The Luxatlas represents a collection of maps and structures (e.g., building, fortress, streets) combined with explanatory texts, chronological tables and images. On this basis, the historical town atlas documents historical processes of change diachronically for research purposes and education (university and school), for people interested in history (public history) and for municipal departments (supporting preparations for urban development projects). But the pure visualisation of research results is not the main focus of the project. The town atlas itself serves as an important tool for the acquisition of new knowledge. It is only by means of cartographic representations that comparisons can be made of various historical development processes in Luxembourg. The superimposition of different cartographic time layers enables users to visualise and analyse specific questions individually. The town atlas, therefore, offers a basis for further research on urban development. It is only through the cartographic presentation of historical, architectural, economic and urban development information that the distribution of certain spatial phenomena becomes visible and can then be interpreted and analysed. In this way, the interactive map becomes a central instrument for acquiring additional knowledge. [less ▲]

The historical atlas of the city of Luxembourg has been accessible on the internet since 2019. Since then, it has been continuously expanded, revised and improved, both technically and in terms of content. Users currently have the opportunity to view a large number of historical old maps and aerial photographs from Luxembourg archives for the period between 1560 and 2017 at zoom levels of their choice and to compare them with each other on transparent layers, precisely fitting one above the other. In addition, historical photos and views as well as explanatory texts on the city's history and on selected buildings or other infrastructure elements can be displayed. In order to realise the advantages of a web publication in the best possible way, the Luxatlas is based on open source software. This enables the development of customised WebGIS applications for the specific requirements of the project. In addition to the project presentation, the presentation will also highlight the methodological and source-critical challenges and put them up for discussion. The 18th century was an age of great innovation in cartography. For the first time, surveys of large areas were undertaken with enormous personnel and technical effort in order to be able to produce accurate and true-to-scale maps. The Habsburg Monarchy followed the example of the "Carte de Cassini", the first topographic map of France, and also commissioned a cartographic survey for the Netherlandish provinces. Empress Maria Theresa commissioned the director of the mathematics school of the artillery corps of the Austrian Netherlands, Major General Count Johann-Joseph von Ferraris, with this task. Between 1771 and 1777, a map series consisting of 275 hand-coloured single sheets at a scale of 1:11520 was produced under his direction. The "Carte de cabinet des Pays-Bas autrichiens" impresses both by the outstanding quality of the representation and by its great wealth of detail. It is one of the most important sources of 18th century Luxembourg history. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Leprosy is a disease that has accompanied mankind since the times of the Old Testament and is still widespread in parts of the world today. Its history is marked by contrasts: on the one hand, misery, infirmity and exclusion that could even lead to pogroms, on the other hand, religious exaltation, privilege and exceptional care. This ambivalence is typical for the treatment of lepers in the Middle Ages and in the early modern period. And it is also reflected in the prejudices and stereotypes with which those suffering from leprosy were confronted. The study examines the attributions and prejudices, both positive and negative, with which leprosy patients were confronted. and prejudices, both positive and negative, with which the group of leprosy patients was confronted and what effects these had on their living conditions. The analysis of selected written and pictorial sources from the Middle Ages and the early modern period shows that prejudices and attributions, both positive and negative, were of decisive importance for the lives of medieval and early modern lepers. This applies both to the definition of the social group from the outside and to the self-descriptions of the lepers, which referred to positively connoted religious ideas. Above all, the ambivalence of attributions and prejudices is characteristic. Prejudices against the lepers remained strikingly changeable depending on the context in the longue durée from the Middle Ages to the early modern period. This became most clearly visible in the crisis period of the 1320s, when even the positive attributions of salvation could not protect lepers from pogroms. [less ▲]
