[less ▲]

An application of interleaved frequency-division multiple-access (IFDMA) for mobile communications has become an active field of research since 1998. The special interest has been given to the uplink of mobile communication since low peak-to-average power ratio makes IFDMA attractive for hand-held mobile devices allowing an application of cheap amplifiers. The IFDMA signal can be generated simply by compression and repetition of the transmit data sequence, without usage of fast Fourier transformation. Due to the periodic nulls in transmit spectrum, other users may utilize the same frequency band allowing multiple access. This work contributes to the state of the art in the field of IFDMA in the following areas: data detection, PAPR reduction of multi-carrier systems, an estimation of frequency offsets in multicarrier uplink, where many users are simultaneously active. IL-24, a member of the IL-10 family of cytokines, is produced by monocytes and Th2 cells. Interestingly, immune cells do not appear to express specific IL-24 receptor chains (IL-20R1/IL-20R2 and IL-22R/IL-20R2), it is therefore unlikely that IL-24 has classical immune-modulating properties. Skin, on the other hand, seems to represent a major target tissue for IL-24 and related cytokines such as IL-19, -20, and -22. However, the initial interest in IL-24 did not arise from its physiological signalling properties through its cognate receptors but rather because of its tentative ability to selectively kill different cancer cells. In an attempt to further investigate the signalling events underlying the IL-24-induced cancer cell death, we found that melanoma cell lines did not react in the expected and previously described way. Using several different forms and delivery modes of IL-24, we were unable to detect any apoptosis-inducing properties of this cytokine in melanoma cells. In the present "Point of view" we will briefly summarise these findings and put them in context of published reports stating that IL-24 might be a long sought after treatment for several types of cancer. By using some basic calculus of multiple integration, we provide an alternative expression of the integral $$ \int_{]a,b[^n} f(\mathbf{x},\min x_i,\max x_i) \, d\mathbf{x}, $$ in which the minimum and the maximum are replaced with two single variables. We demonstrate the usefulness of that expression in the computation of orness and andness average values of certain aggregation functions. By generalizing our result to Riemann-Stieltjes integrals, we also provide a method for the calculation of certain expected values and distribution functions. [less ▲]
