This paper studies the use of optical feeder links in very high throughput satellites (VHTS) networks with emphasis on gateway diversity techniques to mitigate the inherent propagation losses in optical frequencies. Focusing on a GEO scenario, the paper considers a system‐wide approach investigating various challenges of optical feeder links. These include transmission schemes amenable for transparent on‐board processing, optical channel models taking into account blockage by clouds and fading caused by atmospheric turbulence in addition to complexity of on‐board and on‐ground processing. The channel models are then used to dimension the ground segment towards ensuring a given availability percentage (e.g., 99.9%). The channel model and payload complexity further influence the choice of link layer techniques used for counteracting fading due to atmospheric turbulence in the absence of blockage. An elaborate end‐to‐end simulator incorporating the proposed channel models capturing the nuances of various processing blocks like optical‐electrical conversion is developed. The system performance results provide interesting insights and a framework for assessing the feasibility and advantages of optical feeder links in VHTS systems. [less ▲]

This paper deals with the problem of precoding, scheduling and link adaptation in next generation mobile interactive multibeam satellite systems. In contrast to the fixed satellite services, when the user terminals move across the coverage area, additional challenges appear. Due to the time varying channel, the gateway has only access to a delayed version of the channel state information (CSI) which can eventually limit the overall system performance. However, in contrast to general multiuser multipleinput- multiple-output terrestrial systems, the CSI degradation in multibeam mobile applications has a very limited impact for typical fading channel and system assumptions. Under realistic conditions, the numerical results show that precoding can offer an attractive gain in the system throughput compared to conservative frequency reuse allocations. [less ▲]

SatNEx IV project aims at studying medium and long term directions of satellite telecommunication systems for any of the commercial or institutional applications that can be considered appealing by key players although still not mature enough for attracting industry or initiating dedicated ESA R&D activities. This paper summarizes the first year activities identified as very promising techniques for next generation satellite communication systems. Concretely, very high throughput satellite trunking, physical layer advances for fullduplex and multipolarization systems, network coding applications and multiple access schemes for information centric networking are briefly presented. For all the activities, we identify the scenarios under study so as the preliminary technical solutions to be further investigated. [less ▲]

A main challenge towards realizing the next generation Terabit/s broadband satellite communications (SatCom) is the limited spectrum available in the Ka band. An attractive solution is to move the feeder link to the higher Q/V band, where more spectrum is available. When utilizing the Q/V band, due to heavy rain attenuation, gateway diversity is considered a necessity to ensure the required feeder link availability. Although receive site diversity has been studied in the past for SatCom, there is much less maturity in terms of transmit diversity techniques. In this paper, a modified switch and stay combining scheme is proposed for a Q/V band feeder link, but its performance is also evaluated over an end-to-end satellite link. The proposed scheme is pragmatic and has close to optimal performance with notably lower complexity. [less ▲]
