Profiling driving behavior has become a relevant aspect in fleet management, automotive insurance and eco-driving. Detecting inefficient or aggressive drivers can help reducing fleet degradation, insurance policy cost and fuel consumption. In this paper, we present a Fuzzy-Logic based driver scoring mechanism that uses smartphone sensing data, including accelerometers and GPS. In order to evaluate the proposed mechanism, we have collected traces from a testbed consisting in 20 vehicles equipped with an Android sensing application we have developed to this end. The results show that the proposed sensing variables using smartphones can be merged to provide each driver with a single score. [less ▲]

The proliferation of smartphones and mobile devices embedding different types of sensors sets up a prodigious and distributed sensing platform. In particular, in the last years there has been an increasing necessity to monitor drivers to identify bad driving habits in order to optimize fuel consumption, to reduce CO2 emissions or, indeed, to design new reliable and fair pricing schemes for the insurance market. In this paper, we analyze the driver sensing capacity of smartphones. We propose a mobile tool that makes use of the most common sensors embedded in current smartphones and implement a Fuzzy Inference System that scores the overall driving behavior by combining different fuzzy sensing data. In this paper, we study the IEEE 802.11 discovery process needed for handovers and propose an adaptive scanning strategy based on application requirements. The scanning process consists in actively probing the radio channels to gather access points information. We consider a well decoupled situation in which the scanning latency, the scanning failure rate and the number of discovered access points define the scanning performance. We model these scanning metrics by analytical expressions to represent the performance trade-off, i.e., finding the largest number of access points with a minimum latency. We present a novel approach based on a multi-objective optimization approach to obtain the optimal number of channels to scan, the optimal channel sequence and its correspondent scanning timers. Finally, we compare one fixed and two adaptive scanning approaches by means of simulations. We show that our adaptive scanning strategies better manage the performance trade-off and allow different application profiles to match with specific scanning latency. [less ▲]

Nowadays, the increasing diversity of wireless technologies opens the possibility for a mobile device to exploit the aggregated capacity of multiple wireless networks. This aggregated capacity gives different possible assignations of on-going flows to the available interfaces. The most suitable configuration may depend on user-imposed restrictions, applications QoS or energy constraints. In this paper, we study the flow-to-interface assignation problem considering bandwidth and energy constraints for running applications. We model the network selection as a multi-objective optimization problem and use genetic algorithms to search for optimal solutions. Using simulation, we show and discuss different optimal assignations for an active device whose number of flows is greater than the available interfaces. [less ▲]
