[more ▼] We study the effects of mixing ferroelectric and antiferroelectric liquid-crystal compounds (FLCs and AFLCs) when the former are strictly synclinic and the latter strictly anticlinic, i.e. one mixture component exhibits only SmC* and the other only SmCa* as tilted phase. Three different paths between syn- and anticlinicity were detected: transition directly between SmC* and SmCa*, transition via the SmCβ* and SmCγ* subphases, or by “escaping” the clinicity frustration by reducing the tilt to zero, i.e. the SmA* phase is extended downwards in temperature, separating SmC* from SmCa* in the phase diagram. The most common path is the one via the subphases, demonstrating that these phases appear as a result of frustration between syn- and anticlinic and, consequently, between syn- and antipolar order. For assessing the role of chirality, we also replaced the FLC with non-chiral synclinics. With one of the AFLCs, the route via supbhases was detected even in this case, suggesting that chirality —although necessary— does not have quite the importance that has previously been attributed to the appearance of the subphases. The path chosen in the mixture study seemed to be determined mainly by the synclinic component, the subphase induction occurring only when the SmA*-SmC* transition was second order. [more ▼] We report on a study of a magnetic nanocomposite of the Nanoperm type (Fe89Zr7B3Cu1) by magnetic small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The understanding of the magnetic microstructure of these materials leaves much to be desired since we lack techniques capable of resolving the spin structure in the bulk with nanoscale resolution. Here, we present an analysis of the SANS signal by which one cannot only characterise the nanoscale structure of the spin system, but which allows to identify origin and structure of the perturbing field. In Nanoperm, an unusual angular anisotropy of the scattering suggests that the local spin misalignment decorates, as the most important perturbing field, dipole stray fields around the crystalline phase of the composite. [more ▼] Oxidative stress is a cardinal feature of the inflammatory process and is involved in various pathologies including atherosclerosis. One of the important mechanisms in which oxidative stress may play a role is activation of matrix metalloproteinases such as MMP-2, which are involved in plaque destabilization. We investigated the mechanisms by which oxidative stress induces MMP-2 activation in cultured human coronary artery smooth muscle cells. Using zymography and Western blot analysis, we showed that oxidized low-density lipoproteins activate MMP-2 through up-regulation of the expression and activation of a membrane-type 1 matrix metalloproteinase (MT1-MMP). A second mechanism of MMP-2 activation involves oxidative radicals generated by the xanthine/xanthine oxidase complex (X/Xo). Research on these two mechanisms of MMP activation could lead to the elaboration of new vascular therapies for the treatment of atheroma based on interruption of a specific oxidative stress pathway. [more ▼] BACKGROUND: A triplication of the alpha-synuclein gene was found to cause autosomal dominant Lewy body disease in two distinct families. METHOD: We searched for alterations of alpha-synuclein gene dosage and analysed the entire coding region for point mutations in 54 dementia with Lewy body disease (DLB) and in 103 young onset Parkinson's disease (PD) patients from Central Europe. RESULTS: We could not detect any quantitative alterations in the gene dosage of alpha-synuclein. Mutational screening of the entire coding region of alpha-synuclein revealed only one silent mutation V3V (adenine9guanine) in one case. CONCLUSIONS: Thus, this phenomenon appears not to be a major cause in the pathogenesis of sporadic DLB and young onset PD in this European population.
