[more ▼]We report the results of an unpolarized small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) study on Mn-Bi-based rare-earth-free permanent magnets. The magnetic SANS cross section is dominated by long-wavelength transversal magnetization fluctuations and has been analyzed in terms of the Guinier-Porod model and the distance distribution function. This provides the radius of gyration which, in the remanent state, ranges between about $220-240 \, \mathrm{nm}$ for the three different alloy compositions investigated. Moreover, computation of the distance distribution function in conjunction with results for the so-called $s$-parameter obtained from the Guinier-Porod model indicate that the magnetic scattering of a Mn$_{45}$Bi$_{55}$ sample has its origin in slightly shape-anisotropic structures. [more ▼]The response of a colloidal dispersion of Ni nanorods to an oscillating magnetic field was characterized by optical transmission measurements as well as small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments using the TISANE (Time-dependent SANS experiments) technique. Exposed to a static magnetic field, the scattering intensity of the rod ensemble could be well described by the cylinder form factor using the geometrical particle parameters (length, diameter, orientation distribution) determined by transmission electronmicroscopy and magnetometry. An oscillation of the field vector resulted in a reorientation of the nanorods and a time-dependency of the scattering intensity due to the shape anisotropy of the rods. Analysis of the SANS data revealed that in the range of low frequencies the orientation distribution of the rods is comparable to the static case. With increasing frequency, the rod oscillation was gradually damped due to an increase of the viscous drag. It could be shown that despite of the increased friction in the high frequency range no observable change of the orientation distribution of the ensemble with respect to its symmetry axis occurs. [more ▼]In the present study, the rotation of magnetic nanorods in a soft hydrogel matrix induced by a homogeneous magnetic field is investigated. Magnetic nanorods of ≈151.2 nm length and ≈17.7 nm diameter are synthesized via current-pulsed electrodeposition of nickel into porous aluminum oxide-templates. The nanorods are processed towards a stable colloidal dispersion by dissolution of the alumina template in aqueous NaOH to which PVP (polyvinyl-pyrrolidone) is added as surfactant. These suspensions are used to prepare gelatine-based ferrogels of different shear modulus with either isotropic or uniaxial orientation-distribution of the nanorods. While magnetization measurements of rigid ferrogels mainly reflect the magnetic properties of the nickel nanorods, the magnetization behavior of soft ferrogels is significantly influenced by a field-induced rotation of the nickel nanorods in the low compliant matrix. A particular analysis of magnetization measurements on uniaxial ferrogels enables to quantify the rotation angle of the nanorods with respect to their initial orientation under the influence of a transversal homogeneous magnetic field. The analysis of the field-dependent rotation also allows to estimate the local shear modulus of the matrix which is demonstrated by an investigation of room temperature ageing process of the ferrogel. [more ▼]Colloidal dispersions of Ni nanorods were synthesized by pulsed electrodeposition of Ni into nanoporous aluminum oxide layers followed by dissolution of the templates. Geometrical characterization of the nanorods by transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy allowed us to determine the average length (100–250 nm) and diameter (20–40 nm) of the rods and to estimate the thickness of the polyvinylpyrrolidone surfactant layer. Due to their acicular shape, nanorods of the given size are uniaxial ferromagnetic single domain particles and exhibit a distinct anisotropic polarizability. These two characteristic properties are the physical basis for magnetic field-dependent optical transmission and allow us to investigate the rotational diffusion of the nanorods in liquid dispersion. In the present study, we employed AC magnetization measurements, dynamical light scattering and optical transmission measurements in a rotating magnetic field to determine the rotational diffusion coefficient. The results from all three methods were consistent and agree with theory within a factor of 2. [more ▼]Aqueous dispersions of nickel nanorods, ~13 nm in diameter and 40–160 nm in length, were synthesized using ac electrodeposition into porous alumina templates. The nanorods in suspension can be aligned by modest magnetic fields, which leads to a change in the optical transmittance of the dispersion. Optical transmission measurements with polarized and unpolarized light as a function of magnetic field were performed on suspensions of different particle concentration and varying aspect ratio of the nanoparticles. The experimental results were compared with a theoretical model in which the optical absorption of the nanorods is calculated from the polarizability of prolate ellipsoids in the quasistatic approximation. The magnetic field dependence is introduced in terms of the static orientational distribution function of magnetic moments in an external field. In addition, the relaxation dynamics of the optical transmission was studied, which allowed us to determine the rotational diffusion coefficient of the nanorods in suspension.
