With the help of conversation analysis and membership categorization analysis, an examination is presented of how and for what practical purposes gendered categorizations are interactively produced and become relevant in practices of talk-in-interaction in institutional settings. Focusing on the analysis of the practical purposes of deploying gendered categorizations can show that there are institutional and practical challenges or dilemmas that are dealt with by using these categorizations. Methodologically, it is argued, that the analysis of the practical purposes offers insights how and why gender is interactively reproduced in institutional talk. What it means that gender is interactively relevant and which context has to be taken into consideration will be elaborated on. It will be shown that gender inequality can be reproduced as a consequence of talk, although gender is not evidently and unambiguously relevant in an interaction. The data presented are in the form of transcripts of institutional talk between the so- called "personal advisors" and "customers" in German job centers in the division for young people under 25. This paper explores ethical and methodological implications of collaborative research, and we discuss our examination of ways to work towards participatory, ethical relationships in research. Our core concerns pertain to the experiential, lived and qualitative relations within emergent research communities. Questions that have guided us include: What does ‘we’ mean in research practice? How do we become a community of researchers? What forms of relations are shaped in the continuous process of inquiry? Whose interests are served? How can a community of researchers and their participants, formed and sustained by reciprocal, ethical relations, of trust, shared knowledges, curiosity and friendship, emerge? Key to approaching these is examining the contingent epistemological goals of research. We discuss four essential elements in the ethical qualities of research as a community of practice that stand out for "us." [less ▲]

This collected edition includes contributions to "Educational Research in the Context of Ethnography and Biography," which arise from research workshops at the University of Kassel, Germany. In putting together this review of 14 articles the editors' purpose was first to demonstrate the variety of ethnographic approaches to educational research, and second to contribute to the methodological debate about ethnography in educational science by reflecting the methods of the different research activities. Unfortunately the individual articles are highly disparate and have sometimes only a vague relationship to ethnography or education. The editors fail to systematically demarcate topics or make use of the fruits of this heterogeneity, so the compilation falls short of what it might have achieved. In spite of some very interesting and innovative individual articles the book on the whole suggests an arbitrary use of the term "ethnography." [less ▲]

In this article I discuss the potentials of discourse theory for biographical research from a social constructivist perspective. The connection between discourse theory and biographical research is becoming increasingly important in qualitative research. Despite this increasing importance, there are few guidelines explaining how discourses or parts of discourses can be reconstructed in biographical narratives and how the complex relation of temporality and narration can be taken into consideration. This contribution focuses on these issues and suggests the analysis of metaphors as a possible means to reconstruct discourses or parts of them in biographical narratives. Two examples will illustrate this perspective. [less ▲]
