We apply spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) to identify secondary phases in Cu2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) absorbers and to investigate the optical properties of CZTSe. A detailed optical model is used to extract the optical parameters, such as refractive index and extinction coefficient in order to extrapolate the band gap values of CZTSe samples, and to obtain information about the presence of secondary phases at the front and back sides of the samples. We show that SE can be used as a non-destructive method for detection of the secondary phases ZnSe and MoSe2 and to extrapolate the band gap values of CZTSe phase. We report on the optical and magneto-optical response of hybrid plasmonic lattices that consist of pure nickel and gold nanoparticles in a checkerboard arrangement. Diffractive far-field coupling between the individual emitters of the lattices results in the excitation of two orthogonal surface lattice resonance modes. Local analyses of the radiation fields indicate that both the nickel and gold nanoparticles contribute to these collective resonances and, thereby, to the magneto-optical activity of the hybrid arrays. The strong effect of noble metal nanoparticles on the magneto-optical response of hybrid lattices opens up new avenues for the realization of sensitive and tunable magneto-plasmonic nanostructures. We use polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy to assess the crystal quality of epitaxial kesterite layers. It is demonstrated for the example of epitaxial Cu2ZnSnSe4 layers on GaAs(001) that ``standing'' and ``lying'' kesterite unit cell orientations (c'-axis parallel / perpendicular to the growth direction) can be distinguished by the application of Raman tensor analysis. From the appearance of characteristic intensity oscillations when the sample is rotated one can distinguish polycrystalline and epitaxial layers. The method can be transferred to kesterite layers oriented in any crystal direction and can shed light on the growth of such layers in general. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America [less ▲]

An approach to compute the polarizability tensor of magnetic nanoparticles having general ellipsoidal shape is presented. We find a surprisingly excellent quantitative agreement between calculated and experimental magneto-optical spectra measured in the polar Kerr configuration from nickel nanodisks of large size (exceeding 100 nm) with circular and elliptical shape. In spite of its approximations and simplicity, the formalism presented here captures the essential physics of the interplay between magneto-optical activity and the plasmonic resonance of the individual particle. The results highlight the key role of the dynamic depolarization effects to account for the magneto-optical properties of plasmonic nanostructures. [less ▲]
