[more ▼] In recent years, the possibility to combine photovoltaics (PV) and solar thermal collectors into one hybrid module (PVT-module) has been increasingly investigated. PVT-modules produce thermal and electrical energy at the same time. As the efficiency of a photovoltaic module decreases with temperature, the temperature of the heat transfer media is often limited to about 30 °C and the PVT-module is combined with a heat pump, which increases the temperature on the “warm side”. This paper deals with a PVT-module, which combines a microchannel based evaporator of a CO2 (R744) heat pump with a PV panel (PVT-direct). The PVT-direct overall system is reduced to the refrigerant circuit due to the direct refrigerant expansion in the PVT-module. A conventional PVT heat pump system has an additional glycol-water circuit. Since a pump and an additional heat exchanger for the secondary cycle were omitted, the system has increased efficiency. Due to lower module temperatures, the increase of the photovoltaic efficiency is a further advantage of the PVT-direct-module. To prove the feasibility of the PVT-direct heat pump system, the Cologne Institute for Renewable Energy (CIRE) is developing and modeling a test facility for this purpose within the research project “PVT-direkt”. Furthermore, a functional PVT-direct-module with a microchannel based evaporator was designed and built. Much importance has been given to experimental studies under laboratory conditions in order to investigate (1) the adjustment of the functionality and layout of the PVT-direct-module for characterizing the joining of brazed joints in aluminum microchannel evaporators and (2) the influence of the backside aluminum plate of the PVT-direct-module regarding leakage currents and parasitic capacitances. The overall results obtained in these experimental studies are analyzed in this paper. [more ▼] We report on the optical and magneto-optical response of hybrid plasmonic lattices that consist of pure nickel and gold nanoparticles in a checkerboard arrangement. Diffractive far-field coupling between the individual emitters of the lattices results in the excitation of two orthogonal surface lattice resonance modes. Local analyses of the radiation fields indicate that both the nickel and gold nanoparticles contribute to these collective resonances and, thereby, to the magneto-optical activity of the hybrid arrays. The strong effect of noble metal nanoparticles on the magneto-optical response of hybrid lattices opens up new avenues for the realization of sensitive and tunable magneto-plasmonic nanostructures. [more ▼] The article deals with the question of how aggregated data which allow for generalizable insights can be generated from single-case based qualitative investigations. Thereby, two central challenges of qualitative social research are outlined: First, researchers must ensure that the single-case data can be aggregated and condensed so that new collective structures can be detected. Second, they must apply methods and practices to allow for the generalization of the results beyond the specific study. In the following, we demonstrate how and under what conditions these challenges can be addressed in research practice. To this end, the research process of the construction of an empirically based typology is described. A qualitative study, conducted within the framework of the Luxembourg Youth Report, is used to illustrate this process. Specifically, strategies are presented which increase the likelihood of generalizability or transferability of the results, while also highlighting their limitations. [more ▼] Conversion of biomass as a renewable source of energy is one of the most challenging topics in industry and academy. Numerical models may help designers to understand better the details of the involved processes within the reactor, to improve process control and to increase the efficiency of the boilers. In this work, XDEM as an Euler-Lagrange model is used to predict the heat-up, drying and pyrolysis of biomass in a packed bed of spherical biomass particles. The fluid flow through the void space of a packed bed (which is formed by solid particles) is modeled as three-dimensional flow through a porous media using a continuous approach. The solid phase forming the packed bed is represented by individual, discrete particles which are described by a Lagrangian approach. On the particle level, distributions of temperature and species within a single particle are accounted for by a system of one-dimensional and transient conservation equations. The model is compared to four sets of experimental data from independent research groups. Good agreements with all experimental data are achieved, proving reliability of the used numerical methodology. The proposed model is used to investigate the impact of particle size in combination with particle packing on the char production. For this purpose, three setups of packed beds differing in particle size and packing mode are studied under the same process conditions. The predicted results show that arranging the packed bed in layers of small and large particles may increase the final average char yield for the entire bed by 46 %. © 2015 Elsevier B.V. [more ▼] Living organisms are inherently out-of-equilibrium systems. We employ recent developments in stochastic energetics and rely on a minimal microscopic model to predict the amount of mechanical energy dissipated by such dynamics. Our model includes complex rheological effects and nonequilibrium stochastic forces. By performing active microrheology and tracking micronsized vesicles in the cytoplasm of living oocytes, we provide unprecedented measurements of the spectrum of dissipated energy. We show that our model is fully consistent with the experimental data and we use it to offer predictions for the injection and dissipation energy scales involved in active fluctuations.
