[more ▼] A person’s reference group can be considered either as a source of normative orientation or as a group of social comparison in making a judgment, irrespective of one’s group membership. The concept has mainly been applied in two theoretical traditions of research: While symbolic interactionists and social psychologists outlined the normative importance of reference groups for the development of the self, structural functionalist sociologists analyzed how material deprivation is estimated relative and with reference to other groups of comparison in the social structure. The concept has also played an important role in developing the discipline’s methodology of social research. [more ▼] A gatekeeper is an individual or collective actor who is in a position to control access to resources and rewards relevant in a particular social system. The term’s usage in the sociology of science goes back to Robert K. Merton, who defines gatekeeping as one of the four complementary roles in the role set of scientists and scholars. Gate-keeping activities are relevant in different arenas of scholarship such as between scientific masters and apprentices, in collective mentoring programs, in publishing and in research funding. [more ▼] The inquiry pursued the question whether the process of European integration in research funding has led to new forms of oligarchization and elite formation in the European Research Area. Empirically, we provided a case study on the European Research Council (ERC), which for the first time represents a case of institution-building in research funding at supranational level. The fact that the ERC intervenes into public science systems so far mostly organised at national level, thus simultaneously transforming traditional structures in the social organization of research, has motivated our hypothesis of an oligarchization process reproducing a new scientific elite in Europe. In scrutinising that presupposition we sought to identify those social mechanisms that generate, reproduce and possibly modify existing dynamics of stratification and oligarchization as an outcome of European integration in the area of science. [more ▼] The article examines research funding organisations and their public role in providing for and deciding upon the distribution of financial and symbolic resources for research. Taking the supranational European Research Council as a case study, and following notions drawn from Robert Merton's explanatory theory of social structure, we apply a structural analysis of research funding in Europe, making a distinction between structural conditions and social choices, mechanisms and consequences of establishing scientific research of "excellence" in the European Research Area. [more ▼] Is there a causal relationship between the accessions of the neighbor countries Slovenia and Austria to the European Union on the formation and development of sociology as an European scientific discipline? This study in a comparative perspective provides extensive empirical evidence for the institutional dynamics of Europeanization in regard to the social sciences. Results have shown that within an European context, sociology is working under new restrictions but also encounters enabling opportunities. Transnational co-operation of scholars contributes to a stock of knowledge more and more known as European sociology.
