[more ▼] This contribution is a reassessment of the first princely cartulary of the county of Luxembourg, a composite manuscript including three sections: a Liber feodorum, containing the copies of feudal charters kept in the count’s archives, an administrative list of the county’s incomes, both dating back to the beginning of the fourteenth century, as well as a list of revenues relating to the marquisate of Arlon, compiled at the end of the fifteenth century. Although this manuscript has attracted a fair amount of attention from scholars, starting with F.-X. Würth-Paquet and Nicolas van Werveke in the nineteenth century, it was still in need of a systematic codicological investigation. This study is completed by a palaeographical analysis of the Liber feodorum which shows the involvement of fourteen scribes. Some of them appear to have also been active not only for the counts of Luxembourg, but also for other Luxembourgish jurisdictions (the Justicier des Nobles, the city authorities) during the first half of the fourteenth century. [more ▼] From its foundation in the decade 1230, onward, the Dominican priory of Marienthal has played an important role in the life of the county, later duchy of Luxembourg, as documented by its rich monastic archive. This paper aims at pursuing the critical editorial work carried out at the end of 19th century by Nicolas Van Werveke by publishing 12 unedited charters dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, which are today preserved in the archive group Marienthal, prieuré des Dominicaines. 1268-1793, at the State archive in Arlon. This critical edition is introduced by a short analysis of the dispersion of the monastic archives since the end of the monastic institution in 1783, and of the creation of this archive group in Arlon during the 19th and 20th centuries. [more ▼] From its foundation in 1135 onward, the Cistercian abbey of S. Maria di Chiaravalle Milanese has played a leading role in Mi- lan’s political, social, economical and religious life. Despite the ideal of the desertum prescribed by the Order’s Rule, the monks of Chiaravalle Milanese were closely linked to the urban élites and to the public insti- tutions for the entire Middle Ages. Nonetheless, as a Cistercian monas- tery, Chiaravalle Milanese had other privileged interlocutors: the most important one was the Papacy, as proven by the large number of letters (up to 120 until the beginning of the 15th century) addressed by popes to Chiaravalle Milanese and still preserved into the monastic archives. This paper aims at pursuing the critical editorial work recently carried out on Chiaravalle Milanese’s papal and Apostolic legates’ charters from 1139 to 1311, by publishing 16 unedited papal letters dating from the ponti cate of John XXII to that of Boniface IX. In addition, 3 more charters are edited in an Appendix, which are useful to contextualize and explain the relationship between Chiaravalle Milanese and the Holy See during the 14th century.
