In this paper we would like to thoroughly cover the problem of computing all kernels, i.e. minimal outranking and/or outranked independent choices in a bipolar- valued outranking digraph. First we introduce in detail the concept of bipolar-valued characterisation of outranking digraphs, choices and kernels. In a second section we present and discuss several algorithms for enumerating the kernels in a crisp digraph. A third section will be concerned with extending these algorithms to bipolar-valued outranking digraphs. [less ▲]

Today, the interest in integrated dynamic analysis of mechatronic systems increases. Different approaches are possible depending on the nature of the system, on the required complexity of the model, or simply on the tools available to the engineer. During this work, the aim was to implement specialized commercial simulation software packages and to combine them in order to simulate the dynamic behavior of mechatronic systems as for example an injection molding machine. The multi-body simulation software is the backbone of the current analysis as it inherently models large non-linear motions. It is possible to account for the flexibility of components in the MBS model if necessary. Furthermore, other simulation codes were used to model the hydraulic and controls systems. The case studies show the interest and the potential of a combined analysis of mechatronic systems. Once the different sub-models, generated with the adequate simulation tool, have been successfully linked and validated by measurements, various scenarios can be simulated and analyzed. The model provides the engineer with an additional insight into the overall system and thus with a better understanding of its dynamic characteristics. The interactions between the subsystems, which may be of very distinctive nature, can be investigated. Generally, it is difficult to predict such relations intuitively. Finally, the model allows to simulate with different design parameters and to asses the effect of modifications to these on the overall performance of the machine. This helps to identify the significant parameters that are crucial for an optimized functioning. [less ▲]

In this paper, we address the issue of perturbed information at the transmitter in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. Two schemes, correlation matrix feedback and channel information feedback, are proposed to convey information necessary for achieving capacity to the transmitter. This information is perturbed due to various impairments. A perturbation analysis is carried out to study the variations in mutual information for each of the proposed schemes. For ergodic channels, this analysis is used to design a MIMO system with a limited rate feedback. Using a codebook-based approach, vector quantizers are designed to minimize the loss in ergodic capacity for each of the proposed schemes, and their performance is studied. A non-codebook method, parameter-based feedback, is also presented, and the underlying rate-performance tradeoff is highlighted [less ▲]

Two identical top parts of a face photograph look different if their bottom parts differ. This perceptual illusion, the "face composite effect", is taken as strong evidence that faces are processed as a whole rather than as a collection of independent features. To test the hypothesis that areas responding preferentially to faces in the human brain represent faces holistically, we recorded functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during an adaptation paradigm with the composite face illusion. In both the middle fusiform gyrus (MFG) and the inferior occipital gyrus (IOG), we observed a significantly larger response to the same top face when it was aligned with different bottom parts than with the same bottom part, with a most robust effect in the right middle fusiform gyrus. This difference was not found when the top and the bottom face parts were spatially misaligned or when the faces were presented upside-down. These findings indicate that facial features are integrated into holistic face representations in areas of the human visual cortex responding preferentially to faces. [less ▲]

Finger-digit response compatibility was tested by asking participants to identify Arabic digits by pressing one of ten keys with all ten fingers. The direction of the finger-digit mapping was varied by manipulating the global direction of the hand-digit mapping as well as the direction of the finger-digit mapping within each hand (in each case, from small to large digits, or the reverse). The hypothesis of a left-to-right mental number line predicted that a complete left-to-right mapping should be easier whereas the hypothesis of a representation based on finger counting predicted that a counting-congruent mapping should be easier. The results show that a mapping congruent with the prototypical finger-counting strategy reported by the participants leads to better performance than a mapping congruent with a left-to-right oriented mental number line, and demonstrate that finger-counting strategies clearly influence the way numerical information is mentally represented and processed.
