[more ▼] The Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24th 2022 has triggered a worldwide wave of support and expressions of solidarity, also among C²DH staff. This report gives an overview of their past activities together with a preliminary review and recommendations for the year 2023. This does not cover private support activities undertaken by C²DH members. This report consists of three parts: First, a brief summary of the response of Luxembourgish research institutions, published already in June 2022. Second, a chronology of activities by C²DH staff since March 2022. Third, an overview of past and planned activities by C²DH. These activities we group in a) Collaboration and Training in support of Ukrainian researchers and b) Documentation and Preservation with a focus on cultural heritage and future research activities. At the time of writing, most do not expect the war to end any time soon. This makes it necessary to revisit past support activities regarding their success and effectiveness, to adjust measures according to the changed situation and to identify new opportunities for support also in light of their impact on the centre and its ongoing activities in research and teaching. Overall, the centre will continue and expand its support activities in light of the orientation towards the development of the future Ukrainian research landscape. [more ▼] Establishing and implementing rules that would teach pupils to become citizens became a crucial technique for turning those spots on the map of Europe whose sovereignty had shifted after the First World War into lived social spaces. This article uses Arnold Van Gennep’s notion that a shift in social status possesses a spatiality and temporality of its own, in order to analyse how principals of secondary schools negotiated transformation in the Belgian–German borderlands. It asks whether and how they were called on to offer training that would make the borderlands more cohesive with the rest of Belgium in terms of the social origins of pupils and the content of study, and examines the extent to which they were historical actors with room for their own decision-making on creating and abolishing a liminal phase, thereby leading secondary education through its rites of passage. [more ▼] This article investigates the capacities of children to participate actively in their lives in the Belgian-German borderlands in the time period between World War I and World War II. The article interprets a body of historical sources that has hitherto been left unexplored – namely, borderland child ego documents – with the help of insights from child studies and border studies. These ego documents unfold as borderland child heterotopias. Borderland child heterotopias include material places and creative linguistic loci established by or for those considered in crisis in relation to the rest of society based on their age within or outside child spaces of modernity.
