This paper presents a stage based framework for analyzing transdisciplinary design processes in engineering product design and manufacturing. The framework provides a stage-wise, product lifecycle centric frame of reference for comparing design processes in industries from different industrial sectors involving multi-disciplinary stakeholders. The framework is based on extensive literature analysis in the domain of design theory and methodology, as well as from models in product life cycle management. The paper also reports insights on application of the framework for design processes analysis of 23 industries based on the mapping of their individual design processes to the developed framework. Integrated product design and development in today’s highly competitive, demanding and economically challenging world is a complex process depending upon input of many individuals, groups, organizations and even communities, which collaborate to realize the product. Due to the multi-technology nature of modern products, the design process requires multi-disciplinary resources. Engineering design literature provides an extensive knowledge base of product design processes, most of which are specific in an explicit or an implicit way to a specific discipline. This is because some time ago, the products were perceived to be rather mono-disciplinary. Recently, design processes have been described for integrated products from inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary team perspective (e.g.[1]), however, they too take product specific and discipline specific point of view. This paper takes a transdisciplinary perspective towards product design and presents results from an empirical study carried out to analyze the design process of different integrated products belonging to different disciplines/industrial segments; all of which involve multi-disciplinary or transdisciplinary involvement. A framework based on key findings from the transdisciplinary consolidation of academic design process models presented by Gericke and Blessing and Eisenbart et al. is developed and used to provide answers to the following research questions: • How well does the literature based trans-disciplinary design process apply to the trans-disciplinary industrial context? • Are there similarities between design processes across organizations regarding presence of process stages and design states? • Are there any elements that deviate from the literature-based framework? Contemporary product development has transformed from being mono-disciplinary to increasingly trans-disciplinary. Technology convergence and specialization of the knowledge are two distinctive trends that have become pronounced. These two trends are implicitly visible on a cross-disciplinary interaction level in industry. However, trans-disciplinary design has not been considered sufficiently in earlier work on design methodology. This paper presents results from an empirical study to identify shared elements of current design practice in industry and identification of transdisciplinary elements of product development. A framework based on key findings from the transdisciplinary consolidation of academic design process models presented by Gericke and Blessing (2012) and Eisenbart et al. (2011) is developed and used to provide answers to the following research questions: How well does the literature based trans-disciplinary design process apply to the trans-disciplinary industrial context? Are there commonalities between design processes across organisations regarding presence of process stages, design states, and the form of the process model? [less ▲]

Contemporary product development has transformed from being mono-disciplinary to increasingly trans-disciplinary. Design problems often do not match the boundaries of a single discipline. The integrated use of tools, techniques, and methods, which are intended to support designers in their work, is a subject of design methodology. This paper presents a critique of the current state of design methodologies from a transdisciplinary perspective, and their in-dustrial uptake. A case for an open community based approach for design methodology is made that considers contexts and mind-sets and provides a plat-form for consolidating design methodology in a dynamic perspective. The paper particularly addresses the following research questions: What needs should be addressed in the further development of design methodology? Uncertainty in product characteristics is ubiquitous in any engineering system at all the stages of product life-cycle. Considering uncertainty from different sources during the product design phase is critical to its reliable performance. This paper presents a framework integrating the uncertainty propagation through different product characteristics and its effect on product properties. The framework consists of three main parts: a descriptive model based on formal logic and characteristics properties model; a mathematical implementation through set theory and probabilistic approach; and an algorithm for design space evaluation and tolerancing. The application of framework is demonstrated through an industrial case study. [less ▲]

The paper proposes a modular functional modeling framework, which aims at integrating the different functional modeling perspectives, relevant to different disciplines. The results of two extensive literature studies on diverse functional modeling approaches proposed in a variety of disciplines are consolidated. These studies identified specific needs for an integrated functional modeling approach to support interdisciplinary conceptual design. The presented framework aims at fulfilling these needs. It consists of a variety of associated views, represented through different matrices. This matrix-based representation facilitates the analysis of different functional modeling perspectives and their interdependencies. Finally, the implications of the presented approach are discussed. This paper presents a framework consisting of a mathematical model and an algorithm for representation, analysis and exploration of the design space in redesign problems. The framework develops and extends the existing formalism of the Characteristics Properties Model (CPM) and Property Driven Design (PDD). A platform independent quantitative model based on formal log-ic is presented to map the characteristics and properties, as well as the relations and dependencies between them, along with the necessary conditions for solu-tion evaluation. The model is based on generalization of existing mathematical design models and is supported by the development of an algorithm enabling property driven design. The resulting framework offers a rich and flexible syn-tax and vocabulary along with a mathematical and computational tool applica-ble to mechanical product redesign. [less ▲]
