The Banque Générale du Luxembourg (BGL), established in 1919, is one of Luxembourg’s iconic financial institutions. Drawing on the bank’s private archives, this article explores the many architectural changes made to the BGL headquarters over the years, ranging from extensions and renovations to new building projects. Throughout the bank’s history – and especially from its establishment until the late 1980s –, the buildings that housed its head office in the centre of Luxembourg City went through multiple transformations. The architectural history of the headquarters is not only intricately linked with the history of the bank and the image it sought to portray; it is also a key chapter in the growth of the Luxembourg financial centre and reflects the wider urban development of Luxembourg City. While the first head office was still characterised by classical architectural features, its transformation towards a more functional, vertical aesthetic in the 1960s had a lasting impact on the city centre landscape: the BGL was one of the first financial institutions to engage in a radical overhaul of its headquarters on boulevard Royal. Since the so-called Letter of Liberty of 1244, the burghers of Luxembourg had the duty to defend their town and to go to war with their lord. This contribution examines, based predominantly on medieval account books, what concrete tasks this duty entailed. It distinguishes between the construction and maintenance of the city walls, the required services asked of the village dwellers, the sentry duty of the inhabitants, personal arms of the denizens and heavy weaponry of the municipality, concrete war preparations and actual military campaigns. The assessment of empirical historical evidence allows not only to calculate the costs of these military ventures but also to provide a rather detailed evaluation of the technological state of development of the artillery in the 14th to 15th century. The Marienthal homiliarium-legendarium represents a unique example of a Latin hagiographical collection from the early period of the Ordo fratrum Praedicatorum originating from a nunnery. In addition, it is a rare example of a 'traditional' Dominican hagiographical collection unlike the abbreviated collections written during the 13th century by members of the Dominican Order, which redefined the landscape of Latin hagiographical edition. Based on a detailed codicological study as well as an analysis of the texts contained in the legendarium section of the factice codex, this article questions the context of production and use of the book object. A key point is whether the legendarium was the product of a Dominican enterprise or not. The detailed study of the literary tradition of several of the texts also sheds light on the provenance of the collection. As a book belonging to a young female community of the Order, the homiliarium-legendarium also raises questions about the history of the conventual library and of its concrete use by the nuns. Like other manuscripts, it could be linked to the prioress Yolanda of Vianden whose life story is not unlike that of the saints in the legendarium. [less ▲]

The work of editing medieval documents is full of pitfalls. Among the greatest difficulties is undoubtedly that of providing a critical edition of the copy of a document contained in a cartulary. What is the level of reliability of this copy with respect to its archetype? What is the role of the editor of the cartulary as mediator between the archetype and the copy? What should be done in the presence of an abbreviated copy of a lost archetype? In this paper, we offer a case study illustrating these issues, by focussing on a vidimus issued by Pierre de Vianden and Conon de Reuland at the end of the 1260s-early 1270s reporting an agreement between Count Philippe I of Vianden and Henri V of Luxembourg. Improperly dated and misinterpreted by researchers in the course of the 20th century, this document is the object of a new analysis which places it in a totally different historical perspective.
