Computer vision has witnessed several advances in recent years, with unprecedented performance provided by deep representation learning research. Image formats thus appear attractive to other fields such as malware detection, where deep learning on images alleviates the need for comprehensively hand-crafted features generalising to different malware variants. We postulate that this research direction could become the next frontier in Android malware detection, and therefore requires a clear roadmap to ensure that new approaches indeed bring novel contributions. We contribute with a first building block by developing and assessing a baseline pipeline for image-based malware detection with straightforward steps. We propose DexRay, which converts the bytecode of the app DEX files into grey-scale “vector” images and feeds them to a 1-dimensional Convolutional Neural Network model. We view DexRay as foundational due to the exceedingly basic nature of the design choices, allowing to infer what could be a minimal performance that can be obtained with image-based learning in malware detection. The performance of DexRay evaluated on over 158k apps demonstrates that, while simple, our approach is effective with a high detection rate(F1-score= 0.96). Finally, we investigate the impact of time decay and image-resizing on the performance of DexRay and assess its resilience to obfuscation. This work-in-progress paper contributes to the domain of Deep Learning based Malware detection by providing a sound, simple, yet effective approach (with available artefacts) that can be the basis to scope the many profound questions that will need to be investigated to fully develop this domain. DFTB+ is a versatile community developed open source software package offering fast and efficient methods for carrying out atomistic quantum mechanical simulations. By implementing various methods approximating density functional theory (DFT), such as the density functional based tight binding (DFTB) and the extended tight binding method, it enables simulations of large systems and long timescales with reasonable accuracy while being considerably faster for typical simulations than the respective ab initio methods. Based on the DFTB framework, it additionally offers approximated versions of various DFT extensions including hybrid functionals, time dependent formalism for treating excited systems, electron transport using non-equilibrium Green’s functions, and many more. DFTB+ can be used as a user-friendly standalone application in addition to being embedded into other software packages as a library or acting as a calculation-server accessed by socket communication. We give an overview of the recently developed capabilities of the DFTB+ code, demonstrating with a few use case examples, discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the various features, and also discuss on-going developments and possible future perspectives. This article discusses the intersection of Jewish Studies and Digital Humanities (DH). It investigates the specific characteristics of Jewish Studies, in terms of both subject matter and sources, and reflects on how digital approaches can be harnessed to address them. What common digital challenges do Jewish Studies scholars face, if these can indeed be defined, and in what ways can the field benefit from developments in the area of DH? Even though Jewish Studies is arguably an umbrella term (as is DH), this article suggests that the field of Jewish Studies has several characteristics that are broadly shared by all the (sub-)disciplines that it incorporates. Conceptualising the encounter between Jewish Studies and DH is thus first and foremost about translating these characteristics into specific digital challenges. As will be argued, the key task is information retrieval and analysis from dispersed, multilingual and multiscriptual sources. [less ▲]

Im aktuellen Theoriediskurs wird jedoch häufiger darauf hingewiesen, dass eine Beschränkung der Interkulturalitätsforschung auf rezente Globalisierungsphänomene zu kurz gegriffen ist und die Notwendigkeit einer Historisierung besteht. In diesem Sinne unternimmt der Band einen Vorstoß zur Erweiterung des Forschungsfeldes im Zeichen des Diachron-Geschichtlichen und erreicht damit eine signifikante Komplexitätssteigerung des häufig zu undifferenziert gedachten Interkulturalitätsbegriffs.
