Satellite communication (SatCom) is facing a spectrum scarcity problem due to the limited available exclusive spectrum and the high demand of the broadband satellite services. In this context, there has been an increasing interest in the satellite community to exploit the non-exclusive Ka-band spectrum in order to enhance the spectral efficiency of future broadband satellite systems. Herein, we propose a novel concept of enabling the spectral coexistence of satellite and terrestrial networks using three dimensional (3D) beamforming, which exploits the elevation dimension in addition to the commonly used azimuth dimension. The proposed beamforming solution is employed in a Multiple-Input Low Noise Block Downconverter (MLNB) based Feed Array Reflector (FAR) in contrast to the widely used Uniform Linear Array (ULA) structure. Within the employed antenna structure, the performance of the proposed beamforming solution is evaluated considering different feed arrangements. Finally, a database-assisted approach and two blind approaches are suggested for the effective implementation of the proposed solutions. [less ▲]

The present work focuses on the forward link of a broadband multibeam satellite system that aggressively reuses the user link frequency resources. Two fundamental practical challenges, namely the need to frame multiple users per transmission and the per-antenna transmit power limitations, are addressed. To this end, the so-called frame-based precoding problem is optimally solved using the principles of physical layer multicasting to multiple co-channel groups under per-antenna constraints. In this context, a novel optimization problem that aims at maximizing the system sum rate under individual power constraints is proposed. Added to that, the formulation is further extended to include availability constraints. As a result, the high gains of the sum rate optimal design are traded off to satisfy the stringent availability requirements of satellite systems. Moreover, the throughput maximization with a granular spectral efficiency versus SINR function, is formulated and solved. Finally, a multicast-aware user scheduling policy, based on the channel state information, is developed. Thus, substantial multiuser diversity gains are gleaned. Numerical results over a realistic simulation environment exhibit as much as 30% gains over conventional systems, even for 7 users per frame, without modifying the framing structure of legacy communication standards. The lack of available unlicensed spectrum together with the increasing spectrum demand by multimedia applications has resulted in a spectrum scarcity problem, which affects Satellite Communications (SatCom) as well as terrestrial systems. The goal of this paper is to propose Resource Allocation (RA) techniques, i.e. carrier, power and bandwidth allocation, for a cognitive spectrum utilization scenario where the satellite system aims at exploiting the spectrum allocated to terrestrial networks as the incumbent users without imposing harmful interference to them. In particular, we focus on the microwave frequency bands 17.7-19.7 GHz for the cognitive satellite downlink and 27.5-29.5 GHz for the cognitive satellite uplink, although the proposed techniques can be easily extended to other bands. In the first case, assuming that the satellite terminals are equipped with multiple Low Block Noise Converters (LNB), we propose a joint beamforming and carrier allocation scheme to enable cognitive Space-to-Earth communications in the shared spectrum where Fixed Service (FS) microwave links have priority of operation. In the second case, however, the cognitive satellite uplink should not cause harmful interference to the incumbent FS system. For the latter, we propose a Joint Power and Carrier Allocation (JPCA) strategy followed by a bandwidth allocation scheme which guarantees protection of the terrestrial FS system while maximizing the satellite total throughput. The proposed cognitive satellite exploitation techniques are validated with numerical simulations considering realistic system parameters. It is shown that the proposed cognitive exploitation framework represents a promising approach for enhancing the throughput of conventional satellite systems. [less ▲]

Cognitive Radio (CR) has been considered as a potential candidate for addressing the spectrum scarcity problem of future wireless networks. Since its conception, several researchers, academic institutions, industries, regulatory and standardization bodies have put their significant efforts towards the realization of CR technology. However, as this technology adapts its transmission based on the surrounding radio environment, several practical issues may need to be considered. In practice, several imperfections such as noise uncertainty, channel/interference uncertainty, transceiver hardware imperfections, signal uncertainty, synchronization issues, etc. may severely deteriorate the performance of a CR system. To this end, the investigation of realistic solutions towards combating various practical imperfections is very important for successful implementation of the cognitive technology. In this direction, first, this survey paper provides an overview of the enabling techniques for CR communications. Subsequently, it discusses the main imperfections that may occur in the most widely used CR paradigms and then reviews the existing approaches towards addressing these imperfections. This paper investigates the idea of exploiting interference among the simultaneous multiuser transmissions in the downlink of multiple antennas systems. Using symbol level precoding, a new approach towards addressing the multiuser interference is discussed through jointly utilizing the channel state information (CSI) and data information (DI). In this direction, the interference among the data streams is transformed under certain conditions to useful signal that can improve the signal to interference noise ratio (SINR) of the downlink transmissions. In this context, new constructive interference precoding techniques that tackle the transmit power minimization (min power) with individual SINR constraints at each user's receivers are proposed. Furthermore, we investigate the CI precoding design under the assumption that the received MPSK symbol can reside in a relaxed region in order to be correctly detected. Finally, extensive numerical results show that the proposed schemes outperform other state of the art techniques. [less ▲]

The optimal beamformer is designed for a MISO system with and without considering the minimum required secrecy rate. Further, the optimal power control in a SISO system is carried out using an efficient iterative method, and this is followed by analyzing the trade-off between the secrecy energy efficiency and the secrecy rate for both MISO and SISO systems. Precoding for the downlink of a multibeam satellite system has been recently shown, under ideal conditions, to be promising technique towards employing aggressive frequency reuse gainfully. However, time varying phase uncertainties imposed by the components and the channel, combined with delayed feedback perturbs the channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). In this paper, we consider a power constrained robust formulation of the downlink precoding problem to counter the phase uncertainties. In particular it considers imposing conditions on the average signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR), to deal with imperfect CSIT. In addition to the robust formulation, the primacy of user selection is highlighted and a new approach exploiting the satellite system design is proposed. Performance of the derived robust precoder in conjunction with the proposed location based user selection is then evaluated and the gains are tabulated. [less ▲]

Customer churn predictive modeling deals with predicting the probability of a customer defecting using historical, behavioral and socio-economical information. This tool is of great benefit to subscription based companies allowing them to maximize the results of retention campaigns. The problem of churn predictive modeling has been widely studied by the data mining and machine learning communities. It is usually tackled by using classification algorithms in order to learn the different patterns of both the churners and non-churners. Nevertheless, current state-of-the-art classification algorithms are not well aligned with commercial goals, in the sense that, the models miss to include the real financial costs and benefits during the training and evaluation phases. In the case of churn, evaluating a model based on a traditional measure such as accuracy or predictive power, does not yield to the best results when measured by the actual financial cost, ie. investment per subscriber on a loyalty campaign and the financial impact of failing to detect a real churner versus wrongly predicting a non-churner as a churner. In this paper, we present a new cost-sensitive framework for customer churn predictive modeling. First we propose a new financial based measure for evaluating the effectiveness of a churn campaign taking into account the available portfolio of offers, their individual financial cost and probability of offer acceptance depending on the customer profile. Then, using a real-world churn dataset we compare different cost-insensitive and cost-sensitive classification algorithms and measure their effectiveness based on their predictive power and also the cost optimization. The results show that using a cost-sensitive approach yields to an increase in cost savings of up to 26.4% [less ▲]

This paper proposes to enhance low resolution dynamic depth videos containing freely non–rigidly moving objects with a new dynamic multi–frame super–resolution algorithm. Existent methods are either limited to rigid objects, or restricted to global lateral motions discarding radial displacements. We address these shortcomings by accounting for non–rigid displacements in 3D. In addition to 2D optical flow, we estimate the depth displacement, and simultaneously correct the depth measurement by Kalman filtering. This concept is incorporated efficiently in a multi–frame super–resolution framework. It is formulated in a recursive manner that ensures an efficient deployment in real–time. Results show the overall improved performance of the proposed method as compared to alternative approaches, and specifically in handling relatively large 3D motions. Test examples range from a full moving human body to a highly dynamic facial video with varying expressions. [less ▲]

In this paper, we consider the problem of resource allocation in the context of cognitive Satellite Communications (SatCom). In particular, we focus on the cognitive downlink access by Geostationary (GEO) Fixed Satellite Service (FSS) terminals in the band 17.7-19.7 GHz, where the incumbent users are Fixed-Service (FS) microwave links. Assuming a multiple Low Noise Block Converter (LNB) satellite receiver at the cognitive FSS terminal-side, an efficient receive beamforming technique combined with carrier allocation is proposed in order to maximize the overall downlink throughput as well as to improve the beam availability. The proposed cognitive exploitation framework allows the flexibility of using non-exclusive spectrum for the FSS downlink system, thus improving the overall system throughput. On-board processing (OBP), a paradigm that allows for manipulation of the signal at the satellite transponder, is being embraced by a large section of the satellite community. Exploiting OBP can lead to efficient implementation, bandwidth saving, lower redundancy, and better performance. Enabling processing aboard a satellite necessitates re-assessing the implementation of a number of signal processing techniques which, so far, have been ground-centric. In this work, we investigate the possibility of implementing signal predistortion (SPD) aboard a satellite having digital transparent processor (DTP). Such satellites employ transponders that allow for the implementation of limited functionalities in the digital domain. On-board predistortion can then be performed on the digitized data and can provide better performance compared to on-ground techniques. However, the conversion to the digital domain performed by an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) introduces different types of noise. Among these, the clock jitter requires the implementation of estimation and compensation algorithms. In this paper we propose a reduced-complexity on-board signal predistortion algorithm capable of post-compensating the jitter introduced by the ADC, and pre-compensating the distortion generated by the amplifier. Herein, we study the spectral coexistence of Geostationary (GEO) Fixed Satellite Services (FSS) downlink and Broadcasting Satellite Services (BSS) feeder links in the Ka-band (17.3 − 18.1 GHz) which is primarily allocated for BSS feeder links. Firstly, a novel cognitive spectrum exploitation framework is proposed in order to utilize the available band efficiently. Subsequently, based on the interference analysis carried out between these systems, two cognitive approaches, namely Carrier Allocation (CA) and Beamforming (BF), are investigated under the considered framework assuming the availability of an accurate Radio Environment Map (REM). The employed techniques allow the flexibility of using additional shared carriers for the FSS downlink system along with the already available exclusive carriers (19.7 − 20.2 GHz), thus increasing the overall system throughput. It is shown that a significant improvement in the per beam throughput as well as in the beam availability can be achieved by applying CA and BF approaches in the considered scenario. [less ▲]

Exploring innovative cellular architectures to achieve enhanced system capacity and good coverage has become a critical issue towards realizing the fifth generation (5G) of wireless communications. In this context, this paper proposes a novel concept of an intelligent Amplify and Forward (AF) 5G repeater for enabling the densification of future cellular networks. The proposed repeater features a Spectrum Sensing (SS) intelligence capability and utilizes such intelligence in a complementary fashion in comparison to its existing counterpart (e.g., Cognitive Radio) by detecting the active channels within the assigned spectrum. This intelligence allows the proposed repeater to carry out selective amplification of the active channels in contrast to the full amplification in conventional AF repeaters. Furthermore, the performance of a Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) based two hop cellular network utilizing the proposed repeater is evaluated in terms of the system throughput. Simulation results demonstrate up to 13 % increase when compared with the conventional repeaters. Moreover, the effect of SS errors on the system capacity is analyzed. [less ▲]

The detection of active Primary Users (PUs) in practical wireless channels with a single Cognitive Radio (CR) sensor is challenging due to several issues such as the hidden node problem, path loss, shadowing, multipath fading, and receiver noise/interference uncertainty. In this context, Cooperative Spectrum Sensing (CSS) is considered a promising technique in order to enhance the overall sensing efficiency. Existing CSS methods mostly focus on homogeneous cooperating nodes considering identical node capabilities, equal number of antennas, equal sampling rate and identical Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR). However, in practice, nodes with different capabilities can be deployed at different stages and are very much likely to be heterogeneous in terms of the aforementioned features. In this context, we study a decision statistics-based centralized CSS which can reduce the signalling burden compared to the one of the sample-based CSS and at the same time achieve the desired level of sensing performance. More specifically, we propose a novel CSS technique based on the joint Probability Distribution Function (PDF) of the multiple decision statistics resulting from different processing capabilities at the sensor nodes and compare its performance with various existing cooperative schemes. Further, we provide a design guideline for the network operators to facilitate decision making while upgrading a sensor network. [less ▲]
