In an essential and quite general setup, based on networks, we identify Schnakenberg's observables as the constraints that prevent a system from relaxing to equilibrium, showing that, in the linear regime, steady states satisfy a minimum entropy production principle. The result is applied to master equation systems, opening a new path to a well-known version of the principle regarding invariant states. Moreover, with the aid of a simple example, the principle is shown to conform to Prigogine's original formulation. Finally, we discuss analogies and differences with a recently proposed maximum entropy production principle. [less ▲]

The classical Banzhaf power and interaction indexes used in cooperative game theory appear naturally as leading coefficients in the standard least squares approximation of the game under consideration by a set function of a specified degree. We observe that this still holds true if we consider approximations by set functions depending on specified variables. We show that the Banzhaf influence index can also be obtained from this new approximation problem. Considering certain weighted versions of this approximation, we also introduce a class of weighted Banzhaf influence indexes and analyze their most important properties. [less ▲]

This paper presents a controller and observer design for a class of nonlinear systems that have: i. the coupling of the unmeasured states and unknown parameters ii. unknown Backlash- Like Hysteresis (BLH) at its actuation. Firstly, we use a developed mathematical model of the BLH in which the BLH is cast into two terms; a linear term and a bound. Then a robust adaptive control law, unmeasured states observer, and unknown parameters estimator are designed such that global stability is achieved for all signals involved. Using the suggested scheme, simulation is carried out for a single- link mechanical system with a BLH exist at its actuation and dynamic friction torque exerts on the joint. Excellent tracking performance is obtained through the suggested approach and all closed loop signals are bounded. [less ▲]
