The verification of complex software systems often requires to check quantitative properties that rely on aggregation operators (e.g., the average response time of a service). One way to ease the specification of these properties is to use property specification patterns, such as the ones for “service provisioning”, previously proposed in the literature. In this paper we focus on the problem of performing offline trace checking of temporal properties containing aggregation operators. We first present TemPsy-AG, an extension of TemPsy—an existing pattern-based language for the specification of temporal properties—to support service provisioning patterns that use aggregation operators. We then extend an existing model-driven procedure for trace checking, to verify properties expressed in TemPsy-AG. The trace checking procedure relies on the efficient mapping of temporal properties written in TemPsy-AG into OCL constraints on a meta-model of execution traces. We have implemented this procedure in the TemPsy-Check-AG tool and evaluated its performance: our approach scales linearly with respect to the length of the input trace and can deal with much larger traces than a state-of-the-art tool. In Model Driven Engineering (Mde), models are first-class citizens, and model transformation is Mde's "heart and soul". Since model transformations are executed for a family of (conforming) models, their validity becomes a crucial issue. This paper proposes to explore the question of the formal verification of model transformation properties through a tridimensional approach: the transformation involved, the properties of interest addressed, and the formal verification techniques used to establish the properties. This work is intended for a double audience. For newcomers, it provides a tutorial introduction to the field of formal verification of model transformations. For readers more familiar with formal methods and model transformations, it proposes a literature review (although not systematic) of the contributions of the field. Overall, this work allows to better understand the evolution, trends and current practice in the domain of model transformation verification. This work opens an interesting research line for building an engineering of model transformation verification guided by the notion of model transformation intent. [less ▲]

In this paper we start from the consideration that high level interaction between entities like web services has very different properties with respect to the interaction between objects at the lower level of programming languages in the object oriented paradigm. In particular, web services, for security, usability and user adaptability reasons, offer different operations to different users by means of access control and keep track of the state of the interaction with each user by means of sessions. The current vision in object orientation, instead, considers attributes and operations of objects as being objective and independent from the interaction with another object, which is sessionless. To introduce these features in the interaction between objects directly in object oriented programming languages, we take inspiration from how access control is regulated by means of roles. Roles allow objects to offer different operations depending on the type of the role, of the type and identity of the player of the role, and to define session-aware interaction. We start from a definition of roles given in ontologies and knowledge representation and we discuss how this definition of roles can be introduced in Java, building our language powerJava [less ▲]
