowledge in this field is still incomplete. Therefore an extensive test campaign on the load bearing and displacement behaviour of common structural silicone and UV-acrylic was carried out with the aim, to identify appropriate models to describe their properties under quasi-static loading and for their implementation in numerical analyses. The test program, comparisons between the different adhesive materials and a summarised outcome will be presented in this paper. [less ▲]

Self-heating effects and temperature rise in AlGaN/GaN HEMTs grown on silicon and sapphire substrates are studied, exploiting transistor dc characterization methods. A negative differential output resistance is observed for high dissipated power levels. An analytical formula for a source-drain current drop as a function of parasitic source resistance and threshold voltage changes is proposed to explain this behavior. The transistor source resistance and threshold voltage is determined experimentally at different elevated temperatures to construct channel temperature versus dissipated power transfer characteristic. It is found that the HEMT channel temperature increases rapidly with dissipated power and at 6 W/mm reaches values of 320 C for sapphire and 95 C for silicon substrate, respectively. [less ▲]

We use Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) and capacitance coupling (dC/dz) to study the electrical properties of graphene oxide (GO). We propose using the dC/dz signal to probe the high frequency dielectric constant of mono- and few-layer GO. Our measurements suggest that the dynamic dielectric constant of GO is on the order of εGO ? 3.0 ε0, in the high frequency limit, and independent of the number of GO layers. The measurements are performed at a humidity controlled environment (5 of humidity). The effects of increasing humidity on both the dC/dz and KPFM measurements are analyzed. [less ▲]

The hydraulic conductivity, which is among other parameters, needed to predict time-dependant settlement, can be estimated using a piezocone dissipation test. This test is commonly used together with cone penetration tests (CPTs), soil borings and laboratory tests in foundation site investigations. The piezocone dissipation test is based on the fact that the rate of decay of the large excess pore water pressures generated during penetration of the piezocone through saturated clays and silts depends on the hydraulic conductivity of the material. However, interpretation of the dissipation curve is often problematic as existing methods of analysis assume a continuous decrease of pore pressure with time, whereas actual dissipation curves often exhibit non-standard behavior, the interpretation of which is more complex. This paper presents a new method of interpretation that can be used to estimate the hydraulic conductivity regardless of the shape of the dissipation curve. Examples of results using the new analysis method are compared with results obtained using laboratory oedometer testing. [less ▲]

Determination of Slip Factor between CNC-Cut Serrated Surfaces of S355J2 Grade Steel Plates by Taygun Fırat Yolaçan and Markus SchäferStructural joint configurations realized with serrated steel surfaces have started to be used in the construction fields to assemble the primary and the secondary structural members of civil engineering structures. The main advantages of these joint configurations rely on their flexibility to accommodate construction tolerances and their slip-resistant load-bearing mechanism against dynamic loading conditions. Therefore, it is important to reliably establish the characteristic value of the friction coefficient or in other words the slip factor between the serrated steel surfaces to design reliable slip-resistant connections. In this study, the characteristic slip factor between the CNC-cut serrated surfaces prepared from S355J2 grade steel plates is determined to investigate the impact of the CNC-cutting procedure on the slip-resistant load-bearing behaviour of steel-to-steel interfaces. Five experimental tests were performed according to EN1090-2, Annex G. The results are presented as the load-slip curves, variation of the bolt pre-tension load level, nominal and actual slip factors for the tested configuration of the CNC-cut serrated steel-to-steel interface [less ▲]

The angle of repose is a quantity that delivers direct information about the flowability of granular material. It is therefore desirable to have a reliable experimental method for its determination. Based on the well-established funnel method with continuous mass flow, an extension is introduced which allows increasing the precision and reproducibility of the angle of repose measurements. A modified experimental setup is presented which exploits asymmetries in the alignment of the mechanical setup to gain more precision in the determination of the angle of repose. This experimental setup is combined with an evaluation method based on automated image analysis. The first results for a set of metal powders are presented. [less ▲]

Adhesive point-fixings are being used more frequently because of their numerous advantages compared to traditional bolted connections, such as a better load introduction, the absence of drilling holes in the glass and increased thermal performances. For the analysis of such fixings the use of finite element analyses is necessary. The adhesive properties in these finite element analyses are presented on the basis of stress-strain curves. The determination of the stress-strain curves is done by experimental testing on bulk material of the adhesive. With these tests the displacement rate reliance can also be studied. In this contribution, the fabrication and testing of test samples is described for two selected adhesives. The experimental data show that the selected adhesives behave stiffer under tension as the displacement rate is decreased. [less ▲]

Hydrogels are increasingly used as a surrogate extracellular matrix in three-dimensional cell culture systems, including microfluidic cell culture. Matrigel is a hydrogel of natural origin widely used in cell culture, particularly in the culture of stem cell-derived cell lines. The use of Matrigel as a surrogate extracellular matrix in microfluidic systems is challenging due to its biochemical, biophysical, and biomechanical properties. Therefore, understanding and characterising these properties is a prerequisite for optimal use of Matrigel in microfluidic systems. We used rheological measurements and particle image velocimetry to characterise the fluid flow dynamics of liquefied Matrigel during loading into a three-dimensional microfluidic cell culture device. Using fluorescence microscopy and fluorescent beads for particle image velocimetry measurements (velocity profiles) in combination with classical rheological measurements of Matrigel (viscosity versus shear rate), we characterised the shear rates experienced by cells in a microfluidic device for three-dimensional cell culture. This study provides a better understanding of the mechanical stress experienced by cells, during seeding of a mixture of hydrogel and cells, into three-dimensional microfluidic cell culture devices.
