Silicone elastomers are amongst others employed in glass façades as structural connection materials. They are known to be durable adhesives, able to transfer forces under variable loading and atmospheric conditions during their design life. For the dimensioning of adhesive joints, numerical simulations are often used, especially for joints which exhibit large deformations and/or for complex geometries. However, silicones have strong non-linear material behaviour already at small strain deformations, are slightly compressible and show a time-depending behaviour. The current existing material laws do not allow for considering these effects properly in simulation, particularly for combined loading. Therefore a hyperelastic material law for silicones has been developed and validated, based on a strain energy function. For this purpose, test series have been carried out to determine all relevant material parameters needed to describe the strain energy potential, namely tension, compression, shear and multi-axial oedometric test series on non-aged and artificially aged specimens. Furthermore, the softening due to low cyclic loading (Mullins’ effect) has been considered and quantified by comparison to quasi-static loading for all test series. The developed hyperelastic model has been implemented into the finite element software Abaqus® for validation and the results of numerical simulations have been compared to experimental results and existing laws. The comparison showed that the proposed model better matched the real behaviour of silicone elastomers and led to an increase in exactness of the numerical simulations of adhesive joints. [less ▲]

The highest transparency of façades is to be obtained by the use of point-fitted glass units. To comply with the demand for energy efficiency the use of insulating glass units is required. However, insufficient knowledge is present for point fittings in insulating glass which is a drawback of this kind of construction. Therefore research has been carried out to extend an existing design-method, the SLG-method, to insulating glass. In this paper, first, experimental investigations in point-fitted single glass units and the results are presented. Secondly, a numerical model is introduced which has been calibrated to this test data. This model will subsequently be extended to other geometries and the stress peaks at the borehole as well as the size of the local area for the SLG-method will be determined. Therefore this paper presents the preparation process for the application of the SLG-method for insulation glass units. [less ▲]

The demand for economic and eco-efficient solutions in construction industry is particularly enforcing efficient design and construction methods. The design of composite construction according to the plastic hinge theory in combination with semi-rigid joints provides one contemporary promising answer to these demands. This combination enables to mobilize almost all cross section- and system reserves. However, the capability for redistribution of the bending moment from internal support to mid-span, to activate these system reserves, requires sufficient rotation capacity of the composite beam and, especially, the connections. This paper presents design guidance on plastic and robust design of composite beams with semi-rigid composite connections with special focus on the influence of the reinforcement (ratio, diameter and type). With the provision of an engineering logic, new opportunities to design elegant and slender structures are given to engineers in a simple way. [less ▲]

The pressure in the market of high-rise and multistory office buildings is stimulating innovative solutions for the design of structural systems fulfilling the demand for flexible, sustainable floor layouts. Steel-concrete composite constructions do comply with related challenges. They offer a wide range of structural solutions to design economic, efficient and sustainable buildings. New composite slabs with sheets of up to 220 mm height are able to span up to 9 m without any intermediate support. These sheets can further be placed on the lower flange of the steel beam to reduce the slab thickness in order to build a "Slim-Floor System". By activating composite action for slim-floor beams due to recent innovations grid spans of about 10 x 14 m are enabled, permitting a huge flexibility in the architectural floor layout. Further the design of composite connection provides significant potential for structural optimization. This potential is outlined and design guidance for simplified and sustainable composite design is given. [less ▲]

The highest transparency in glass façades is obtained with point fitted glass units. Point fitted insulating glass units minimize thermal bridging and lead to glass façades with better energy efficiency. Though, insufficient knowledge is present to offer a design method for point fittings in insulating glass. Therefore research has been carried out to extend the existing SLG-design-method of Beyer for point fitted single and laminated glass to insulation glass units. This paper presents first results of this research campaign. Load bearing tests on point fittings in single glazing have been conducted. An FEA-model of the point fitting is calibrated by the test data according to the method of Kasper. By means of this verified FEA-model, the influence on the stress peak at the borehole of the edge distance of the point fitting as well as the edge bond is investigated. In addition, the size of the so called “local area” is adjusted for insulation glass units. [less ▲]

Recently developed adhesive materials enable the transfer of high loads between glass and other materials for structural use. However, for a numerical simulation, the description of the non-linear behaviour of the adhesives must still be improved. Therefore extensive experimental investigations have been carried out on a structural elastomer and a material constitutive model has been derived based on the experimental results. Via numerical studies, the new constitutive model has been validated and assessed by comparison to test data and existing models. [less ▲]

In the construction of façades, connections between glass and glass as well as other materials with varying properties, e.g. metals, are currently designed with, inter alia, the application of adhesives. The related analytical evaluation of the load bearing characteristics of these kinds of assemblies requires the correct determination of the adhesives’ properties; knowledge in this field is still incomplete. Therefore an extensive test campaign on the load bearing and displacement behaviour of common structural silicone and UV-acrylic was carried out with the aim, to identify appropriate models to describe their properties under quasi-static loading and for their implementation in numerical analyses. The test program, comparisons between the different adhesive materials and a summarised outcome will be presented in this paper. [less ▲]

The façade significantly influences the energy efficiency of the building. However, in addition to high insulating properties, modern architecture demands a high transparency for natural illumination and the compliance with inner comfort criteria in the building. The increasing use of glass can be seen as the architectural intention to combine those well-being and energetic principles. The highest transparency can be achieved with point-fitted glass units. Though, insufficient knowledge is present to use point fittings for insulation glass units, which are required to comply with the demand for energy-efficiency. Therefore, research has been carried out to investigate in the load bearing mechanism of different point-fitted insulating glass units in order to find an innovative point fitting connection system for insulating glass units to the steel substructures. This paper presents results of this research campaign and provides information on how to design point-fitted insulating glass units. [less ▲]
