Background: Findings from animal studies suggest sympathetic inhibition during dietary restriction as opposed to increased sympathetic activity during re-feeding. Objective: The present study investigated sympatho-vagal balance in relation to endocrinological parameters of malnutrition status in women diagnosed with bulimia nervosa. Methods: Sixteen female volunteers diagnosed with bulimia nervosa were categorised according to their serum profile (glucose, pre-albumin, insuline-like growth factor, TSH, leptin) into currently malnourished (i.e. fasting) versus non-malnourished (not fasting) and compared with fourteen non-eating disordered controls matched for age and BMI. Spectral components of heart rate variability (HRV) were calculated on resting heart rate data using autoregressive analysis. Results: As expected, fasting bulimic women displayed lower values of resting heart rate compared to non-fasting women and controls. Non-fasting bulimic women consistently showed lower results in the vagally mediated component and significantly higher results in the sympathetically mediated component of HRV. Conclusions: These results confirm the notion of cardiac sympathetic inhibition during caloric restriction and increased activity during periods of normal eating or bingeing. [less ▲]

This expert report summarizes recent social science research literature on school-to-work transitions, emphasizing the opportunity, experience and performance gaps between the highly skilled and low skilled. Questions addressed in this report include: which youth have a higher risk of failing to transition successfully from school to vocational training, and what are the pathways that lead to a higher probability of low education attainment? Which solutions to these difficulties have been proposed? Which factors may contribute to low qualified youth’s successful entry into work? To answer such questions, the report reviews current international research results and shows how these studies can be used in evaluating the situations faced by at-risk youth. Where possible, the findings for Germany are embedded within a broader international comparison to illustrate a variety of approaches to the study of transitions from the world of schooling and training to the world of work, including training schemes and programs designed to serve at-risk youth. The aim of the present study was to investigate body dissatisfaction and eating attitudes and the moderating role of gender, parental influences, body-mass index (BMI), and physical activity in 9 ± 10-year-old children. Sixty-eight 9 ± 10-year-old children (36 boys, 32 girls) were asked to indicate their perceived and ideal body size using the figure drawing scale of Childress et al. (1993). Physical activity levels were assessed with a diary method over 7 consecutive days. Questionnaires were used to collect information on children's eating habits and children's perception of parental weight, parental attitudes towards body size, and eating habits. Children's weight and height were measured and the BMI calculated. 44 % of boys and 34 % of girls wanted to be thinner than they perceived themselves to be. Multiple regression analyses indicated that this desire was predicted by children's BMI, perceived overweight of mother, and eating patterns indicating restraint eating style. Given that only 13 % were overweight, the percentage of children wanting to be thinner is of concern. The current results indicate that there may be an increasing trend for a thinner body ideal in boys compared to previous reports. [less ▲]

It has been recently demonstrated that the classical EM algorithm for learning Gaussian mixture models can be successfully implemented in a decentralized manner by resorting to gossip-based randomized distributed protocols. In this paper we describe a gossip-based implementation of an alternative algorithm for learning Gaussian mixtures in which components are added to the mixture one after another. Our new Greedy Gossip-based Gaussian mixture learning algorithm uses gossip-based parallel search, starting from multiple initial guesses, for finding good components to add to the mixture in each component allocation step. It can be executed on massive networks of small computing devices, converging to a solution exponentially faster than its centralized version, while reaching the same quality of generated models. Design flaws often become apparent at a time when the product is already in use and its development process, which in many cases includes extensive testing of parts, components and prototypes, is considered complete. Such flaws may reach from poor ergonomics to the total failure of the product. Often, especially when user safety is at risk, design flaws are so severe that companies are forced to announce a product callback. Petroski suggests that many (if not most) products, which we are familiar with today, have a long history of previously flawed designs [3]. This implies that designers did indeed learn from design flaws in both senses of the word “learn”: discovering the flaw and utilizing the knowledge gained about it to find a solution. As far as discovering a design flaw is concerned, it can be assumed that the feedback from those who interact with the physical products in practice – the individuals who maintain, repair, recycle but essentially use the products – plays an important role. In their previous work, the authors pointed out hat this feedback information could not only be vital for identifying potential product hazards but helps designers to review the effects of their design measures and therefore to improve their products from generation to generation [4]. In order to obtain a better understanding of how designers learn from design flaws, a mail survey was conducted that aimed at investigating company-, process- and product-related factors of this phenomenon and to answer (among others) the following research questions: • To what extent are design flaws of a company’s (or a competitor’s) product a driving force in the development of new products? • How do the designers of a company become aware of design flaws of their products? • How successful are companies in correcting design flaws? • How do successful and unsuccessful companies differ in terms of size, activity profile of their designers and characteristics of their products? • What are possible factors that influence the success in correcting a design fault? [less ▲]
