It has long been claimed that stories are a powerful tool for language learning. Storytelling is often used as a discrete pedagogical approach in primary modern foreign language (MFL) lessons in England. There has, however, been little investigation into how storytelling might impact on vocabulary learning in the primary classroom. This article focuses on how a London primary teacher used stories in German lessons in a Year 6 class (ages 10–11), and analyses the words and sentences the case-study children remembered over a brief period of time. Data were collected over two terms through observations, interviews and posttests. The findings illustrate the wide range of teaching strategies that allowed for explicit and incidental learning and encouraged meaningful language use. They also show that children recalled a considerable number of words and sentences. [less ▲]

Opportunities for microbes to establish infections are enhanced under spaceflight conditions because space travel stimulates their growth (Chap. 15) and has a negative impact on immune functions. Indeed, it has been shown that spaceflight affects lymphoid organs (Gridley et al. 2003; Baqai et al. 2009) and induces variations in peripheral blood leukocyte subsets (Chap. 9). Neutrophil, monocyte, and NK cell functions are affected by spaceflight (Chaps. 10-12). The activation of T lymphocytes is also severely depressed under low gravity conditions (Cogoli et al. 1984) because interleukin-2 (IL-2) and IL-2receptor gene expression are modified, the delivery of the costimulatory signal to activate the B7/CD28 pathway and the protein kinase A (PKA) signaling pathway, which is a key early regulator in T cell activation, are hindered. Furthermore, a TH2 cytokine shift is associated with spaceflight. If this TH2 shift persists during long missions, it could represent a significant clinical risk for TH2-related autoimmune diseases, allergies, hypersensitivities, and disease susceptibility related to diminished cell-mediated immunity. Studies on plasma antibody levels did not reveal significant changes after short spaceflights (Rykova et al. 2008), but contradictory results were reported after long missions. Indeed, several studies (Konstantinova et al. 1993; Bascove et al. 2008, 2009; Guéguinou et al. 2009, 2010) reported increased levels of immunoglobulin while Rykova et al. (2008) reported normal amounts of antibodies after prolonged space missions. Lastly, a differential sensitivity of cellular and humoral immunity to spaceflight conditions seems to exist because it was shown that the cellular, but not the humoral, systems are affected by short periods of flight. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg. OBJECTIVE To investigate if there is a reduced risk of type 1 diabetes in children breastfed or exclusively breastfed by performing a pooled analysis with adjustment for recognized confounders. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Relevant studies were identified from literature searches using MEDLINE, Web of Science, and EMBASE. Authors of relevant studies were asked to provide individual participant data or conduct prespecified analyses. Meta-analysis techniques were used to combine odds ratios (ORs) and investigate heterogeneity between studies. RESULTS Data were available from 43 studies including 9,874 patients with type 1 diabetes. Overall, there was a reduction in the risk of diabetes after exclusive breast-feeding for >2 weeks (20 studies; OR = 0.75, 95% CI 0.64–0.88), the association after exclusive breast-feeding for >3 months was weaker (30 studies; OR = 0.87, 95% CI 0.75–1.00), and no association was observed after (nonexclusive) breast-feeding for >2 weeks (28 studies; OR = 0.93, 95% CI 0.81–1.07) or >3 months (29 studies; OR = 0.88, 95% CI 0.78–1.00). These associations were all subject to marked heterogeneity (I2 = 58, 76, 54, and 68%, respectively). In studies with lower risk of bias, the reduced risk after exclusive breast-feeding for >2 weeks remained (12 studies; OR = 0.86, 95% CI 0.75–0.99), and heterogeneity was reduced (I2 = 0%). Adjustments for potential confounders altered these estimates very little. CONCLUSIONS The pooled analysis suggests weak protective associations between exclusive breast-feeding and type 1 diabetes risk. However, these findings are difficult to interpret because of the marked variation in effect and possible biases (particularly recall bias) inherent in the included studies. [less ▲]

In recent years, energy crops have been increasingly introduced as co-substrates in biogas plants due to their high biogas yield potential. The purpose of the current research was to investigate the influence of the mixture of maize and grass silages, added as feedstock, on the specific methane production (SMP) and on the process dynamics. To this end, biological methane potential (BMP) tests were carried out in 500ml reactors with grass and maize silage in mono-digestion and 3 different co-digestion mixtures. For selected mixtures, process dynamics were further investigated in batch anaerobic experiments in 1 litre reactors by measuring different control parameters. A positive correlation was observed between the proportion of grass in the mixture and the specific methane yield due to the higher protein content (a yield up to 6% higher in comparison with mono-digestion of maize). Nevertheless, increasing amounts of grass were also related with slower degradation (lower hydrolysis rate constants) and higher instability during the first days of digestion. [less ▲]

We present the preliminary findings of a multilingual study on speech errors (‘lapsus linguae’ Meringer and Mayer 1895; Freud, 1901; Meringer, 1908). For the purpose of this presentation, we compiled and analyzed a corpus of video-recordings of twenty short sequences of talk in French, and twenty short sequences of talk in English; all containing mis-performances in oral delivery on behalf of TV hosts and presenters. While briefly discussing previous work and existing models for the classification of errors (Meringer and Mayer 1895; Freud, 1901; Fromkin, 1971, 1973; Dell, Juliano, and Govindjee, 1993; Dziekońska, 2012); we take a multimodal look at the sequential environment of errors in our corpus and analyze whether and how they are ‘acknowledged’ and are ‘repaired’ (Sacks, 1964; Sacks Schegloff, Jefferson, 1977). A close analysis of speakers’ face work reveals that, although not universally, they consistently place a brow raise on the ‘repaired’ material. At times, the lapsus is ‘acknowledged’ with the production of a response cry (Goffman, 1981), in which case, the brow raise is placed on the cry. Regardless of the response cry occurring synchronically with the brow raise; we discuss that it is possible to think of the brow raise as of a ‘change of state token’, (Heritage, 1984b; Schegloff, 2007); thus embodying the local change in speakers’ “state of knowledge, information, orientation or awareness” (Heritage, 1985: 299). Data also suggest a brow raise following the lapse, may transit from emotional display (i.e. surprise – Ekman, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006) to face-keeping device. Different gestural and postural configurations may occur depending on whether the error is promptly repaired (i.e. straight positioning of the ‘body torque’- Schegloff, 1998) or whether develops into a laughter (i.e. presence of ‘self-adapters’ - Ekman, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006).
