A new statistical model for choice-based conjoint analysis is proposed. The model uses auxiliary variables to account for outliers and to detect the salient features that influence decisions. Unlike recent classification-based approaches to choice-based conjoint analysis, a sparsity-aware maximum likelihood (ML) formulation is proposed to estimate the model parameters. The proposed approach is conceptually appealing, mathematically tractable, and is also well-suited for distributed implementation. Its performance is tested and compared to the prior state-of-art using synthetic as well as real data coming from a conjoint choice experiment for coffee makers, with very promising results. This article investigates the influence of different goals in processing students’ attributes (e. g., mathematical achievement in a test) on inferences and achievement judgments. Teachers as experts and university students of natural sciences as laymen received a case report. Participants were instructed to either form an impression of the personality and the performance of the student (impression formation goal) or to predict his/her future performance (prediction goal). Afterwards participants summarized the case report in their own words and judged the academic achievements of the described student. With the prediction goal, experts proceeded by focusing on the attributes of a student; with the impression formation goal, they used a given social category. Laymen’s processing was not influenced by goals. [less ▲]

The problem of optimal sensor placement for FDI consists in determining the set of sensors that minimizes a pre-defined cost function satisfying at the same time a pre-established set of FDI specifications for a given set of faults. This paper recalls three model-based optimal sensor location approaches: an Incremental search, a Heuristic search and a Binary Integer Linear Programming (BILP) formulation. The main contribution of this paper is a comparative study that addresses efficiency, flexibility and other issues. The performance of the approaches is demonstrated by an application to a fuel cell stack system. [less ▲]

Based on the concepts of imagined communities and imagined families the article de- velops at the intersection of aging and migration studies the thesis, that the imaginary dimension of social communities can contribute to the mobilization of social support. But at the same time it can cover the missing potential of social support in old age. Against this background, suggestions for social support research are made to discover conflicts and ambivalences that might be hidden through the ideal imagination of personal relations and communities.
