For a finite-type surface S, we study a preferred basis for the commutative algebra C[XSL3(C)(S)] of regular functions on the SL3(C)-character variety, introduced by Sikora and Westbury. These basis elements come from the trace functions associated to certain tri-valent graphs embedded in the surface S. We show that this basis can be naturally indexed by positive integer coordinates, defined by Knutson-Tao rhombus inequalities. These coordinates are related, by the geometric theory of Fock and Goncharov, to the tropical points at infinity of the dual version of the character variety. [less ▲]

Road extraction plays a significant role in production of high definition maps (HD maps). This paper presents a novel boundary-enhanced supervoxel segmentation method for extracting road edge contours from MLS point clouds. The proposed method first leverages normal feature judgment to obtain 3D point clouds global geometric information, then clusters points according to an existing method with global geometric information to enhance the boundaries. Finally, it utilizes the neighbor spatial distance metric to extract the contours and drop out existing outliers. The proposed method is tested on two datasets acquired by a RIEGL VMX-450 MLS system that contain the major point cloud scenes with different types of road boundaries. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method provides a promising solution for extracting contours efficiently and completely. Results show that the precision values are 1.5 times higher and approximately equal than the other two existing methods when the recall value is 0 for both tested two road datasets. [less ▲]

We study the class of symmetric $n$-ary bands. These are $n$-ary semigroups $(X,F)$ such that $F$ is invariant under the action of permutations and idempotent, i.e., satisfies $F(x,\ldots,x)=x$ for all $x\in X$. We first provide a structure theorem for these symmetric $n$-ary bands that extends the classical (strong) semilattice decomposition of certain classes of bands. We introduce the concept of strong $n$-ary semilattice of $n$-ary semigroups and we show that the symmetric $n$-ary bands are exactly the strong $n$-ary semilattices of $n$-ary extensions of Abelian groups whose exponents divide $n-1$. Finally, we use the structure theorem to obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for a symmetric $n$-ary band to be reducible to a semigroup. [less ▲]

In the frame of the European Physical Activity Label for Schools (Eu-PALS, 2020a) project diverse indicators of physical activity, physical education and sport in different European schools have been analysed. As a starting point, this paper is presenting the chosen indicators and comparing them to an already existing physical activity label for schools in Luxembourg. The choice of the quality criteria in the Eu-PALS project, which may lead to the awarding of the label, are further discussed by demonstrating the results of a pilot study at four schools in Luxembourg. This national pilot study shows not only to the participating schools in which areas they might need to improve their activities, but allows also more generally to evaluate the indicators and possibly to improve the choice. Finally, with regard to the topic of the CEREPS Conference 2019 in Prague – “Quality criteria and outcome standards for Physical Education and School Sport” – in the frame of which this study has been presented, it is also discussed whether the project contributes to make criteria and outcome standards of physical education and school sport in Europe visible and comparable. This study examined the buffering effect of perceived social support on the association between bullying involvement and suicidal ideation. Cultural differences between Luxembourgish and Indian students were explored as well. The Olweus Bullying Questionnaire, the Participant Role Behaviour Questionnaire, and the Child and Adolescent Social Support Scale were used. Data of 483 high school students aged between 12 and 18 years were analysed using hierarchical regression. Significant cultural differences between Luxembourg and India in bullying involvement, perceived social support and suicidal ideation occurred. Importantly, it was found that perceived social support did not play a buffering role, but instead highly perceived social support from a close friend intensified the relationship between high cyber- and relational victimization and suicidal ideation. In 2015, Chou and Orlandi presented an oblivious transfer protocol that already drew a lot of attention both from theorists and practitioners due to its extreme simplicity and high efficiency. Chou and Orlandi claimed that their protocol is universally composable secure (UC-secure) in the random oracle model under dynamic corruptions. UC-security is a very strong security guarantee that assures that, not only the protocol in itself is secure, but can be also used safely in larger protocols. Unfortunately, in this work we point out a flaw in their security proof for the case of a corrupt sender. In more detail, we define a decisional problem and we prove that, if a correct security proof for the Chou and Orlandi's protocol is provided, then this problem can be solved correctly with overwhelming probability. Therefore, the protocol of Chou and Orlandi cannot be instantiated securely with groups for which our decisional problem cannot be solved correctly with overwhelming probability. Consequently, the protocol of Chou and Orlandi cannot be instantiated with {\em all} groups $\G$ in which the CDH problem is intractable, but only with groups in which both the CDH problem is intractable and our decisional problem can be solved with overwhelming probability. After the appearance of our work, Chou and Orlandi acknowledged the problems we pointed out in their security proof and subsequent works showed additional issues, removing the claims of UC security of their protocol. Many adolescents struggle with adequately assessing their weight-status, often leading to unnecessary weight-related interventions or preventing necessary ones. The prevalence of weight-status over- and underestimation differs considerably cross-nationally, suggesting that individual weight-status assessment is informed by cross-nationally differing standards of evaluation. For adolescents with a migration background, this brings up the possibility of a simultaneous influence of origin- and receiving country standards. The current study examines the magnitude of both influences using data from the 2014 Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children study. The cross-national design of the study enabled us to aggregate weight-evaluation standards for 41, primarily European, countries. Subsequently, we identified a sample of 8 124 adolescents with a migration background whose origin as well as receiving country participated in the study. Among those adolescents, we assessed the effects of origin and receiving country weight-evaluation standards using cross-classified multilevel regression analyses. Descriptive analyses revealed considerable differences in weight-evaluation standards between the countries. Regression analyses showed that both origin- and receiving country weight-evaluation standards were significantly associated cross-sectionally with weight-status assessment among the immigrant adolescents, with a stronger impact of receiving country standards. Results illustrate the context-sensitivity of adolescent weight-status assessment and reinforce the theoretical notion that immigrant adolescent development is not only informed by factors pertaining to their receiving country but also, albeit to a lesser extent, by those pertaining to their origin country. A magnetorheological sample environment is presented that allows for in situ magnetic field and shear flow during small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements and is now available at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL). The setup allows performing simultaneous magnetorheological measurements together with the investigation of structural and magnetic changes on the nanometer length scale underlying the rheological response of ferrofluids. We describe the setup consisting of a commercial rheometer and a custom-made set of Helmholtz coils and show exemplarily data on the field and shear flow alignment of a dispersion of hematite nanospindles in water. OBJECTIVE: The neurophysiological processes involved in the generation of medicallyunexplained symptoms (MUS) remain unclear. This study tested three assumptions of the perception-filter model contributing to MUS: (I.) increased bodily signal strength (II.) decreased filter function, (III.) increased perception. METHODS: In this cross-sectional, observational study, trait MUS was assessed by a webbased survey (N=486). The upper and lower decile were identified as extreme groups of high (HSR; n=29; 26 women; Mage=26.0 years) and low symptom reporters (LSR; n=29; 21 women; Mage=28.4 years). Mean heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV), and cortisol awakening response (CAR) were assessed as indicators of bodily signal strength (I.). Heartbeat-evoked potentials (HEPs) were assessed during rest and a heartbeat perception task. HEPs reflect attentional resources allocated towards heartbeats and served as index of filter function (II.). Interoceptive accuracy (IAc) in heartbeat perception was assessed as an indicator of perception (III.). RESULTS: HSR showed higher HR and lower HRV (RMSSD) than LSR (I.), but no differences in CAR. HSR exhibited a stronger increase of HEPs when attention was focused on heartbeats than LSR (II.); there were no group differences in IAc (III.). CONCLUSIONS: The perception-filter model was partially confirmed in that HSR showed altered bodily signals suggesting higher sympathetic activity (I.); higher HEP increases indicated increased filter function for bodily signals (II.). As more attentional resources are mobilized to process heartbeats, but perception accuracy remains unchanged (III.), this overflow could be responsible for detecting minor bodily changes associated with MUS.
