In this paper we address the problem of uncoor- dinated highway traffic. We first identify the main causes of the capacity drop, namely high traffic demand and inadequate driver reaction. In the past, traffic and user behavior have been accurately described by cellular automata (CA) models. In this paper we extend the CA model to deal with highway traffic fluctuations and jams. Specifically, the model incorporates the communication layer between vehicles. The model thus enables us to study the impact of inter-vehicular communications and in particular the delivery of critical and timely upstream traffic information on driver reaction. Based on the newly-available traffic metrics, we propose an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) that suggests non-intuitive speed reduction in order to avoid the formation of so-called phantom jams. The results show that using such a system considerably increases the overall traffic flow, reduces travel time and avoids unnecessary slow-downs. [less ▲]

During November 2011 a EURAMET key comparison of absolute gravimeters was organized in the Underground Laboratory for Geodynamics in Walferdange, Luxemburg. The comparison assembled 22 participants coming from 16 countries and four different continents. The comparison was divided into two parts: a key comparison that included six National Metrology Institutes or Designated Institutes, and a pilot study including all participants. The global result given by the pilot study confirms that all instruments are absolutely coherent with each other. The results obtained in the key comparison confirm a good agreement between the NMI instruments. Finally, a link to ICAG-2009 [http://iopscience.iop.org/0026-1394/49/1A/07011/] shows also that the NMI gravimeters are stable in time. Main text. The advances in technology and science lead to the creation of mechatronic systems with increasing complexity. Due to this rising complexity of the systems to be developed, the requirements towards the development processes are ascending in the same manner. As a result of the historical evolution of the involved domains (mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and computer science), the specific IT-Tools were not designed for interdisciplinary processes and can usually even barely exchange data among each other. This causes a lack of interoperability and results in ineffective development processes with drawbacks on the consistency of interdisciplinary model data. To deal with this situation, research and industry encouraged the idea of a domain-spanning system model, which contains the cross-domain information and important relations (e. g. Chen et al. 2009). One promising approach to survey these interdisciplinary information and relations and thus help the people participating in the design process is based on multi-agent systems. The basis on which a multi-agent system is able to make decisions concerning the cross-domain information and relations can be a model of the mechatronic system modelled with the modelling language SysML. This paper will present an approach how this system models can be developed using the modelling language SysML and furthermore it will expound a practical model of a real mechatronic system – a turbocharging system for a car engine. We propose a parametrized version of arity gap. The parametrized arity gap gap(f,l) of a function f: Aⁿ→B measures the minimum decrease in the number of essential variables of f when l consecutive identifications of pairs of essential variables are performed. We determine gap(f,l) for an arbitrary function f and a positive integer l. We also propose other variants of arity gap and discuss further problems pertaining to the effect of identification of variables on the number of essential variables of functions. [less ▲]

This article discusses the strategy repertoires and strategy development of six English children who learned foreign languages at primary school. My study differs from mainstream research, in that it focuses on young children and on the development of their strategies, draws on sociocultural theory and uses ethnographic methods. My findings show that the six children developed a range of strategies over the course of a calendar year in spite of receiving no direct strategy instruction. The primary classroom encouraged learner autonomy and stimulated children to reflect on their learning which, in turn, enabled them to refine their strategies. [less ▲]
