[more ▼] A growing body of research demonstrates an association between gait disorders, falls, and attentional capacities in older adults. The present work empirically analyzes differences in gait parameters in frail institutionalized older adults as a function of selective attention. Gait analysis under single- and dual-task conditions as well as selective attention measures were collected from a total of 33 nursing-home residents. We found that differences in selective attention performances were related to the investigated gait parameters. Poorer selective attention performances were associated with higher stride-to-stride variabilities and a slowing of gait speed under dual-task conditions. The present findings suggest a contribution of selective attention to a safe gait. Implications for gait rehabilitation programs are discussed [less ▲] Detailed reference viewed: 155 (13 UL)![]() Ancel, Pascal ![]() in Les tiers (2016) Detailed reference viewed: 213 (8 UL)![]() Derian, Maxime ![]() in Modelling, Measurement and Control C (2016), 77(2), 130-144 Detailed reference viewed: 50 (2 UL)![]() ; Miessen, Markus ![]() Book published by Dietz Verlag (2016) Es ist Zeit, Europa neu zu denken. [more ▼] This study aims to investigate the quality of life (QOL) predictors of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), from the perspective of Leventhal’s Self-Regulation Model, in which the influence of the illness perception on QOL is mediated by coping strategies. Ninety-five PLWHA answered to the instruments Brief IPQ, Brief Cope and WHOQOL-HIV BREF concerning, respectively, illness perception, coping strategies and QOL. The results indicate that illness perception has direct and indirect effects in QOL, mediated by coping strategies. The more HIV is perceived as threatening, the worse is the perception of QOL of PLWHA; however, the increased use of acceptance, distraction and instrumental support coping strategies and the less use of behavioral disengagement and positive reinterpretation could mitigate this negative effect. [more ▼] The D33 small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) instrument at the Institut Laue–Langevin (ILL) is the most recent SANS instrument to be built at the ILL. In a project beginning in 2005 and lasting seven years, the concept has been developed, and the instrument designed, manufactured and installed. D33 was commissioned with neutrons during the second half of 2012, fully entering the ILL user programme in 2013. The scientific case required that D33 should provide a wide dynamic range of measured scattering vector magnitude q, flexibility with regard to the instrument resolution, and the provision of polarized neutrons and 3He spin analysis to facilitate and expand studies in magnetism. In monochromatic mode, a velocity selector and a flexible system of inter-collimation apertures define the neutron beam. A double-chopper system enables a time-of-flight (TOF) mode of operation, allowing an enhanced dynamic q range (qmax/qmin) and a flexible wavelength resolution. Two large multitube detectors extend the dynamic q range further, giving qmax/qmin ’ 25 in monochromatic mode and a very large qmax/qmin > 1000 in TOF mode. The sample zone is large and flexible in configuration, accommodating complex and bulky sample environments, while the position of D33 is such as to allow high magnetic fields at the sample position. The instrument is of general purpose with a performance rivalling that of D22, and is well adapted for SANS studies in scientific disciplines as diverse as solution scattering in biology and soft matter and studies of physics, materials science and magnetism. This article provides a detailed technical description of D33 and its performance and characterization of the individual components, and serves as a technical reference for users of the instrument. [more ▼] Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) usually present more disruptive and aggressive behaviors than typically developing (TD) children (Farmer & Aman, 2011). These difficult behaviors from the child can put parents of these children at a greater risk of increased mental health problems than parents of TD children (Totsika et al., 2011). The use of specific emotion regulation strategies can be a strong protective factor against adverse life events (Troy & Mauss, 2011). Additionally, how parents perceive their children’s emotional difficulties is related to their own well-being (Davis & Carter, 2008). The current study analyses how parents’ emotion dysregulation (e.g. lack of adaptive regulatory strategies) and parents’ perceptions of their children’s emotion dysregulation (e.g. negative reactivity, easily frustrated, presence of disruptive behaviors) contribute to parents’ depressive symptomatology. 37 parents of children with ASD and 41 parents of TD children completed questionnaires regarding their depressive symptomatology, their emotion dysregulation, and their perception of their children’s emotion dysregulation. Parents of children with ASD, compared to parents of TD children, reported more depressive symptomatology and more emotion dysregulation in themselves and in their children. Regression analyses revealed that parents’ own emotion dysregulation and their perception of their children’s emotion dysregulation contributed to their depressive symptomatology above and beyond ASD diagnosis. Furthermore, mediation analysis revealed that parents’ emotion dysregulation mediates the relation between ASD diagnosis and parents’ depressive symptomatology. These results may have implications for the prevention and development of interventions on the well-being and mental health of parents of children with ASD. [more ▼] Medical advances contribute to raise life expectancy of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV). However, they still face challenges related to the disease, thus, quality of life (QOL) became a priority on the field. The self-regulatory model (SRM) guided this study. Illness perceptions (IP) are the beliefs, cognitions, representations of a disease, impacting PLHIV coping strategies and QOL. Tenacious goal pursuit (TGP) is the pursuit of goals with determination, flexible goal adjustment (FGA) is doing it with flexibility, disengaging if necessary, they can both be considered as coping strategies. This study aims to measure the impact of HIV Perception in the QOL of PLHIV mediated by the TGP and FGA. Data was collected from 196 PLHIV with the WHOQOL-HIV Bref, the Brief-IPQ and the FGA and TGP scales. Structural equation model provided a good fit consistent with the theoretical SRM. IP, TGP and FGA had direct effects on the QOL of PLHIV. IP had also an indirect effect (partially mediated by TGP/FGA), suggesting that TGP/FGA reduce the impact of a threatening IP in the QOL. Goal oriented interventions should focus in the HIV perception of PLHIV to ameliorate their QOL [less ▲] Detailed reference viewed: 27 (2 UL)![]() Biryukov, Alex ![]() ![]() in USENIX Security 2016 (2016) In this paper we explore several contexts where an adversary has an upper hand over the defender by using special hardware in an attack. [more ▼] In this paper we explore several contexts where an adversary has an upper hand over the defender by using special hardware in an attack. These include password processing, hard-drive protection, cryptocurrency mining, resource sharing, code obfuscation, etc. We suggest memory-hard computing as a generic paradigm, where every task is amalgamated with a certain procedure requiring intensive access to RAM both in terms of size and (very importantly) bandwidth, so that transferring the computation to GPU, FPGA, and even ASIC brings little or no cost reduction. Cryptographic schemes that run in this framework become \emph{egalitarian} in the sense that both users and attackers are equal in the price-performance ratio conditions. Based on existing schemes like {Argon2} and the recent generalized-birthday proof-of-work, we suggest a generic framework and two new schemes: {MTP}, a memory-hard Proof-of-Work based on the memory-hard function with fast verification and short proofs. It can be also used for memory-hard time-lock puzzles. {MHE}, the concept of memory-hard encryption, which utilizes available RAM to strengthen the encryption for the low-entropy keys (allowing to bring back 6 letter passwords). [more ▼] Over the past two decades, educational research in Germany has undergone unprecedented changes. Following large-scale assessments such as the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), and a political interest in evidence-based policy-making, quality assessment and internationalization, direct involvement of national decision-makers has led to the establishment of new organizations, programs, funding structures, professorships, and training programs. Thus, a markedly different educational research field has emerged in contrast to the traditional philosophy-rooted, hermeneutics-trained and humanities-based German pedagogy or education science. Instead, the new paradigm refers to itself as "empirical educational research" (EER). Thus, we trace institutionalization processes of EER from early 1995 through the foundation of the Empirical Educational Research Association (GEBF), which rivals the long-standing German Educational Research Association (DGfE). Official documents shed light on policymakers’ and funding agencies’ motivations and rationales as they successfully engage in building new research infrastructure. Expert interviews conducted with (inter)national representatives illuminate perceptions of crucial actors involved in field institutionalization. What are the causes and consequences of the emergent educational research in Germany? Extending the neo-institutionalist organizational field literature, particularly about incipient stages of such fields, we show that a new division of labor transcends national and international as well as governmental and non-governmental borders.
