Law has different methods and principles to resolve conflicts between norms, most of these come from Roman Law, they are well-known and much discussed. There is a whole branch of law, though, which is much less discussed while having been created exactly in order to resolve special conflicts: conflict of laws. This system within Private International Law is dedicated to providing metarules in legal situations where more than one national legal systems’ rules could be applied: CoL rules indirectly settle the situation by declaring which one’s should. The formal representation of how these rules work contributes not only to the modelling of this branch of law but also provides methodologies for concerns arising from other conflicting normative systems, such as ethically sensitive situations where there are multiple stakeholders with different moral backgrounds. Modern web applications often interact with internal web services, which are not directly accessible to users. However, malicious user inputs can be used to exploit security vulnerabilities in web services through the application front-ends. Therefore, testing techniques have been proposed to reveal security flaws in the interactions with back-end web services, e.g., XML Injections (XMLi). Given a potentially malicious message between a web application and web services, search-based techniques have been used to find input data to mislead the web application into sending such a message, possibly compromising the target web service. However, state-of-the-art techniques focus on (search for) one single malicious message at a time. Since, in practice, there can be many different kinds of malicious messages, with only a few of them which can possibly be generated by a given front-end, searching for one single message at a time is ineffective and may not scale. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel co-evolutionary algorithm (COMIX) that is tailored to our problem and uncover multiple vulnerabilities at the same time. Our experiments show that COMIX outperforms a single-target search approach for XMLi and other multi-target search algorithms originally defined for white-box unit testing. [less ▲]

Objective: To study patient survival and glycemic control before and after lung transplantation (LTx) according to the diabetes status in patients submitted to an organized management of diabetes mellitus (DM) at the Strasbourg University Hospital, France. Material and methods: Two hundred and sixty-seven LTx recipients were included retrospectively and analyzed according to diabetes status: pretransplant diabetes, new-onset diabetes mellitus after transplant (NODAT) or no diabetes. Organized DM management was coordinated by a diabetologist trained in DM management before and after transplantation and included pretransplant screening, a close monitoring of glycemia after transplant and optimized treatment before and after LTx. Results: DM was well-controlled after transplantation: mean glycosylated hemoglobin and fasting blood glucose levels after LTx were 5.8 ± 0.2% and 5.4 ± 0.1 mmol/L respectively, in pretransplant DM patients and 5.7 ± 0.1% and 5.6 ± 0.2 mmol/L respectively, in NODAT patients. The overall median survival time was 8.3 ± 1.9 years. Pretransplant DM increased the risk of mortality (1.82-fold increase; 95% confidence interval, 1.08-3.06; P = .02) in LTx recipients. Conclusions: Organized management of diabetes achieved very satisfactory glycemic control in both pretransplant DM and NODAT patients. However, no specific protocols have been created for managing DM following LTx. As DM continues to become an increasing comorbidity in LTx, there exist a significant need of studies in this area. This article discusses the transnational heroic cult that developed in Yiddish communist circles around the figure of Naftali Botwin, a young Polish-Jewish communist who was executed by Polish authorities in the city of Lwów, following a trial in which he was convicted for assassinating a police infiltrator in the ranks of the Polish Communist Party (KPP). The discussion highlights how Botwin’s legacy was appropriated in multiple, and sometimes contrasting, ways in the decades following his death, especially within the context of the creation of the Botwin Company in the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War. In doing so it will also highlight the transnational nature of this cult, as his memory lived on through poems, plays and publications that circulated through the worldwide networks and communicative spaces of Jewish (leftist) émigrés. Developments in transcriptomics techniques have caused a large demand in tailored computational methods for modelling gene expression dynamics from experimental data. Recently, so-called single-cell experiments have revolutionised genetic studies. These experiments yield gene expression data in single cell resolution for a large number of cells at a time. However, the cells are destroyed in the measurement process, and so the data consist of snapshots of an ensemble evolving over time, instead of time series. The problem studied in this article is how such data can be used in modelling gene regulatory dynamics. Two different paradigms are studied for linear system identification. The first is based on tracking the evolution of the distribution of cells over time. The second is based on the so-called pseudotime concept, identifying a common trajectory through the state space, along which cells propagate with different rates. Therefore, at any given time, the population contains cells in different stages of the trajectory. Resulting methods are compared in numerical experiments. [less ▲]

Previous research has shown that enhanced expectancies can foster a person’s motivational state and facilitate motor learning. However, the effects of enhanced expectancies on motivational state and subsequent motor learning in individuals with varied motivational states (e.g., self-efficacy; SE) are not well understood. This study examined the effects of enhanced expectancies on motivational state and motor learning in individuals with high and low SE by manipulating the type of knowledge of results (KR). We selected 60 participants from 251 male undergraduate students, based on their SE level, and assigned them to four groups: (a) Good Performance KR and High SE, (b) Poor Performance KR and High SE, (c) Good Performance KR and Low SE, and (d) Poor Performance KR and Low SE. We asked participants to throw beanbags at a target with their nondominant hand during an acquisition phase (10 blocks of six trials each) and during subsequent retention and transfer tests. During acquisition, the Good KR groups received KR from their three most accurate trials in each training block, whereas the Poor KR groups received KR from their three poorest attempts in each block. We measured accuracy scores and changes in SE as dependent variables. Results showed that KR from good trials, relative to KR from poor trials, led to better accuracy scores during acquisition and retention and transfer tests, independent of participants’ initial SE levels. Moreover, KR on good trials enhanced SE in the Good KR and Low SE group and kept SE at a high level in the Good KR and High SE group during acquisition and on the retention and transfer tests. These results provide support for the OPTIMAL (optimizing performance through intrinsic motivation and attention for learning) theory of motor learning, and we discuss results in terms of the potential effects of positive feedback on motor performance in professional athletes. Following the objectives of the Media Pluralism Monitor, this section aims to analyse to what extent the introduction of public funding dedicated to the online journalism contributes to reinforce the independence, plurality and the quality of the journalistic offer in the country. We will first provide an overview of the issues online media face in Luxembourg before dealing more in detail withthe new national regulation on online media funding. Specifically, we will analyse how it differs from the existing public subsidies for the print media and to what extend online media have benefited from these fundings. This analysis should allow us to evaluate whether the introduction of the subsidies for online journalism positively affects the media concentration, the linguistic and ideological plurality and whether it contributes to improving the quality of the media production. One of the most debated tools for the implementation of sustainable development is “payment for ecosystem services”, of which “payment for watershed services” (PWS) is one of the most developed. While proponents argue that such payments provide market value to the services that ecosystems provide for development, opponents claim that this approach commodifies the environment and promotes inequalities. This article presents an analysis of PWS programs by applying methodologies based on policy coherence for development (PCD), defined as a policy tool aimed at eliminating incoherence within sustainable development strategies that undermine their effectiveness as well as between such strategies and other policy arenas, which are also considered harmful to sustainability. By employing a PCD methodology, the article aims to identify policy mechanisms that undermine PWS programs so that stakeholders can make adjustments, thus, metaphorically ensuring that “the baby” (PWS) is not discarded with “the bathwater” (policy incoherence for sustainable development). For large scale systems, such as data centers, energy efficiency has proven to be key for reducing capital, operational expenses and environmental impact. Power drainage of a system is closely related to the type and characteristics of workload that the device is running. For this reason, this paper presents an automatic software tuning method for parallel program generation able to adapt and exploit the hardware features available on a target computing system such as an HPC facility or a cloud system in a better way than traditional compiler infrastructures. We propose a search based approach combining both exact methods and approximated heuristics evolving programs in order to find optimized configurations relying on an ever-increasing number of tunable knobs i.e., code transformation and execution options (such as the num- ber of OpenMP threads and/or the CPU frequency settings). The main objective is to outperform the configurations generated by traditional compiling infrastructures for selected KPIs i.e., performance, energy and power usage (for both for the CPU and DRAM), as well as the runtime. First experimental results tied to the local optimization phase of the proposed framework are encouraging, demonstrating between 8% and 41% improvement for all considered metrics on a reference benchmark- ing application (i.e., Linpack). This brings novel perspectives for the global optimization step currently under investigation within the presented framework, with the ambition to pave the way toward automatic tuning of energy-aware applications beyond the performance of the current state-of-the-art compiler infrastructures. This work presents a new view-invariant action recognition system that is able to classify human actions by using a single RGB camera, including challenging camera viewpoints. Understanding actions from different viewpoints remains an extremely challenging problem, due to depth ambiguities, occlusion, and a large variety of appearances and scenes. Moreover, using only the information from the 2D perspective gives different interpretations for the same action seen from different viewpoints. Our system operates in two subsequent stages. The first stage estimates the 2D human pose using a convolution neural network. In the next stage, the 2D human poses are lifted to 3D human poses, using a temporal convolution neural network that enforces the temporal coherence over the estimated 3D poses. The estimated 3D poses from different viewpoints are then aligned to the same camera reference frame. Finally, we propose to use a temporal convolution network-based classifier for cross-view action recognition. Our results show that we can achieve state of art view-invariant action recognition accuracy even for the challenging viewpoints by only using RGB videos, without pre-training on synthetic or motion capture data.
