Many domains are trying to integrate with the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem, such as public administrations starting smart city initiatives all over the world. Cities are becoming smart in many ways: smart mobility, smart buildings, smart environment and so on. However, the problem of non-interoperability in the IoT hinders the seamless communication between all kinds of IoT devices. Different domain specific IoT applications use different interoperability standards. These standards are usually not interoperable with each other. IoT applications and ecosystems therefore tend to use a vertical communication model that does not allow data sharing horizontally across different IoT ecosystems. In 2014, The Open Group published two domain-independent IoT messaging standards, O-MI and O-DF, aiming to solve the interoperability problem. In this article we describe the practical use of O-MI/O-DF standards for reaching interoperability in a mobile application for the smart city context, in particular for the Smart Mobility domain, electric vehicle (EV) charging case study. The proof-of-concept of the smart EV charging ecosystem with mobile application user interface was developed as a part of an EU (Horizon 2020) Project bIoTope. [less ▲]

In this paper we consider three transmitter designs for symbol-level-precoding (SLP), a technique that mitigates multiuser interference (MUI) in multiuser systems by designing the transmitted signals using the Channel State Information and the information-bearing symbols. The considered systems tackle the high hardware complexity and power consumption of existing SLP techniques by reducing or completely eliminating fully digital Radio Frequency (RF) chains. The first proposed architecture referred as, Antenna Selection SLP, minimizes the MUI by activating a subset of the available antennas and thus, reducing the number of required RF chains to the number of active antennas. In the other two architectures, which we refer to as RF domain SLP, the processing happens entirely in the RF domain, thus eliminating the need for multiple fully digital RF chains altogether. Instead, analog phase shifters directly modulate the signals on the transmit antennas. The precoding design for all the considered cases is formulated as a constrained least squares problem and efficient algorithmic solutions are developed via the Coordinate Descent method. Simulations provide insights on the power efficiency of the proposed schemes and the improvements over the fully digital counterparts. [less ▲]

The extraction of high-resolution, Digital Elevation Models (DEM) from very high-resolution (VHR) optical satellite imagery, as well as low altitude drone images by Photogrammetric methods or modern Structure from Motion (SFM) engines, has rapidly matured. Today both data sources are representing cost-effective alternatives to dedicated airborne sensors, especially for remote and difficult to access regions. Ever-growing archives of high-resolution Satellite imagery, are providing a rich data source which covers even the most remote locations with high-resolution imagery up to 0.30m ground sample distance multiple times enabling the generation of high-resolution DEMS. Furthermore, low-cost, low weight and easy to use drones can easily be deployed in remote regions and capture limited areas with very high resolution. Dense point clouds derived from this method provide an invaluable data source to fill the gap between globally available low-resolution DEMs and highly accurate terrestrial surveys. The presented case study investigates the use of VHR archive imagery as well as low-cost drone imagery to generate high-quality DEMs using photogrammetric tools over a remote region which is difficult to access by manned airborne platforms. We highlight the potential and limitations of both data sources to provide high resolution, accurate elevation data. [less ▲]

Rund 11% der Arbeitnehmer in Luxemburg können der Gruppe zugeordnet werden, die häufig Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien nutzt, um fern von ihrer organisationalen Arbeitsstelle zu arbeiten. Insbesondere bei männlichen und höher gebildeten Arbeitnehmern sowie bei Managern und Arbeitnehmern in akademischen Berufen ist dieser Anteil an Nutzern stärker ausgeprägt. Diese Arbeitsplatz fernen Nutzer von Informationstechnologien geben im Durchschnitt ein höheres Maß an Autonomie und Partizipation bei der Arbeit an, sind jedoch verstärkt von problematischen psychosozialen Arbeitsbedingungen (z.B. Mobbing, Work-Life-Konflikte) sowie Burnout betroffen. [less ▲]

Male students with immigrant backgrounds are disproportionally referred for special educational support outside regular classrooms or schools, which may reflect differential teachers´ expectations concerning the academic achievement of students based on socio-demographic characteristics. Although research has indicated differential teachers´ expectations for students based on immigrant background or special educational needs (SEN), less is known about a possible double vulnerability associated with combined stereotypes. Therefore, in the current study both SEN and immigrant background were systematically varied and teachers were asked to rate the students´ academic achievement. Results show that teachers´ expectations of students with SEN and immigrant background was lower than for students without immigrant background, especially in regards to language proficiency. These results may help to explain the overrepresentation of students with immigrant background in special educational programs. The educational and theoretical implications of these findings are discussed. [less ▲]

For the action of the outer automorphism group of the rank two free group on the corresponding variety of PSL(2,C) characters, two domains of discontinuity have been known to exist that are strictly larger than the set of Schottky characters. One is introduced by Bowditch in 1998 (followed by Tan, Wong and Zhang in 2008) and the other by Minsky in 2013. We prove that these two domains are equal. We then show that they are contained in the set of characters having what we call the bounded intersection property. [less ▲]

Agile methodologies enable companies to drastically increase software release pace and reduce time-to-market. In a rapidly changing environment, testing becomes a cornerstone of the software development process, guarding the system code base from the insertion of faults. To cater for this, many companies are migrating manual end-to-end tests to automated ones. This migration introduces several challenges to the practitioners. These challenges relate to difficulties in the creation of the automated tests, their maintenance and the evolution of the test code base. In this position paper, we discuss our preliminary results on such challenges and present two potential solutions to these problems, focusing on keyword-driven end-to-end tests. Our solutions leverage existing software artifacts, namely the test suite and an automatically-created model of the system under test, to support the evolution of keyword-driven test suites. Expectations regarding the work hours of older workers have changed over time. This article examines Canadian workers in their pre-retirement years to identify patterns in work hour preferences by gender—and whether work hour mismatch predicts late-stage workforce transitions. Findings from a national sample of Canadian workers show that slightly over half of all respondents were content with the number of hours they worked, but that 36% of the sample expressed a preference to work fewer hours and more than 8% expressed a preference to work more hours. Among men and women there were remarkable similarities in the factors that predicted a mismatch between respondents’ preferred and actual hours worked. While highlighting heterogeneity in the work hour preferences of Canadian workers in the years leading up to traditional retirement age, findings illustrate how mismatches between workers’ preferred and actual work hours predict later career workforce transitions. Findings also emphasize the importance of good relations with coworkers and supervisor support as factors that can enhance preferences to continue working at later career stages. Our findings also support claims that employers ought to be encouraged to focus on later career transitions and to find opportunities to enhance the fit between the number of hours required to meet work demands with individuals’ capabilities and interests. The microglial triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) signals via the activatory membrane adaptor molecule TYROBP. Genetic variants or mutations of TREM2 or TYROBP have been linked to inflammatory neurodegenerative diseases associated with aging. The typical aging process goes along with microglial changes and mild neuronal loss, but the exact contribution of TREM2 is still unclear. Aged TREM2 knock‐out mice showed decreased age‐related neuronal loss in the substantia nigra and the hippocampus. Transcriptomic analysis of the brains of 24 months old TREM2 knock‐out mice revealed 211 differentially expressed genes mostly downregulated and associated with complement activation and oxidative stress response pathways. Consistently, 24 months old TREM2 knock‐out mice showed lower transcription of microglial (Aif1 and Tmem119), oxidative stress markers (Inos, Cyba, and Cybb) and complement components (C1qa, C1qb, C1qc, C3, C4b, Itgam, and Itgb2), decreased microglial numbers and expression of the microglial activation marker Cd68, as well as accumulation of oxidized lipids. Cultured microglia of TREM2 knock‐out mice showed reduced phagocytosis and oxidative burst. Thus, microglial TREM2 contributes to age‐related microglial changes, phagocytic oxidative burst, and loss of neurons with possible detrimental effects during physiological aging. [less ▲]

A set S⊆Fn2 is called degree-d zero-sum if the sum ∑s∈Sf(s) vanishes for all n-bit Boolean functions of algebraic degree at most d. Those sets correspond to the supports of the n-bit Boolean functions of degree at most n−d−1. We prove some results on the existence of degree-d zero-sum sets of full rank, i.e., those that contain n linearly independent elements, and show relations to degree-1 annihilator spaces of Boolean functions and semi-orthogonal matrices. We are particularly interested in the smallest of such sets and prove bounds on the minimum number of elements in a degree-d zero-sum set of rank n. The motivation for studying those objects comes from the fact that degree-d zero-sum sets of full rank can be used to build linear mappings that preserve special kinds of nonlinear invariants, similar to those obtained from orthogonal matrices and exploited by Todo, Leander and Sasaki for breaking the block ciphers Midori, Scream and iScream. The project will investigate the meaning of scale in historical writings, and more precisely how scale is expressed through language in historical discourse. This question draws attention to the conceptual and linguistic mechanisms at play in building historical knowledge, when the historian moves between different layers of analysis, narration or consulted sources, involving different degrees of generality. A small historiographical corpus, in which variations of scale are clearly present, will serve to develop the digital approach/tools/methodology. Depending on the findings of the project, an extension of the research to other types of corpora is envisaged. The paper presents a workflow and first experiments using topic modelling to analyse scale representation in historiographical data. Further experiments with more documents, other models and visualisation tools, as well as eventually creating a pipeline for semi-automatic restructuration of data as zoomable texts are also envisaged.
