Sustainable or responsible investing, you’ve probably heard of it. If you haven’t yet, you will. Because the numerous cases of data breaches, employee frauds or companies finding themselves in supply chain or emission control scandals are all examples of businesses making poor ESG or environmental, social and governance (ESG) decisions. [less ▲]

In the present study, the laser welding of wire to flat geometry for miniature electromechanical hybrid components has been investigated. Considering the geometry of parts to be welded and also requirement of mechanical properties, spatial modulation of the laser beam was needed to be implemented to achieve a sound joint. Tensile-shear test and optical microscopy were employed to represent the mechanical properties and melt pool geometry of the joints. All welds were done by power modulation of the laser beam to better control the energy input at several feed rates and three different beam trajectories. Results showed that the shear load of the joint could be controlled by feed rate and the trajectory of the laser beam. Considering the material combination of the study that were nickel and CuSn6 bronze, which represented solubility in solid state, a joint stronger than base wire metal was achieved by defining a proper spatial modulation and feed rate of the laser beam. [less ▲]

This article shows how the figure of the Continuum can describe pluralities not only in the realm of sex/gender, but also in that of migration, space, border, culture, and time using the four dimensions of the Continuum: physical/body/matter – psychological/feeling/experience –social/behaviour/doing – sexual/sexual orientation/desire. In the first part of the article the figure of the Continuum will be described in its origination and summarised in its application to the concepts of gender and migration. The second part of the article will shine a first light on the application of the figure of the Continuum to the concepts of space, border, culture, and time. The article considers the question of the dissolution of binarities by the figure of the Continuum, as well as the question of the meanings and consequences of categorial systems of order. The musings of the article result in the notion that a more wide-spread application of the figure of the Continuum could inspire a new, broader humanism, and thus be understood as a basis for further reflections working towards an overstepping of post- and transhumanistic approaches. CuInS-based solar cells suffer from a low open circuit voltage. Absorbers grown under both Cu-excess and Cudeficiency have been used to fabricate record efficiency photovoltaic cells. In this work, we present the influence of stoichiometry on the quality of absorbers by means of calibrated room temperature photoluminescence and quasi Fermi level splitting evaluation (qFLs). Deep defects-related photoluminescence decreases using higher Cu/In ratio, leading to a corresponding improvement in qFLs, with values above 900 meV for high copper rich absorbers. © 2018 IEEE. European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) involves several core principles for the organization of participating national central banks (NCBs / CBs), including their independence from political institutions. Early studies show that the level of national parliamentary scrutiny over euro area NCBs varied (Lepper and Sterne 2002). In this context, our article examines the extent to which parliaments make use of four distinct control mechanisms to hold CBs accountable. We explain the very different levels of parliamentary scrutiny over NCBs in Germany, France and Belgium during the 2013-2016 period. We find that the level of scrutiny depends principally on the presence of a longstanding tradition of CB independence — and specifically the manner in which independence has been politicized and interpreted by the political class. We argue that the strength of the parliament can also explain some variation. [less ▲]

We study the question if we can recover original traders’ price expectations in experimental asset markets if subjects receive the same pre-recorded information. Our results show reliable recovery of original traders’ median expectations across treatments. Treatment comparison suggests no effect on beliefs of subjects’ action space, whether subjects trade, act as price takers or only observe the market. Our results also suggest that we are unable to recover the individual expectations beyond the median expectation. Hence, we confirm the advanced observation of the experimental literature that expectations are heterogeneous and markets do not homogenize beliefs. [less ▲]

Transparency is a novel concept in the context of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). It has arisen from regulations as a data protection principle, and it is now being studied to encompass the peculiarities of digital information. Transparency, however, is not the first security concept to be borrowed from regulations; privacy once emerged from discussions on individual’s rights. Privacy began to be vigorously debated in 1890, when Warren and Brandeis analysed legal cases for which penalties were applied on the basis of defamation, infringement of copyrights, and violation of confidence. The authors defended that those cases were, in fact, built upon a broader principle called privacy. But privacy was only given a structured definition almost one century later, in 1960, when Prosser examined cases produced after Warren and Brandeis’ work, classifying violation of privacy into four different torts; it took twenty years more before the concept was thoroughly studied for its functions in ICT. Guidelines by the OECD outlined principles to support the discussion of privacy as a technical requirement. Proceeded by international standards for a privacy framework (ISO/IEC 29100), which translated the former legal concepts into information security terms, such as data minimisation, accuracy, and accountability. Transparency has a younger, but comparable history; the current General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) defines it as a principle which requires “that any information and communication relating to the processing of those personal data be easily accessible and easy to understand [..]". However, other related and more abstract concepts preceded it. In the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996, the Privacy Rule demands to document privacy policies and procedures and to notify individuals of uses of their health information. Former European Directives, i.e., 95/46/EC and 2011/24/EU, establish “the right for individuals to have access to their personal data concerning their health [..] also in the context of cross-border healthcare”. The same did the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) of 1966, instituting that any person has a right to obtain from agencies information regarding their records. These and other similar requests refer to the transversal quality called transparency. Similarly to what happened with privacy, transparency was also the subject of guidelines that clarify its interpretation in ICT. However, no framework or standard has been defined yet that translates transparency into a technical property. This translation is the goal of our work. This thesis is dedicated to debate existing interpretations for transparency, to establish requirements and measurement procedures for it, and to study solutions that can help systems adhere to the transparency principle from a technical perspective. Our work constitutes an initial step towards the definition of a framework that helps accomplish meaningful transparency in the context of Electronic Medical Systems. [less ▲]
