The concept of circular economy (CE) aims to close and slow resource loops without neglecting the goals of sustainable development. Recently, the concept received encouraging attention among researchers and business experts to be a convenient solution to move away from the finite linear economy concept to a more sustainable solution. However, this change of paradigm is only possible if we consider systems in a holistic manner and can localize the preventing hurdles. Value stream mapping (VSM) is a commonly known lean method, used to develop current state visualization of product and information flows within organization, helping to seek weaknesses and improve process flows. The motivation of this paper is a new C-VSM model, which enables its users to evaluate and visualize connected process-chains regarding CE on different levels in a holistic manner. For this purpose, the traditional VSM model was adapted towards the needs and requirements of CE through the application of a new representation method, additional indicators, and an appropriated evaluation system. C-VSM is in line with the current political and industrial objectives to apply CE principles by enabling a holistic reflection and consideration of supply-chains (SCs) on different levels. The model itself is validated through an extensive cross-company case study. [less ▲]

: The concept of the circular economy (CE) is receiving encouraging attention among scholars and practitioners, as a convenient solution to move away from the linear economy concept without neglecting the goals of sustainable development. The main goals of the CE are the closing of resource loops and the keeping of resources in the system for as long as possible at the highest utility level. However, as a result of the lack of internationally accepted definitions of the CE and several unsolved barriers, an excessive and inconsistent number of different CE applications exist. Most fields are mainly focusing on making a linear system circular instead of applying the CE principles in a holistic way. This paper presents a strategy to close the mentioned inconsistency gap, by contrasting currently discussed CE barriers and goals and thereof deriving two areas with a need for action (1. identifying the needed collection, sorting, and recovery infrastructure, and 2. developing circular product design guidelines). The strategy itself consists of connecting these two areas through an improved information exchange between the end-of-life (EOL) and beginning-of-life (BOL) of products. The result is CE design guidelines which are in accordance with the available or needed collection, sorting, and recovery infrastructure. The proposed strategy presents an innovative solution to apply CE principles in a holistic manner, based on EOL-driven product design. [less ▲]

Nowadays, students struggle with understanding complex production processes and kinematics of machine tools and robots. While professors mostly have been dealing with these subjects for many years, students have only short time to be introduced to the complex nature of these topics. Mixed Reality allows students to engage hands-on in their subjects to reach new dimensions of understanding. Making challenging topics for students accessible by creating a more visual and tactile experience. The applications for entertainment and gaming are off the charts, but the implications for augmented reality in education and science are also undoubtedly massive. The project focusses on making education as interactive as possible, which helps both, teachers and students receive a unique tool for communicating phenomena and processes that are difficult to describe verbally. As a result, a complex knowledge becomes simple, an involvement of students grows, the quality of education increases [less ▲]

Digitalization and automation of the production according to Industry 4.0 opens new opportunities for companies to develop more efficient value chains. In the context of mass customization, it is promising to examine more closely the complete internal value chain of companies, from the first customer contact to the delivery of the finished product, prior to provide digital configurations for customized products. A critical aspect for internal inefficiencies and complication of an aspired automation are the interfaces of departments due to inconsistent and non-uniform information transfer. This article presents a versatile approach to visualize the internal information flow at inter-departmental level as well as at intra-departmental level. The described multilevel information value stream mapping method perfectly suits as prerequisite for a digitalization or automation of internal information flows. As framework for the time capturing and visualization, ISO 22468 is used, and an industrial use case exemplifies the research findings. [less ▲]

Augmented Reality (AR) is a novel technology that projects virtual information on the real world environment. With the increased use of Industry 4.0 technologies in manufacturing, AR has gained momentum across various stages of product life cycle. AR can benefit production operators in many manufacturing tasks such as quality inspection, work instructions for manual assembly, maintenance, and in training. This research presents not only a typical architecture of an AR system but also both its software and hardware functions. The architecture is then applied to display virtual assembly instructions in the form of 3D animations on to the real world environment. The chosen assembly task in this research is to assemble a planetary gearbox system. The main objectives of this chapter are to elucidate the necessity of a standardized Value Stream Management (VSM) and to clarify how this standard can effectively increase corporate performance within cross-enterprise supply chain networks (SCNs). VSM is an effective tool to collect, evaluate and continuously improve product and information flows within companies in a common and standardized manner. The findings of this chapter are not only valid for consistent product and information flows, but are representative for the relevance of standards in general. In a globalized economy, standards need to be generally accepted and valid for all countries. Thus, corporate or national standards, only have limited impact. The International Standardization Organization (ISO) provides the means to develop, negotiate and communicate standards, which are globally binding. This chapter shares the experience of ISO 22468 standard development within ISO/TC 154 WG7 and proves its applicability by an administrative use case. [less ▲]

Quantifying lean and ICT architecture related to Industry 4.0 is a new challenge in Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) that needs to be addressed by both research as well as enterprises themselves. Especially in the manufacturing sector, SMEs need to transform themselves into emerging trends such as industry 4.0 while practicing existing manufacturing philosophies such as Lean Production Systems (LPS) to be competitive in global markets. The major concern is that there are many assessment models available to measure the status of an enterprise related to either LPS or Industry 4.0. Often, these models are complex and don’t fulfill the requirements of manufacturing SMEs. On the other hand, most of the models only consider either lean or industry 4.0 elements. The outcomes of this research help to develop a hybrid model including both lean and industry 4.0 features suitable for manufacturing SMEs. The main objective of this research is to provide state of the art literature on existing assessment models and consequently map lean and industry 4.0 components to the specific characteristics of manufacturing SMEs. Due to globalized business operations, companies in different economic sectors are part of complex supply chain networks. Their value-added processes comprise product and information flows, e.g. with a focus on manufacturing, service or trade. Until the final product is delivered to the end customer, it needs to pass many different processes in cooperating organizations. As a result, there a lot of business-to-business (B2B) interactions with cross-enterprise transactions, often including cross-border communications and sometimes even cross-industry trades with technological and often cultural implications. Especially the interfaces of supply chain networks are prone to inefficiencies, misunderstandings and delays due to a lack of standardized B2B transactions, which leads to waste in form of rework, errors and mistakes. In addition, new customers are hard to find for the manufacturing or trading company, since potential customers are so far limited to a regional network. The advantages of extending the customer base still need to be explored by many organizations. This paper discusses the opportunities by streamlining the communication along supply chain networks in a general fashion and then describes the application in a B2B automotive retail business. A concept of a web-based trading platform, which provides a seamless service for all steps of a convenient and efficient used vehicle remarketing business, is developed. It includes all phases, like offering and price finding in a comprehensive online platform, which also covers further activities, such as logistic services, financial transactions, and a mandatory feedback loop. The suggested B2B vehicle-trading platform enables a quick turnover of each transaction, which is analyzed and optimized based on the application of cross-enterprise Value Stream Management. This data can be used to optimize the manufacturing industry in terms of complex network topology metrics commonly used in the analysis of social and communication networks. In this work, several such metrics are presented along with their appropriate interpretation in the field of manufacturing. Furthermore, the assumptions under which such metrics are defined are assessed in order to determine their suitability. In numerous sectors and industries worldwide, there is a trend towards an intercompany and often international division of value creation and related work tasks. To overcome the challenges of complex cross-enterprise supply chain networks, innovative approaches to visualize, assess and enhance value streams are sought. The StreaM method, which is described in this paper, enables a comprehensive analysis, design and planning of cross-company product and information flows on different levels of value stream detail. At the same time, the entire methodology is based on a common understanding of key symbols, parameters and calculation procedures. In addition, the use of the developed StreaM method and the associated model in a case study proves its practical applicability in an industrial setting. In further validation projects, the transfer of the “Standardized cross-enterprise Value Stream Management Method” to other industry sectors is envisaged to continuously improve energy, trade or service processes. This article describes how on the way towards a reliable and efficient collaboration in global supply chain networks, organizations are seeking for suitable methods and tools to enhance product and information flows. Based on the evolving Lean Manufacturing methodology in combination with the increased exploitation of ICT, new and diverse Value Stream Management (VSM) approaches are currently used. Thus, a common VSM standard is sought to analyze and visualize valuable data and to synchronize capacities and flows. In this article, the authors present a review of existing VSM approaches, patents and software solutions. Furthermore, a classification comprising four categories that serve as a basis for the ongoing VSM standard development within ISO/TC 154 and a case study of an administrative value stream are shown.
