Who does not know the farm worker for the asparagus harvest, the emigrated German retirees in Spanish holiday villages or the Italian pizzerias in small villages? Nevertheless, nearly nobody connects these phenomena with international migration. This article delivers insight into the variety of migration phenomena in rural European areas. Therefore, special regional case studies are presented. In the Irish village Gort one third of the population comes from Brazil working in the meat-processing industries. In the village Perl in the German federal state Saarland, many Luxembourgians live due to the close border and the cheap real estate prices (so called “a-typical frontier workers”). In the Slovenian rural region of Pomurska, British people have bought houses during the last years (so called “amenity migration”) as they have discovered the financial and countryside advantages of the region.
