Endometrial carcinoma (EC) is the most frequent among infiltrating tumors of the female genital tract, with myometrial invasion representing an increase in the rate of recurrences and a decrease in survival. We have previously described ETV5 transcription factor associated with myometrial infiltration in human ECs. In this work, we further investigated ETV5 orchestrating downstream effects to confer the tumor the invasive capabilities needed to disseminate in the early stages of EC dissemination. Molecular profiling evidenced ETV5 having a direct role on epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). In particular, ETV5 modulated Zeb1 expression and E-Cadherin repression leading to a complete reorganization of cell-cell and cell-substrate contacts. ETV5-promoted EMT resulted in the acquisition of migratory and invasive capabilities in endometrial cell lines. Furthermore, we identified the lipoma-preferred partner protein as a regulatory partner of ETV5, acting as a sensor for extracellular signals promoting tumor invasion. All together, we propose ETV5-transcriptional regulation of the EMT process through a crosstalk with the tumor surrounding microenvironment, as a principal event initiating EC invasion. [less ▲]

A Completely Separating System (CSS) C on [n] is a collection of blocks of [n] such that for any pair of distinct points x,y ∈ [n], there exist blocks A,B ∈ C such that x ∈ A-B and y ∈ B-A. One possible generalization of CSSs are r-CSSs. Let T be a subset of 2[n], the power set of [n]. A point i ∈ [n] is called r-separable if for every r-subset S ⊆ [n]-i there exists a block T ∈ T with i ∈ T and with the property that S is disjoint from T. If every point i ∈ [n] is r-separable, then T is an r-CSS (or r-(n)CSS). Furthermore, if T is a collection of k-blocks, then T is an r-(n,k)CSS. In this paper we offer some general results, analyze especially the case r=2 with the additional condition that k ≥ 5, present a construction using Latin squares, and mention some open problems. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. This work presents two UAS See and Avoid approaches using Fuzzy Control. We compare the performance of each controller when a Cross-Entropy method is applied to optimase the parameters for one of the controllers. Each controller receive information from an image processing frontend that detect and track targets in the environment. Visual information is then used under a visual servoing approach to perform autonomous avoidance. Experimental flight trials using a small quadrotor were performed to validate and compare the behaviour of both controllers. [less ▲]
