Additive manufacturing (AM) is expected to facilitate local manufacturing in shorter, less complex supply chains and, thus, impact the demand for traditional logistics services. With increasing dissemination, AM confronts logistics service providers (LSPs) with the question of how they should adapt their business model to the threats and opportunities that come with the emerging digital technologies. We structure the AM activities of LSPs and develop a deep understanding of their resulting business model dynamics. For this exploratory purpose, this study develops a taxonomy and performs a cluster analysis to present six clusters of how LSPs approach AM today. The six profiles include LSPs that reactively monitor AM or, in contrast, proactively leverage AM for their internal operations and the development of new services for their external customers. Among them, four profiles entail fundamental changes to the traditional business models of LSPs. We find that these LSPs oftentimes continue to rely on their traditional “analog” service strengths to offer integrated service bundles of AM and logistics solutions. They bridge their lack of specific resources by strategic alliances with AM experts. Only a few LSPs have started severing ties to their traditional businesses to develop digitally dominated, platform-based AM services that require different resources. Overall, the comprehensive picture of AM activities enables us to contribute to the knowledge of how LSPs navigate in the digital age and to the nexus of business model dynamics and emerging technologies. We propose a set of propositions and support practitioners in analyzing and designing AM activities. [less ▲]

This paper analyzes the value of different sources of installed base information for spare part demand forecasting and inventory control. The installed base is defined as the set of products (or machines) in use where the part is installed. Information on the number of products still in use, the age of the products, the age of their parts, as well as the part reliability may indicate when a part will fail and trigger a demand for a new spare part. The current literature is unclear which of this installed base information adds most value – and should thus be collected – for inventory control purposes. For this reason, we evaluate the inventory performance of eight methods that include different sets of installed base information in their demand forecasts. Using a comparative simulation study we identify that knowing the size of the active installed base is most valuable, especially when the installed base changes over time. We also find that when a failure-based prediction model is used, it is important to work with the part age itself, rather than the machine age. When one is not able to collect information on the part age, a logistic regression on the machine age might be a valuable alternative to a failure-based prediction model. Our findings may support the prioritization of data collection for spare part demand forecasting and inventory control. [less ▲]

We focus on the inventory management of critical spare parts that are used for service maintenance. These parts are commonly characterised by a large variety, an intermittent demand pattern and oftentimes a high shortage cost. Specialized service parts models focus on improving the availability of parts whilst limiting the investment in inventories. We develop a method to forecast the demand of these spare parts by linking it to the service maintenance policy. The demand of these parts originates from the maintenance activities that require their use, and is thus related to the number of machines in the field that make use of this part (known as the active installed base), in combination with the part's failure behaviour and the maintenance plan. We use this information to predict future demand. By tracking the active installed base and estimating the part failure behaviour, we provide a forecast of the distribution of the future spare parts demand during the upcoming lead time. This forecast is in turn used to manage inventories using a base-stock policy. Through a simulation experiment, we show that our method has the potential to improve the inventory-service trade-off, i.e., it can achieve a certain cycle service level with lower inventory levels compared to the traditional forecasting techniques for intermittent spare part demand. The magnitude of the improvement increases for spare parts that have a large installed base and for parts with longer replenishment lead times. [less ▲]

We develop a model to determine the optimal structure and size of a rail car fleet at a chemical company under uncertainty in demand and travel times as well as substitution between rail car types. First, we formulate an MILP model that accounts for the substitution relations between the types and minimizes the total direct rail car cost under given rail car availability constraints and a predefined maximum number of types. Second, based on the fleet structure obtained by the MILP model, the fleet size is computed by using an approximation from inventory theory that considers the existing uncertainties. Compared to the current approach of the rail car fleet management team, the model produces a reduction in safety stock of 120 rail cars and thus direct cost savings of 8% as well as further indirect cost savings due to a smaller number of rail car types, which reduces the switching effort of the rail cars on the storage tracks. We analyze a single-product, periodic-review, stochastic demand inventory model with backorders and two supply options, a regular and a more expensive expedited one, with deterministic, offsetting lead times. Since the optimal policy for such a problem is generally unknown, several simpler policies have been proposed in the literature, e.g., the single-index (SIP), dual-index (DIP), or constant-order policy (COP). In previous research the DIP has been found to perform closely to the optimal policy in specific numerical settings. The COP, on the other hand, is very appealing from a practical point of view. We explore the relative cost performance of these two policies in a numerical study to gain insights into appropriate policy choices. We find that in settings, where dual sourcing is most valuable, the simpler COP delivers satisfactory results, sometimes even better ones than the DIP, and therefore represents a legitimate policy alternative for practical situations.
